I find it funny that Jonah is talking about turning the temperature down when in this same podcast he referenced that he wrote a book titled “liberal fascism” …he’s right that people should be more thoughtful and he should be leading that change by coming to terms with the fact that some of his deeply held beliefs about how the world functions and what the left is either needs to be revised or reconstructed

In America we have a shared narrative about Fascism, dictatorship, and Democracy. "Vote against the coming Fascist Dictatorship" literally makes zero sense given this narrative. Voting is something you do under ordinary circumstances. But in the state of crisis--which is what the rhetoric about Trump appeals to--there is no voting away the problem. So what is the appropriate response to this supposed crisis?

Jonah was using humor to make a point, as is his wont. Its perfectly clear that he was not suggesting Steve Bannon is an actual gargoyle with hooves. Unlike the folks suggesting that Trump (or Biden) is the literal equivalent of Hitler/Stalin/Satan/etc. in perfect seriousness.

People said that Trump's rhetoric was dangerous to journalists and Trump was later gagged by a court because his rhetoric was considered dangerous to members of the DA's office and investigators in the DOJ. But somehow, rhetoric suggesting that Trump is an existential danger to our Nation's way of life is harmless? C'mon.

I think Jonah has a great point. We need a better way to disagree. It is a basic tactic of the way to winning the other side is to intellectually explain your reasoning. However, for that to have a chance, we need a reasonably educated electorate. That is where we need to also focus. Even the WaPo has said Democracy Dies in Darkness. If that is so, we need a lot more transparency and honesty in media as well as a non-partisan grounding in civics. A lot of work to do.
