R.I.P Mr. Belafonte. Thank you for the music and for powerful moments like this.
This is an absolute classic.
They should be showing it now one week before the 2020 election to remind America that nothing has changed in fifty- two years.Harrry Belafonte is a legend , an American treasure, a great entertainer, a heroic civil rights activist, the best of humanity’s
Watched Smothers Bros every week. My Mom LOVED Harry Belafonte
What a beautiful arrangement of popular songs under one themed music.
Marvellous, just marvellous.Better late than never to see this. The Great Man at his best.
Actually, this segment was cut by the CBS censors--and the airtime was sold to Nixon for an extended campaign commercial. Wrote about this in my dissertation (which was later included in my book). Still, a powerful juxtaposition of song and image.
Also one of the reasons CBS didn’t truly support the Smothers Brothers show ultimately leading to its cancellation.
@@ericla8356 they hated that the show was popular
@@ericla8356 It was a lot of things. If you read the book “Smothered”, the show wasn’t actually cancelled. CBS thought they had a right to preview every tape although there was nothing in the contracts that said that. One of the last shows of the season Tom Smothers left in the hands of one of his trusted producers & told not to give it to the network. When network heads demanded it, they were told Smothers had with him in San Francisco. At this point, CBS fired the brothers & they in turn sued on breach of contract which they won.
Yes, the last five nminutes of that telecast were "sold" to the "Campaign Committee To Elect Richard Nixon President"....... *and he won that November.*
Meanwhile, Canadian audiences saw this sequence without ANY censorship at all.
Best moment in American television ever❤
Peace be unto Harry Belafonte, actor, singer, activist. 🎸🎼🌷
As a toung man I did not understsand the real meaning of this song. I do know now. God Bless you brother.
They broke the rubber band with this one.
Thank God.
R.I.P. to the GREAT Harry Belafonte

Goosebumps...
My god this was ballsy 🔥
tpryce:
You’re off your mind .
One of the great parodies of all time.
R.I.P. Harry Belafonte
This is amazing
RIP Harry Belafonte. I wish modern comedians would uplift voices like his more often rather than spend time whining about how they're "not allowed to tell jokes anymore."
RIP Harry Belafonte😪🙏💔
Look how the National Guard acted to the driver and passengers in the vehicle.
excellent very famous theme here in the cradle of Calypso in El Callao Venezuela!
Venezuela is the cradle of calypso? I think you meant to say Trinidad 🇹🇹
Shoutout the bassist
So Young and handsome🌹❤️🍀
muy buena cancion en un muy buen programa añejo de TV...!
THAT IS SO OLD LOVE IT
Hard to believe something this edgy made it on network TV in 1968
That’s just the thing, CBS made them remove this prior to airing.
Similar to recently Amy Goodman being censored on Public Radio in Philadelphia for her segment on political prisoner Mumia Abu-Jamal.
great protest!
I wonder what would happen if someone took out the Democratic National Convention footage and replaced it with the January 6th footage. Would this medley convey the same message?
I was thinking at the time, how amazing it would be for a remake. I find it hard to image he himself didn't have the thought cross his mind.
What happened to his left ear ?
It seems to be pretty heavily deformed or stitched down unproperly.
Gaetz and Greeney, Gym Jordan, and a Kev McCarthy, split the party, now nobody be happy
RIP Harry Belafonte.
The Smothers Brothers hated LBJ. I don’t know their views on Nixon.
They hated Nixon even more. They hated LBJ's handling of the war but agreed with his domestic agenda. But they were on Nixon's enemies list.
diamonddog13 no they weren’t. I saw a interview Dick Smothers gave. He said Tommy actually voted Nixon in 1968 but not 1972. They were adamantly against Humphrey.
Nixon probably won the 1968 election because of the anti-war people who voted for him, hoping that he indeed had " secret plan to end the war." Turns out he was lying--again.
UN GRAN ARTISTA DEL CALIPSO😅
I would like to see this song played over the George Floyd riots.
The clown Dems…😂😂🤣🤣🤣
Terrible.....rubbish.....
Yes, you and CBS think alike, don't you? 😠
