- On this episode of the Hockey Cards Gongshow podcast we start by honoring the NHL's (almost) greatest player to wear the number 94 for episode 194 (8:21). Next, Phil The Loud Collector returns for really the whole episode but he helps break down the anatomy of a good trade (18:57). In hobby news, we update The Road To Infinity, Utah narrows it's name search to a final list of six potential team names, and there's new PSA upcharges...yay (58:52). Will a high population count for the Connor Bedard base Young Guns PSA 10 ultimately doom it's market value (1:14:24)? We look at the top five highest selling Synergy cards of all time, then each share the new hockey cards release we are most excited about (1:30:54). We answer your mailbag questions (1:48:21), then finish the show with personal pickups (2:29:57).

I agree with LOUD PHIL - grading companies do not care about the hobby. KEEP YOUR CARDS RAW!
Grading companies care just as much as the card manufacturing companies... it's all a business with the goal of turning a profit.
First time listener and fairly new to the hockey collecting scene, but I loved the show! Very insightful, wholesome and just fun! Will be tuning in to future shows
We are happy you enjoyed! Thanks for sharing the kind words.
I was thinking the same thing about some of the synergy cards being like essential credentials - those cards in synergy and really nice. I ripped a box for the first time this year and was actually really impressed by quality of the cards. I think I’m going to buy select synergy stuff for PC purposes occasionally now (before I would have never considered it)
Also really looking forward to that ex-2001 set
Louds crew!
The Trio we all needed
Appreciate your support!
That Heaters Trojan horse actually had me laughing 😂
Us too hahahahsha….Phil
I know on Parkhurst Champions for the Veterans and Legends the back just says used in an official game, not explicitly an NHL Game like I've seen on other cards.
yeah don't love how it's getting more-and-more vague
beauty #10 @55:40 - hawerchuk was my babysitter a couple of times when i lived in a small enclave outside of the shhawaa. just sayin'😋
Thanks for chiming in....awesome card. That's quite the babysitter too!
Great episode, you guys are great, Phil is the man👍
Thank you Kyle!
90% of Canadians live within 100 miles of the US border. I went card hunting a couple weeks ago at a Walmart out of town and they had a full-blown Dominos Pizza in it; never seen that before.
Not sure we've seen a dominos at a Walmart either lol.
kinda liked the quiet new guy! he will find his voice in the hobby soon...
Yes, we are trying to get him out of his shell. So reserved!
I might have missed it, but one thing I don't think you explained with the PSA upcharge was that it includes "insurance" for the authenticity of the card. PSA is really the only grading company that stands behind their slab by paying out for faked/altered cards that were not caught in the grading process. There are numerous soccer stickers that have been faked over the years (Ronaldo rookie sticker/Messi Este sticker/etc) that have made there way into Beckett/SGC/CSG and PSA slabs. People are still buying these faked stickers due to being slabbed. PSA is the only company that I am aware of that reimburses customers on these in PSA slabs. It has almost come to the point that many soccer collectors will only by PSA slabs due to the payouts if later determined fake (which is partly funded by the upcharge on these more expensive items)
It's sadly hilarious that they force the end consumer to pay "insurance" which really only covers psa inability to properly authenticate a card. How can they possibly justify it as a premium to cover the cost of their own mistakes (while having the side benefit of good PR when they do mess up) is beyond me
It's a good point and we didn't mention it so thank you for chiming in. I do feel like they should stand by their own work or make any sort of insurance you might want an elective charge.
@@hockeycardsgongshow Agreed that they should get it right the first time and stand by their work, but it appears for the most part that PSA is the only one fixing their mistakes and paying back owners of cards for those mistakes, and the upcharge is what they point to that allows that. Since that "insurance" stays with the slab and not the original submitter, it means anyone buying a legit PSA slab gets that benefit if they purchase that slab at a later time. There is a case of a $100K Messi sticker that was purchased that was later shown to be fake, and PSA corrected that error by paying the owner (from what I heard, no first hand knowledge). There are a number of faked items in Beckett slabs that Beckett fails to do anything about. Granted, I think it makes less sense on Modern cards, but there was that recent news story of fake Victor Wembanyama prizms. In all honesty, I would prefer a grading company that just does that insurance aspect and throws the grading part out the window
Pop counts matter!!
Hype always beats logic when it comes to card collecting.
Way to keep it simple and true
PHIL!!!! Again!!! 😮
Never enough Phil!
I don’t think there’s flippers staking out targets for Series 2 in my area, it’s 3 months since release and there’s zero retail product on retail shelves. But enough at the LCS with the up charge price. I kept hearing how much this product was overprinted.
Seems like there's some shenanigans happening.
I'm convinced that @theloudcollector is one bad cup of coffee away from being on the evening news.
Bedard is just like Wembayama. Priced in. 7 championship baked into the hype. At least McDavid is actually good.
I think the BGS pop of the jagr, mcdavid, and bedard also have to be factored in when talking about viability as I assume there are not nearly as many bedards as jagr (1000 9.5+) or mcdavid (8300 9.5+)
Additionally the Jagr price and pop count are also results of grading not being as popular in the early 90's but the over printing being insane (at least for other sports)
good point. Jagr's BGS 9.5 pop count for 1990 OPC Premier is 995. You'd think Bedard's total between PSA and BGS will surpass Jagr's total in a couple of weeks. McDavid to your point is 10k+ combined.
Even if Bedard is top 20 player of all time, his prices will go down. Maybe his YG is worth $200 in a PSA 10. It's too high of a pop count. Prices don't drop fast unless he's bad, so there's still some demand even though supply is outpacing it.
Appreciate you chiming in with your thoughts Jason!
Make Phil a regular! The 3 person format works great. Great episode boys! Agree - PSA is totally gross.
Appreciate the kind words!
Great segment on how to rip off Loud Phil in a trade... :)
hahahahaha.....he's smarter than he plays on TV
