I had 4 Wyze cameras but I took them all down after dealing with false alarms, subscription fees, and poor performance. I have since moved to Reolink POE CX410 cameras and NVR for excellent AI, performance, no false alerts, and no subscription fees. If I had to choose between Wyze and Tapo, I would go with the Tapo C120. Great comparison review.

Your video editing and consistency test to test is amazing. You sync up frames and line shots up perfectly. I'm almost more impressed with your channel than with the products, lol. Thanks for putting out such quality content.

I have around 8 or so Wyze cams ranging from V2 to V3 as well as a couple of Cam Pans. The cams have always been great. However, the issue for me is the app. I've had so many software issues that I've finally given up. I bought two Tapo C120s and the difference has been amazing. So much better!

I was a big fan of Wyze and after trying out a V4 for a few days, I switched to a Tapo c120. I was a big wyze fan since v2 version but I think it's time to move on. Tapo also offers a subcription plan for up to 10 cameras for $35/year so I think this makes more sense to normal hourseholds.

    • @fooey88
      @fooey88 Před 4 měsíci +6

Just remember Tapo is newer so it is normal practice to build a customer base by using low fees and adding excess features. Once you gain a large customer base, you can't sustain that and be profitable in the future, so they will start to slowly lock features behind a subscription plan and increase the amount of $. It happens with EVERY company, not just Wyze. It's business 101.
Look at all the comments here. Most prefer the Tapo because of the feature availability and low entry cost (seem familiar? it was the same in the early days of wyze). It will take a while, but Tapo will also realize that this isn't sustainable as a business and switch over to basically a subscription only model.

Tapo’s subscriptions are more expensive than Wyze. It’s $35/yr for 1 camera, $70 for 2, $105 for 3, and a maximum of 10 cameras for $115. Wyze is $20/yr per camera but $100 for 99 cameras - cheaper than Tapo for only 10 cameras.

Very good review, I really like the way you compare or test the cameras. Looking forward to your next video.
ps. I have two questions about the Tapo C120 regarding video recording when motion is detected:
    1. If I am not using the continuous recording, how long is each video recording runs once the motion is detected? ie. If motion is detected in the scene only for a few seconds, will the video recording still continue for 25 seconrds, 40 seconds, or only as long as motion is detected in the scene?
    2. Is there any "blind period" between video recording due to sucessive motions detected? ie. If motion is detected in the scene for 5 seconds and gone, but then another motion appears say 6 seconds right after, will the Tapo C120 able to detect and record video of both motion?

I always enjoy the reviews. Wyze has been horrible constantly going down. IMO TAPO C120 seems to have superior stability and image quality. Dealing with the Wyze headaches and paying for a subscription with outages grows old fast. I started out with Wyze, but have soured on the brand because of stability. Defeats the purpose if "security" if they go down randomly.

I personally switched from all my Wyze and Google cameras to all Tapo. I have been extremely happy with them and I love that Tapo has a physical smart button, much like Flic, which is programmable for 4 different automations. They also have more automation capabilities within Alexa.

Great comparison! Like a lot of other people are doing, I'm getting rid of Wyze because of their almost constant outages, features that break, security issues, etc, and decided to go all in with Tapo. I've ordered several C120s, a C220, and a few C225s. Very happy with them so far and it looks like I made the right choice going with Tapo. I'm not sure about some of the settings in the C120 though.
Would you be able to explain how to configure the spotlight on the Tapo camera? In the C120's settings there is a menu for Spotlight Settings. That one is self-explanatory and just sets the brightness and how long the spotlight stays on. What I'm not sure about is how to configure the spotlight to turn on when motion is detected, or to not turn on and just use IR. Under Video & Display there's a menu for Night Vision.
    1. What does the Night Boost setting do? Is this for the spotlight or for Starlight sensor?
    2. Under White Light Settings, is this for the spotlight or for IR? This setting only shows up when Night Boost is turned on.
Thanks and keep up the great reviews and comparisons!

Love your videos. Have several Wyze OG, 2 and 3 and aside of lack of RTSP support, the main 2 problems have been: 1) How long it takes to send notifications 2) Without subscription, it leaves you in the dark for several minutes after the initial detection. Sound wise, apparently the Tapo is significantly worse, but it seems the app is better. A shame it's not available in Mexico. Curious how it fares, compared with the Tapo C320WS, which seems cheap enough and it's already available.

i think with wyze you can set a group of cameras and stream more than four cameras at a time. and that is with a mix of the v3 and v4 cameras. not sure about ogs or pro or other cameras with that group setting. all this is within setting them up as a group. og has that odd picture in picture as well where you can flip the primary views.
but rtsp is preferred, which wyze has been avoiding all this time in order to push their subscription model.

Tapo for me, the wyze cams V2 and V3 are now just for monitoring, things like 3D printer, birds nest or less important areas. Tapo has faster notifications and ease of use. Only thing with Tapo C120 i noticed is, if there are headlights coming straight at it, the software cannot recognize a vehicle. Im done with Wyze and their AWS failures.

I have found that the V4 does not work as say a dash cam like the V3 and the OG models.
I would have my v3 set to continuous recording.
When I left home it would record my trips , including stops when the engine was shut off, it would resume when the vehicle powered on again.
And could retrieve the fit age when I returned home.
The V4 does not do that.. it records for about 5 minutes, and does not resume recording when powered up after shutting the vehicle does.

Tapo and to a lesser extent Eufy are the best security camera makers in the United States. Unfortunately, brands like Reolink, Blink, Wyze, and others that are merely expensive with very few features always dominate the discussion.
