Jack Hanna's long goodbye: How Alzheimer's is stripping away the man the world once knew

  • Jack Hanna built the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium into one of the nation's best. He then captivated national audiences on David Letterman’s late-night talk show, "Good Morning America" and a number of his own Emmy-winning animal series that still run in syndication. He traveled the globe as a leading animal conservationist promoting Columbus. It was his home for decades.
But at age 76, Alzheimer’s disease has stripped away his memory and the life he led in the public eye for almost a half century. He was first diagnosed in the fall of 2019 with early Alzheimer's but now the disease has advanced to the point where he doesn't know most of his own family.

@@mas5867 I learned early in my Dad's dementia when I asked him a question or two about the past and I saw the anguish in his eyes that he could not remember. I realized that I just need to let him take control of the conversation because he was always trying to teach my brothers and me. I later realized that my father's memories ebbs and flows like the tidal changes. It is just best to enjoy the present time that we all have together.

My Dad died from this disease. The hardest part was, when visiting him, he would always tell me "I am going home with you today". On his last day, he was holding my hand, and turned slowly and grabbed my other hand, and said "I love you Rusty"... he had not forgotten me! Later that day he said this was no way to live, and I told him I would make sure he got home in the next couple of days. He died the following day.... He went home! God Bless you Suzi - You are giving him the comfort he deserves.

The only thing I can advise is to not scorn him when he can't remember something: "Nah it's not coming to you" because one of the last things they lose is the ability to know that they've lost. Just let whatever's left of him know that you understand and that he doesn't have to try so hard because you love him no matter what.

I went through it with my mom who passed away in 2020. You are right. Especially the first time she doesn't remember who you are. It's like a knife stabbing you in your heart. It was very hard to go through. I know for a fact she is in heaven and I will see her again one day with her new body and she will know me then. Prayers for you too @jamesbass9797.

He was the number one zoologist on tv growing up. I think he made me really start to like animals. It is sad to see this happen to him.

Jack and his family were such a delight to see on tv. He certainly opened the animal world to anyone that watched his shows

I struggle, like so many people, with a pretty heavy depression and sometimes to try to feel better I go back and watch the episodes of Letterman when Jack Hanna was on. Sometimes I laugh so hard that I almost can’t breathe. What a blessing. I hope that, in some kind of way, he will know and remember just how loved and appreciated he is and always will be.

When I was younger I LOOOOOOVED when Jack would go on the Lettermen show. He was so happy, zany, quirky, and funny. I hope that deep down inside he knows that he affected millions of children when it comes to how they view animals. His curiosity was infectious and I'd run to my Encyclopedias to find out more about the animals he had with him on the show.
    Bless you Jack!

I appreciate that Suzi Hannah allowed an article about Jack and Alzheimer's and also this video. I think it will mean a lot to people beginning the same long journey. His whole family is left with so many memories of all the adventures they had, and that is comforting. He will always be in my memories as I always watched his shows and especially loved seeing him on David Letterman. They played off each other and gave me so many belly laughs that I so needed. God bless you, Hanna family and especially Jack!

I didn't like Letterman, he always made these stupid jokes about the animals and gave them such a bad rep... screw him.

I loved him on Johnny Carson. Johnny played along so well, and when an animal acted up, it was so funny to watch Jack and Johnny. The best.

At 70, this man taught me as an adult to absolutely love and appreciate the beautiful wildlife on this planet. His use of humor while shoving important facts in my face brought so much joy to me personally. Sitting here crying my eyes out, but I know that the Love that Jack imparted to me for the planet will live on in me and millions of others. . . Love Never Fails . . . Thank you Mr. Jack!!!
