- I first heard this on Dick Gaughan's 1977 album Krist O' Gold. It doesn't seem to be available to buy these days which is a shame as I think it's his best, it is on CZcams though fortunately. I've tried to play some of his other songs but they're in Scots which makes then difficult to sing for English folk.
The words are from a poem "On Raglan Road" by Patrick Kavanagh and it's set to the traditional tune Fáinne Geal An Lae.

Great performance David. Dick's songs are timeless and so inspiring. Love that ol' guitar!
Thanks Jonathan! The guitar has seen some things...
✨👏
I love a good ballad!
Thanks! Me too.
David, this fabulous song evokes much. The covers by Mark Knoffler, by Sinéad O’Conner, are legendary. And, thanks, because you too beautifully draw out the poetic emotions.
Thanks Peter! I've not head the Knopfler version, I will check it out.
Hadn't heard of him, very nice!
Thanks Matt! Hope all's well in Sheff
Thailand ..nice!
Dubliners/Luke Kelly version is the gold standard
