I was in rehab in the fall of 1998 in atlanta for alcohol and pill addictions. There was a guy in our group from England who opened up about a hard upbringing in a circus that traveled throughout the UK. It was heartwrentching story to hear, as his was a gypsy existence, with no normal childhood to speak of.
A few yrs later, I happened to turn on the tv and saw Sir William Regal on a wrestling show, and I immediately realized he was that broken guy in my process group at rehab, as I didnt follow wresting back in my drinking career to know who he was.
This rehab was a 3 month program, but professional sports teams used to check athletes in the program, and none of them ever stayed for more than about 3 weeks, as they were not checked in by their owners out of concern for their well-being, but to get them back to work to make them money. As a result, many of them cycled in and out of multiple rehabs before it finally "took." I have seen interviews with William and can really tell he finally surrendered to that way of life, and am happy to see him fit, happy, and healthy.

I remember I think it was on Chris Jericho's podcast where Triple H was mentioning he was a brand-new nobody in WCW and Regal took him under his wing and looked out for him even though he had no reason to. Triple H respected that about him especially in backstabbing environment that was WCW back in the day. I can definitely understand why Triple H is so loyal to him.

From whatever William Regal said here, it is clear that they both have a very good UNDERSTANDING with each other when it comes to their BUSINESS but Regal made it rather clear that they aren't really friends and barely ( if ever ) hang out with each other ( by their own choice ).
I guess believing Regal and HHH are best friends would give pleasure to your tender heart but sorry mate, we gotta keep it real.
Now if you talk about HHH, Shawn, Scott Hall and Nash, now those guys are what could be called best friends.

Regal is a legend, with great wrestling heritage. He was trained by Marty Jones, who in turn was trained by the legendary Billy Robinson who was in turn trained by Billy Riley back in the original Wigan Snake Pit. How much catch-as-catch-can wrestling knowledge was passed up that chain to William Regal and listening to interviews with him he credits that wrestling lineage

He was very entertaining in 01 as the commissioner and the comedy stuff with Tajiri, it's such a shame that he never got a run with the world title and i loved his little program with Triple H in the summer of 04. He's never claimed to be a great talent BUT his work ethic and the sheer graft he put in to learning his craft is why he's still around.

  • @anxofernandez3344
    @anxofernandez3344 Před 4 lety +2

One of these days Vince will abdicate on Triple H and then Regal will probably be fully in charge of NXT with Triple H overviewing things. Shawn Michaels will work with Hunter, people like Heyman, Jarrett and Road Dogg will be in charge of creative on the big shows, Michael Cole will be off of any announcers table and managing them instead from Gorilla and someone else will take over from Kevin Dunn to produce the show.

@@stueymorris The Black Country is the general area that encompasses Wolverhampton, Tipton, Walsall and Dudley to name a just a few places.
Birmingham IS NOT a part of The Black Country. People often confuse a Black Country accent and a Birmingham accent; they're similar, slightly different inflection. Some people can offended if you confuse their accent for the other in a similar manner to confusing a Canadian accent for an American one.
Regal grew up in Staffordshire - this explains what I can hear in his accent as I know hat I'm listening out for. I can also hear Lancashire in his accent but to me the Black Country is much more prevalent.

      @@stueymorris
Listening to Regal, I'd have said narrowed his accent down to South Staffordshire. Lo and behold, I've just checked and Regal was born AND raised in Codsall, South Staffordshire.
I agree with you that he sounds nothing like he's from Birmingham (I have already mentioned this). Also people from South Staffordshire will have a different inflection to those from other parts of Staffordshire, ie: The Potteries and The Black Country - Both in Staffordshire but so different.
So, South being the operative word in the name SOUTH Staffordshire.
As a person of a reasonable cognitive function, two working ears and having lived in South Staffordshire, East and West Lancashire (amongst other parts of the U.K); I can hear The Black Country in his voice. I can hear it in his cadence and vernacular. Regal uses both the regional dialects of The Black Country AND West Lancashire.
Regal himself has said in shoot interviews that he grew up "just outside Wolverhampton" (Codsall-Wood) and used to travel back and forth to Blackpool to wrestle in shoot-style matches before eventually moving there, aged 16.
Regal hasn't completely lost his Black Country twang, I just know what im listening out for.
