From where I came from no one danced to this band. What we did was drive down a street at night with the windows rolled down and turned up the Pioneer radio as far as the knob would go to some Jensen 6x9’s speakers. When the transition from Foreplay to Long Time would hit, it was goosebumps every time. This album created so many great memories as teenagers. Back where no cell phones, no social media, no auto tune and life was so much simpler. I was lucky enough to live through those years and wish we could all experience what that was like. Today just feels like everything is artificial.
I had the alpine removable head unit with 6x9s in back 5s up front and a 12 inch sub in the trunk of my silver 69 Skylark with a 350 under the hood. Good times for all. We had the last great childhood.
@@dieselbourbon3728 let me guess. When you say Alpine removable head unit you don’t mean the face comes off. Do you mean the whole radio would slide out? If it was this then yeah, that’s wayyyyy old school!!!
You're speaking my language. I actually made boxes in high school wood shop to mount my speakers into and put them in the back seat of my 72 Nova SS. Had enough speaker wire to take them out and place them on the top of the car when parked with a group of other friends cars, we drank beer, partied and listened to music into the night. God, I miss those days.

Everything said above is true. As Producers you MUST read about Tom Sholz putting this album together almost in his basement. The vocals on much of Boston was Brad Delp layering his vocal tracks over other tracks. No fancy stuff, just singing over his own tracks flawlessly. Real music.
Totally agree, Tom had the bones, but needed the band to bring it to life. Barry played awesome, as well as rest of the band. I rode a ten speed bike to the record store when this album dropped, it was life changing.

@kennycamaro2361 Tom does not play a single drum track on this record, and this has been well documented from the first release of this record. Tom could not play the drum parts on this record not even after the third cold day in hell. Sib plays drums on every song except for one and Jim Masdea plays drums on that remaining song. Second, Brad wrote Let Me Take You Home Tonight, and that song was recorded at The Record Plant LA by producer John Boylan and the tracks are played by the band as pictured on the back of the record. Third, all of Brads vocals were recorded by producer John Boylan at Capital Studios Studio C. Fourth, Barry plays electric rhythm guitar on three songs. Barry plays lead on one song and lead/slide guitar on another. Fran plays bass on two songs. Brad plays acoustic 12 string on one song as well. This is all well documented and admitted to by Tom in the liner notes of the 2006 Scholz remaster of the 1976 debut Boston record.

Two thoughts about this album, after 40+ years of listening to it: 1) Use it to "calibrate" your headphones. If this doesn't sound absolutely delicious in them, throw them away. 2) Use it to "calibrate" your speakers, as loud as possible. If this doesn't sound absolutely delicious with them, throw them away.
When this album came out it was like nothing anyone had ever heard before. Mind bending at the time. Still so fresh and beautiful 😊 not one bad song on it.
They were so good, A 65 yo guy here and grew up with so many great bands and so much great music, For me it was and still is the greatest music ever! Went to see all of the concerts and it was not that much money for a ticket!😄
First...Frampton Comes Alive!, then Boston, then Van Halen! All three...game-changers! And I had to listen to them all through a Kraco head unit and Sparkomatic speakers! 😳But what a time to be a teenager!
Boston released their debut album just about a week before my 16th birthday in August of 76. It's difficult to describe just how huge this LP hit the music scene. It's one of the fastest selling debut albums in rock history. It went platinum in 4 months. It was an amazing sound experience for the beginning of the backside of the 70's. Another superb reaction gentlemen 👏
i was a sophomore when the boston debut album came out, in 1976, living in central cali, that album was fuqin fire on top of fire, 3 days a week after school a buddy of mine's mother worked everday till 6 pm, i live 2 blocks from this friend, we'd drive to his house smoke a joint of humboldt skunkweed, in his living room a wooden record player console with big speakers we would play boston the entire album and just trip hard on that music while looking at the album cover, every song on that album is fire 5 top 40 hits, then 2 years later, boston played live in fresno ca, they were fuqin even better live with a killer light and lazer light show back when rock ruled america and the world
After graduating from MIT, Tom Scholz was an engineer at Kodak. In his spare time he built his own equipment and studio in his laundry room. He played/engineered/produced almost everything and got a buddy to sing. He literally made the greatest debut album out of his basement. Peace of Mind was the #2 big hit off this album. Hitch A Ride is my favorite. You'll also like Smokin' and Rock n Roll Band.
Love your reaction(s). I'm a huge Boston fan. You mentioned the 'claps' , I read on the CD cover (maybe cassette) that they started out using actual people clapping hands. But everyone's hands got so sore, they ended up using sand blocks to make the clapping sounds.
What was impressive about Boston, beyond their amazing studio (Tom’s house) recordings was that their live performances were so good. They sounded like the albums. Crisp, clear and every musician capturing accurately what they had previously laid down. I can’t exactly remember when guitarists started adding “delay” effects routinely when playing live, but with Tom his “sustain” separated him from quite a few players, who at the time were still heavily into “feedback.” Turning the guitar facing the amp overloading the pickup signal. All three very cool effects to be sure. But Tom and Boston created their own lane, which is what the great groups do best. 🤘😎
70s rock is so top notch … before 80s synth pop (no offense to anyone) I’m a 74 baby, my stepdad would show me all sorts of tunes…he taught me how to use his reel to reel set up when I was 4… Any shot of reacting to Captain Beyond, track: Raging River of Fear?
I worked for Boston from 1976-1979. I used to help carry & set up their equipment at the Music Complex Studios in Cambridge, Ma. There is no one like the mastermind of this band like Tommy Scholz. And no other singer as brilliant as Brad Delp, who did all the lead and harmony singing. That's why they didn't sound exactly the same on stage.
This first BOSTON record is what you get when a bonafide M.I.T. Graduate, an electrical engineer and inventor, who also happens to be a musician, decides to make his own studio, his own equipment and a new, unique, sound. This first record is the product of one Tom Scholz working in his basement apartment. He wrote, played, recorded, mixed and mastered nearly every sound you hear. Other than the vocals by Brad Delp which are just amazing in every way, Tom did just about everything else himself. The guitar, bass drums and keyboards are all Tom! He did it so well, that when he got his record deal, the label forced him to re-record the album in their professional studios with the best of everything, and they couldn’t recreate what the guy did in his dorm and basement. They wound up using most of Tom’s original demo tracks in the final product. GENIUS!!
@jhc2093 Tom does not play a single drum track on this record and the record is far better off for that fact. As has been documented in the liner notes of every copy of this record that has ever been produced and sold, Sib plays drums on every track on this record except one. Jim Masdea plays drums on Rock and Roll Band. Second Brad wrote Let Me Take You Home and Brad co-wrote Smokin. This is all well documented as fact in the liner notes of every copy of this record that has been sold and Tom even as litigious as he is has NEVER disputed these facts. Then there is the fact that ALL of Brads vocals sans the vocals for Let Me Take You Home were recorded by producer John Boylan at Capital Studios Studio C. There is also the undisputed fact that the entire song Let Me Take You Home was recorded by producer John Boylan at The Record Plant LA. Also it is well documented that this record was mixed in LA at Westlake Studios by Boylan, engineer Warren Dewey who suggested that the band name be changed to Boston, and Tom with assistance from Steve Hodge. Third Barry who introduced Brad (who was Barry's brother in law at the time) to Tom back in 1969/1970 plays electric rhythm guitar on Foreplay, Long Time and Let Me Take You Home. Barry also plays the huge power chords in Long Time and Barry plays all of the lead guitar solos on Long Time as well. Barry also plays lead and slide guitar on Let Me Take You Home. Fran plays bass on Foreplay and Let Me Take You Home. Brad plays acoustic 12 string guitar on Let Me Take You Home. This is all documented as fact in the post litigation liner notes from the Tom Scholz (it was his pet project) remaster of the debut Boston record. A good portion of this is also documented as fact in sworn legal deposition and documents that Tom was forced to provide as a part of the law suits between he and Barry. @jhc2093 said, "He did it so well, that when he got his record deal, the label forced him to re-record the album in their professional studios with the best of everything, and they couldn’t recreate what the guy did in his dorm and basement. They wound up using most of Tom’s original demo tracks in the final product" This is utter and complete BS and there is absolutely no documentation to back this up and no one who knows how this record came to be would put up with that bunch of BS. Here are some facts for you. NOT ONE TRACK from the demo was used on this record. Anyone who has heard the demo can and will tell you this. Second no one attempted to duplicate Toms tracks at any major studio. After meeting with Tom and seeing how autocratic he was, Boylan agreed to let Tom record his instrument tracks for the record at his home studio, and to emphasize the point the tracks that Tom recorded specifically for the record do NOT sound the same as the demo tracks. Boylan knew that Tom needed help on learning how to record drums and acoustic instruments so he hired LA engineer Paul Grupp to go to Toms studio to tutor Tom, and then Boylan ordered Tom to re-record all drum and acoustic instrument tracks. Boylan also knew that in order to do Brads vocals justice, he would have to take over recording all of Brads vocals which he did ,and Brads vocals sans the vocals for Let Me Take You Home were recorded by Boylan at Capital Studios Studio C. Brads vocals deserved the top of the line in terms of mic-pre's, eq's compressors, mics and consoles, and that is why Boylan insisted on using a very good professional studio to record Brads vocals. Lastly your claim that "they" who ever that is ended up using most of Toms original demo tracks for the record is complete BS. Not one track from Toms demo that was sent to Epic and producer John Boylan made it to this record. Tom was forced to admit this when interviewed and asked specifically about the claim that you make. In addition, it is well known that the demos do not sound like the final product on the record as well.
Great reaction and some very insightful commentary as well. Thanks for sharing. This album, song, band is really just three guys. Tom Scholz was an MIT engineer working for a phot corporation. He wrote, composed, engineered and recorded this album in his basement on equipment he bought used, borrowed or created, patented and built himself. Tom plays classical guitar, 12 string guitar, lead electric guitar, rhythm electric guitar, bass and organ on this album, Brad Delp is the vocalist and sang lead vocals, backup vocals and did all the harmonies himself. Tom hired a friend to play the drums. So what you hear is really Tom playing the music Brad singing and Sib drumming. The entire albums is back to back bangers. In my opinion the greatest debut album of all time. Also this album was recorded using the patented pedal system Tom created which allowed him to switch tones on his guitar without changing guitars. Now every single professional guitarist and bassist uses a version of this system he invented and debuted on this album. Enjoy, Chris.
There is a great documentary where Tom shows a crew around the basement of the house where he recorded this album. He still has the organ he used to play this, and he uncovers it and fires it up right there in front of the camera and starts to play foreplay. It is amazing.
That Organ It is a VERY large pipe organ. You should give The Launch followed by Cool the Engine simultaneously, the First two songs off the Third Stage album.
You asked if this album made us move? No, we were so awe-stricken when it came out that we just stood stunned and soaked it up with every pore on our body. It blasted from boom boxes all that summer.

A TRUE masterpiece album from front to back!!!
One of the most iconic debut albums ever. It blew our heads off when we first heard it.
Whole f’ing album. Perfect rock music
Absolutely one of my favorite songs. It’s a jam!
Soundtrack of my youth. Even had a Boston belt buckle. Thanks for bringing this back!
Two thoughts about this album, after 40+ years of listening to it:
1) Use it to "calibrate" your headphones. If this doesn't sound absolutely delicious in them, throw them away.
2) Use it to "calibrate" your speakers, as loud as possible. If this doesn't sound absolutely delicious with them, throw them away.
The Launch/ Cool the Engines. Is a must
When this album came out it was like nothing anyone had ever heard before.
It's obvious that you guys truly love and appreciate music!! Thanks for your channel. Subbed.
Thanks for rocking wit us!! Have a great weekend.
Some of their best work...that first guitarlead is sick...
It was absolutely a dancing song and the room would be clapping along with everyone attempting to sing at that range.
I love the way the guitar seconds Brad's singing
When this came on at parties we were Rockin', Head Bangin', Air Guitarin' and singing the choruses!! 😎
When I was a tike, I shared a room with my older brother and he played the hell out of this. It's what made me want to play bass. The bass is badass.
Prob one of the best debut albums of all time! Every song is a banger
First...Frampton Comes Alive!, then Boston, then Van Halen! All three...game-changers! And I had to listen to them all through a Kraco head unit and Sparkomatic speakers! 😳But what a time to be a teenager!
One of the last 8 track tapes that I bought. This was fresh and different music in 1976.
Senior year in high school. Cutting class after lunch a going to lake with my friends. This blaring on the radio. Boston is a good band.
Another superb reaction gentlemen 👏
i was a sophomore when the boston debut album came out, in 1976, living in central cali, that album was fuqin fire on top of fire, 3 days a week after school a buddy of mine's mother worked everday till 6 pm, i live 2 blocks from this friend, we'd drive to his house smoke a joint of humboldt skunkweed, in his living room a wooden record player console with big speakers we would play boston the entire album and just trip hard on that music while looking at the album cover, every song on that album is fire 5 top 40 hits, then 2 years later, boston played live in fresno ca, they were fuqin even better live with a killer light and lazer light show back when rock ruled america and the world
R.I.P. Brad. What a stellar voice.
Brad Delp's voice is pure magic
70s rock is so top notch … before 80s synth pop (no offense to anyone)
I’m a 74 baby, my stepdad would show me all sorts of tunes…he taught me how to use his reel to reel set up when I was 4…
Any shot of reacting to Captain Beyond, track: Raging River of Fear?
BOSTON ROCKS GUYS!!!
This album is another I wore out when it came out, and THIS song is 💣💥!! The word you used was perfect.. SONIC!!
Timeless. ✌❤
“Smokin” and “Rock ‘n’ roll band” are a must off of this album 🎸🥁🔥💣
Go Boston!!!!
They wound up using most of Tom’s original demo tracks in the final product"
This is utter and complete BS and there is absolutely no documentation to back this up and no one who knows how this record came to be would put up with that bunch of BS.
The Drummer of Boston loved the band Steely Dan so much that he named his daughter Aja after the band's album of the same name. :-)
A lot more great songs to come from this album...!
My High Schools days ! Cutting class smoking tree listening to Boston ! NICE
There is a great documentary where Tom shows a crew around the basement of the house where he recorded this album. He still has the organ he used to play this, and he uncovers it and fires it up right there in front of the camera and starts to play foreplay. It is amazing.
Your audio continues to impress. Love to see appreciation for good music as well
Glad u guys enjoyed it , this was one of the greatest songs that came out when I was in junior high.
That Organ
It is a VERY large pipe organ. You should give The Launch followed by Cool the Engine simultaneously, the First two songs off the Third Stage album.
Thanks guys that is a epic song, the drummer didn't do bad either did he 👍
You asked if this album made us move? No, we were so awe-stricken when it came out that we just stood stunned and soaked it up with every pore on our body. It blasted from boom boxes all that summer.
Every song on this record slaps. Its one of only a few albums (like Led Zeppelin IV, Van Halen I) where every single song got heavy rotation on radio stations.
You gents just seemed to “get it” and went with the flow. Awesome!
Your body language was the BEST reaction you could possibly give.
Sconic guitar and vocals to the next level. As always, I appreciate your views on the mix and production of the music. Great reaction, guys.
This album rocks!
