0:05 What the technician said: "It was for fuel efficiency, that's essentially a gasoline "container", the three tubes to the throttle body are inserted into the fuel can with the ends above the fuel level, the three tubes towards the front of the tank are inserted below the fuel level and while the engine is running, the vacuum created forces air down the tubes, into the fuel, causing a disturbance in the surface tension of the fuel and creating a higher level of vapor that gets sucked into the engine and becomes the source of fuel."
As mentioned the engine had a very bad bottom-end knock so the shop did not do any other work on it.
0:23 The customer somehow drove to the shop like this (most likely in 4WD). As mentioned the customer has no clue how the studs and nuts that hold the differential to the housing went missing. Maybe a customer DIY gone wrong or somebody did it on purpose?
0:37 The customer mentioned they had no clue they ever drove in wet concrete. There was so much concrete that the CV axle was rubbing against it, which caused the grease to leak out and wear the CV axle which needed to get replaced.
0:48 Their son-in-law broke a caliper slide pin bolt somehow, so he used the chain to hold the brake caliper in place. The shop fixed it.
0:59 A universal wheel spacer and some loose change that the customer had was taped to the brake rotor and used as a "spacer".
1:07 This Ford Focus had the passenger side strut tower damaged, and near the fender was welded very poorly. The technician mentioned the vehicle is not safe to be on the roads and didn't want their names on it.
1:23 The bag of fish food/pellets was hitting the window switch while braking.
1:36 The technician turned on the blind spot detector.
1:46 The customer's insurance company paid for the damages.
1:57 Not sure why somebody would do this and it's very unsafe! A new outer tie rod end can be very cheap. Maybe the customer was working on their car and broke the outer tie rod end somehow, so put a bolt through it. Hopefully, they get it replaced.
2:05 The front coil spring mounts perch were most likely worn/rusted out so the customer did this to keep the coil springs in place. As mentioned the shop refused to do any work as it was held in with ratchet straps and poorly done.
2:16 The shop put a bag on the air filter as it was raining outside.
2:24 Air filter assembly is half missing, and multiple connectors broke.
2:40 As mentioned the customer could not see any water lines/proof of the vehicle being in a flood because it was completely submerged and had a boat propeller hit the roof. The customer had also installed a new battery which didn't do anything.
2:57 "This truck could have had a dangerous and even deadly outcome if it wasn’t brought in for engine repairs and an extended “bumper to bumper” diagnostic.Looks like the previous lift installer forgot to reinstall or properly torque the front spring hangers and the entire front end was being held in place by 2 bolts."

Friend of mine caught someone about to hack the cat off his neighbors then brand new 2018 Silverado, he knew it wasn't his neighbor under the truck 'cause the thief, in my friends words "Had skinny white chicken legs", his neighbor is a wall sized black man.
Thief got dragged out of the truck by my friend and his neighbor, both of which are large guys, can't imagine what it was like to find a giant white and black guy looming over you with guns.

No water lines but had propeller marks from an outboard motor on the roof. The most extreme case of a flooded car ever!! Thumbs up to your channel.

I retired from wrenching in 2009. I don't miss it one bit. One time I had a customer come in with a 1980 Dodge Aspen wagon (last year they were made, he explained) that had an elaborate setup attached to the roof rack that was comprised of 3" PVC pipe, rope and home-made "hinges". The ropes went down through the vents in the hood near the windshield and then through the firewall and into the cabin where they were connected to a series of levers and pulleys dangling from under the dash. He was in for "Front Brake Pads _ONLY_ " !!! A lovely old senior citizen with an instant temper. I asked about the roof contraption and his answer was hilarious. It seems he had become too old to walk his beloved Dog as far as he use to be able to after he had a hip replacement. So, he would drive to a nearby cemetery, attach the end of a rope to his pets collar and lower it out the drivers window. The ropes went into the end of one of the PVC pipes on the roof that was actually a boom that could be swung out and around the entire car so his pooch could wonder about freely. He could keep the Dog away from certain things by manipulating the levers and pulling on the ropes from the comfort of the driver seat. He said he would drive slowly around the cemetery until his Doggo was content and ready to go home. I kinda felt sorry for him. He had a tear in his eye as he talked about his Dog, and I couldn't help but notice that the Dog wasn't with him. I didn't ask why but, I assumed his companion had passed and he simply wasn't interested in removing his invention.
There's a man who knows how to treat his dog.
Ya doing repair work on someone else’s car for years is soul crushing… I only modify for customers or repair cars for flipping all myself… feels like a completely different industry and so much better… I don’t even change my own oil anymore reminds me too much of those bad repair shop days, plus the shop down the street only charges $19.99 😂

That fuel saver gadget is amazing. It causes your engine to use no gas at all! So efficient!

I feel like everyone who gets scammed by miracle fuel-mileage boosters should have to take a mandatory class on chemistry and physics.
My dad is one of the people who believe in the 50 mpg carb that was covered up by the government and big oil. Hhhh, physics does not allow for a carburetor alone to make a gas vehicle to be that efficient without making something like a smart car. Most of the energy released from the combustion of gas is waste heat. He says with the rules of physics, we don't allow ourselves to think beyond and do what we think is impossible. Same thing he says about faster than light travel
It is impressive how much devices are sold recently that have to be plugged into the CAN connector. At least they doesn't damage the car.

Your first clue that's a scam should be that there is a entertaining backstory about a genius inventor who came up with this product. And there a conspiracy by someone to suppress this incredible invention. Big oil, big pharma, big pizza, or NASA who faked the moon landings. And if a person looks into it, he'll find that most of the people in these stories don't even exist. But all of these scam products follow a similar pattern.
If "you" want better fuel economy there is one simple solution ... drive better. The smoother "you" drive the better more MPG's you get no matter what you drive. Ensuring maintenance/weight/tire pressure/etc help a bit but "your" accelerator device is key.
The one with the concrete cracked me up. There's a concrete finisher somewhere who is in a rage.

You have to wonder why, straight after they knew they had driven through wet cement, (and they must have known) they didn't make any attempt to hose/jet wash it off.🤤
I recall witnessing a guy driving around some barriers, up a driveway and into a parking lot. Unfortunately the barriers were there because new asphalt was in the process of being put down. Made some really neat tire tracks. The job foreman was spitting mad (understatement) as he ripped the guy a new one.
I wonder if they had to have it towed out of the concrete project; somebody's gettng a bill for the re-pour I'll bet.
Over thirty years of concrete I’ve seen several cars knee deep in fresh concrete. And what’s funny is most of them had to drive around the barriers or even worse the concrete truck that was pouring the concrete.

I worked at a junkyard for several years and never seen those. Lots of barbed-wire scratches on the hood and over the roof though.

When I worked on trucks I used to hear, "I tried to fix it myself", and sometimes it was awful scary.
The bottom line is that the average Joe Schmoe seriously overestimates their mechanical acuity. At least with Jane Schmoe's they go "Okay, I have no clue about this, I'm not mechanically inclined, it is going to the repair shop no matter how much it is costing me! No, Billy Bob... I won't allow you to work on my vehicle! Yours is an accident waiting to happen due to your 'fixes'!"

I have done this once when I broke a sensor plug that required too much force to release that it shattered the plastic around the plug. I at least feel better for trying in the first place, knowing that I have reached the limit of my mechanical skills and should stop before I make it worse, and being honest with the mechanic that now has to deal with my mess. The worst feeling though came when it turned out that the sensor I was trying to pull was on the other side of the motor.
the worst I've seen in real life was a big truck that drove to the shop with a pair of vice grips holding the tie rod on. Or perhaps the plug in the sidewall of a trailer tire...flip a coin?
@@Hybris51129 They do that on purpose, using heat and UV unstable plastics and rubbers in waterproof connectors so that when the time comes to yank one off it'll shatter as often as not.
Doesn't matter a lick to the dealer because they'll have two thousand spares at fifteen cents each in the back, but buying a new one retail will hurt.
If it's something that needs to come off every once in a while and there's length to spare, cut it off and put a deutsch plug on. You can even get deutsch pins that use roll crimps instead of the specialty tool

A mechanic i went to years ago had a wall covered with various miracle gas savers. Magnets, tornado/cyclonic tubes, passive turbos, ionic realignment devices, etc. He loved collecting them.
Put them all on the same car, and it creates gas while driving.
Hay now I have a gas saving device that actually works I call it a "bicycle"
I'm so very happy that I'm a RETIRED mechanic. The things people do to their cars never ceases to amaze me. We just can't have nice things!!!!

Over 10 years ago, my next door neighbor (who was a backyard shade-tree mechanic in a small town) had a 1990s Minivan. That van was stolen one day, driven to a parking lot, and was set on fire. Someone probably got outrageously pissed at him for botching a repair or something - he _did_ have some weird advice a few times.

As if a person who would drive that truck wouldn't also drive without registration. Your inspections are a gigantic waste of time and money. 35 states don't have them. Accident rates are no worse. Literally no measurable difference. Explain that.

Down here in Australia we use metric as well. Been using kilometre measurements for 50 years. As well as metres, litres not liters as those pesky Americans spell it. Also metric bolt and nut sizes as well. We do still have imperial sockets and spanner sets etc for older vehicles that have imperial nuts and bolts. I don't know if some modern cars that are sold new here have imperial fastenings due to their country of origin. I'm assuming the ram utes use imperial fastenings for their construction and the chev silverado's probably use imperial as well.

Loved the Volkswagen air intake solutions. The new one was too big to fit under the hood so they just sawed of that part of the hood.

I don't see an issue with them if you break those stupid locking tabs off a connector or something, or for what they're intended for - holding wires together and so they don't rub on things, but people seem to think they're structural zip ties - you at least got to get the stainless steel ones if you want them to do anything structural /s

When I saw the first clip, It reminded me of those infomercials from years ago that touted devices that would improve a vehicle's performance and fuel economy. I never believed them and the only way to improve both was the long tried and true tune up.
Did you see the "Universal Tornado Turbo Single Fan Air Intake Fuel Saver Fan Turbonator" a few videos back that someone had bought and installed? Theres one born every minute.😆
Another fuel saver is tires properly inflated to the pressures on the driver's door sticker, not the tire sidewall.
@@uhtred7860 I never trusted those darn tornado thingies. I opted for the fuel saver that plugs into my 12v outlet! You know it actually works because it has a little red LED on it that lights up! /s

It reminds me of when Clarkson stole a piece of May's hood. I've done my fair share of hacks to beaters and that's about the worst way to accomplish that goal.
two times that a shop declined to work on a car in one video? This has to be a new record.
The legal nightmares of working on these vehicles and arguing with owners and insurers leads to that decision. As my guy says "there are some jobs that just aren't worth it" and he turns down some work because of that, even if the vehicle isn't a complete dumpster fire.
@@markh.6687 So true, it’s just not worth it. You know everything is going to be a hassle from getting paid to comebacks, ect. Even if you get paid to fix it properly you know they are just going to butcher something else and then come back and try to blame it on you! I’ve been there a few times and I quickly learned to just refuse to work on certain cars as you know it’s just going to be a never ending nightmare! Don’t get me wrong if someone screws up a diy job I’ll usually work on it as it’s normally not butchered they just forgot to plug something in or installed a bad part that sort of thing, it’s a judgement call.
This channel made me really appreciate yearly inspections. All those rusty/broken frames are accidents waiting to happen.

I've run into this issue myself when JB welding pocket change to a cracked starter.
Technically you could say the fuel saver worked very well, because if the car doesn't start then no fuel is used so that fuel becomes fuel saved. 11/10 fuel saver.
I remember the old Mark IV vapor injection from the 70’s. Supposed it increased fuel economy by 10%. I remember seeing a test of it in Road Test magazine and (surprise) it was ineffective.
yeah . .. and then there are the boneheads who think if one can get 10% "improvement", logically 10 would get 100% ...
And those things make no damn sense.
Why would automakers spend millions trying to squeeze 1 or 2 mpg out of their cars if they could just slap some $40 piece of crap on the engine, raise the sticker price by $40, and be done with it?

Yeah, that last clip with the cargo strap holding the truck together is all the proof you need to understand that when you get pulled over for one license plate light being dim the cop is just looking to fill a quota or is on a fishing expedition.

Always amazed at the innovation shown by amateur mechanics. I would have never thought of chaining the brake caliper. That was awesome! Also using pennies and dimes as spacers.

The "fuel saver" device works perfectly as you can't burn any fuel if you can't start the engine!
Most likely that vehicle was getting awful MPG since the engine is completely worn out as the bottom end noise would indicate.

Common. Everyone knows when you are installing wheel spacers and they need to be shimmed you can only use pennies or dimes. Not both together. 😊
How do you guys keep from laughing at customers like this?
It teaches us how to have a good poker face. When the compulsion to laugh gets overwhelming, we tell the customer we need to check the availability for parts and go in the back room and laugh!
After 30 years dealing with idiots, you kind of lose your compassion. And composure. I have no problem telling people the way it is. Maybe that's why I have such a huge client base.

I'm a master mechanic from Germany who do this job for 17 years. When I see this clips i'm glad that we have here a TÜV inspection every 2 years with very very strict rules how the car should be and how the mechanical and optical condition should be. Even a rust hole in the size of a coin on the body are enough that your car fail to the inspection and you can't drive the car legally on the road.
Some of these vehicles in your videos are absolutely terrifying.
Every 2 years wow, here in the UK we need an MOT every year
Some states have yearly every other year inspections... Unfortunately some states have zero so people can pick up cars from a junk yard and drive them on the road so long as it is registered.
@@TheDutyPaid every year is here only for trucks ( and every 6 months for a small inspection). But the 2 years are way more than enough because the requirements to pass the Inspection are one of the highest world wide.

It's pretty strict, but like I said, when I see something like this in the video ..... I'm glad it's the way it is.
Doubt if Germany has the population and number of vehicles on the road that the USA has -- plus each state, territory and protectorate all have there separate vehicle rules and laws.

he did have to diagnose it though. Should he work for free? They could have been fixing a car with an actual issue but now they've wasted time because of a wrong setting. So yea customer pays

Nice 6th gen Celica at the end. I had a ST205 GT-Four when i was younger and it was quicker and handled better than my brothers Evo 2. My Dad and uncle used to import used cars from Japan to NZ to sell to car yards from the early 80s to around 04, mainly family type cars that sold well back then, Coronas, Crowns, Corollas, Bluebirds, Gallants that sort of thing. After my brother and I came back from a working holiday in Europe in the early 90s, we got involved, and on a buying trip to Japan, convinced my uncle to buy some sportier models, a Nissan Pulsar GTiR, a R31 Skyline Coupe GTS and 2 FC RX-7s. These cars were available new in NZ, but were brought in in small numbers and were expensive, in contrast, back then in Japan they were cheap, and 2nd hand, bulk car lots had an amazing selection to choose from. Anyway, the cars sold fast for a good profit, so more and more of the stock were sporty models, by the 2000s 3/4 of the stock bought was the likes of Mitsi EVOs, Gallant VR4s, GTiR Pulsars, Mazda RX-7s and a few Eunos Cosmos, Type R Civics and Integras, Supras, GT-4s, and later GTR Skylines. Any space left in the containers was filled with used 400 and 250cc 4 cylinder sports bikes that were super popular in Japan at that time. Wish i'd hung onto a few, prices for these type of cars is insane here now.

I had a rental where it took me, computer-savvy and all that, several minutes to sort out the digital climate controls, the seat heaters, and some other stuff that in a soggy/snowy spring came in handy. My 2002 Saturn didn't have all these expensive bells and whistles.
In my experience, it's not that people CAN'T navigate menus, but they DON'T. The vast majority of consumers leave everything on default settings on any technical device they own.

Only $25 for the diagnostic fee. The rest is a "if you really want to pay for my time to do something you could have accomplished by reading the instruction manual, then I am happy to take your money" fee.

3:13 I had a Colorado like this, bought it used from an irrigation company before the pandemic when used car prices were low. It was a simple, useful little truck, drove it for a few years and did some work on it. The most annoying was a bed-off replacement of the fuel pump which had the output lines severely rusted, and re-did the suspension front and back. Through doing the work, I realized the frame was not going to be long for this world... sold it to the next guy down the line so it could get some more work squeezed out of it before the frame got too bad.
This video was so unbelievable, I had to watch it twice in a row! Wheel spacers? I don't need to buy washers, I'll tape on some pennies!

It only wobbled because they used two dimes instead of pennies. Everyone knows that dimes are equal to 10 pennies. Severely unbalanced causing the wobble.

That is a thing that is decided on the State level or possibly even county. The county I live in requires annual inspections. The next closest does not. The US is weirdly obsessed with local control over things but is inconsistent in application.
We need it in every state.... I would vote for it
@@scottrussell6717 Almost 50 years ago, Florida got rid of its annual auto inspections. I remember as a kid going with my parents to get the car inspected at the State inspection station.
As I remember, they checked the front end for bearings and tie rod ends, brakes, all the lights, tires, rust, wipers, wiper washers, and lug nuts. They would do a complimentary head light adjustment and air up the tires while you were there. Anything more and they would generate a list of things wrong with the car and you had to get them fixed within 10 business days and then return for reinspection. So, why did Florida get rid of its auto inspection program?
The well known reason, which old Boomers like me would remember, was that the Governor's wife had to wait over an HOUR in a long line to get her vehicle inspected! She let the Guv know that she wasn't happy with that. Next year, the program was eliminated. Citing the greater reliability in modern cars and that most auto accidents are caused by driver error and not mechanical failure. Yeah.... that what they claimed!

My brother has a GMC pickup just like the one on top, at the end. He has had it for many years, and rebuilt the engine once. As far as I know it still runs just fine. It is not quite as rusted out as the one in the picture.

@@berryrijnbeek5938 Not in all states. Some states do require safety inspections. Unfortunately, my state isn't one of them, but our winters are harsh enough that cars don't usually last long enough for those kinds of issues to crop up.
I used to hate safety inspections because it took up precious time. I’m the kind of person that fixes whatever needs to be fixed so leave me alone. I now live in a state that doesn’t require inspections and I now understand why they are a good idea.
I lived in a state that went from full on inspection to just emissions. Nothing changed. Didn't get worse or better. Now i live where there isn't any inspections and I'm fine with it. We shouldn't be subjected to inspections because of a small percentage of people who do dumb things.
I am so glad that we have the "TÜV" (biannual vehicle and exhaust inspection) in Germany. None of those cars would endanger other cars over here.
(except for the window one, that was very funny and sounds like something i would do without realizing)

I can see both sides - yeah, you could have checked the settings first as this would have taken no time or tools. Alternatively, you generally credit people with enough brains to have actually switched on the feature they claim is broken, so you'd bring out the tools.

Had a BMW come in a few years back that the owner wanted rebuilt. He brought in all the parts in a U-Haul and didn’t mention anything about why it looked the way it did until about a week into us trying to get the drivetrain into working order.
Apparently it was purchased in Mexico and brought across the border, having previously gone through a bar wire fence, had body panels brazed in place (the actual body, not just fenders and such), sat in the weather for a few years, and had an engine fire.
We knew it was going to be a project and a half, but when we finally got the story behind it and found all the brass from the brazing job we had the guy come back and take the thing away. Would have gotten rid of it sooner, but it had a few other cars ahead of it in the queue.
I loved that sheet metal screw through the strap and into the handle of that small plastic gas tank... 😁😁😁
