    Good evening jinni, I’m still using all purpose flour I stored over 6 years ago in canning jars .

    • @loves2spin2
      @loves2spin2 Před 7 měsíci +1

      Is it okay to just put the flour in the jar, or do you have to put it in some sort of bag first when vacuum sealing?

    Good tips Jinne! One way that I’ve stored flour is to use my vacuum sealer. Initially
    , I put the flour in a lunch sack then folded it over and put that in a vacuum seal bag then suck the air out. But I realized the process is much easier to put the original bag (opened but then folded up again) into a gallon sized vacuum bag. Then seal until the bag is as hard as a rock. It works great to do it this way! Of course, I freeze the flour first for several days but then I make sure the flour is completely thawed and has been left at room temperature for a day or two before placing into the vacuum bag. Don’t want moisture to get into the flour before sealing.

    • @joycedagostino8869
      @joycedagostino8869 Před rokem +1

      I do the same, the trick is to open the bag and then re-fold down the top of the bag, tape in place and then do the vacuum sealing.

  • @janeparker1009

    I put mine in brown paper bag and vacuum seal them or if it's a small 5 pound bag just seal it in the bag with your vacuum sealer.

    Now that’s good news to me! I’ve heard on many channels flour lasts no longer than a year? Even in Mylar. If it lasts longer I’m relieved! I just opened my sealed bucket that I put in Mylar with oxygen absorber. It was perfectly fine. I’m working thru it now.

      I am using whole wheat flour back from 2020 and it is still fine. Now getting to white flour, I have used white flour that was about 4 years old and it was perfect as well and actually stored in the original package.

      @@cm9743 This is crazy…many channels say 6 months to a year for white flour. Both channels are very popular in pressure canning and cooking. But I must say I too am using flour over a year old. It is in a Mylar bag, oxygen absorbers and tucked inside a gamma lid 5 gallon bucket. My basement is dark and cool at 50 degrees which they say is perfect. So I proved them wrong. But wow…they say no longer than 6-12 months. I’m very happy to hear this as I have other buckets and quart jars full of flour. The glass jars look great. I check every so often

    I freeze my all purpose flour for about 24-48hrs, {wrapped in a food store plastic bag} then take it out, and let it defrost, {I'm in Florida with AC on to help with the humidity} and then just throw it in it's original bag into a plastic 2 gallon bag, Mark the date, and put it away. With flour from 3 yrs ago, I just baked bread with, and it's great. No taste change, no weevils!! I do the same with all grains, spices, and pasta. No more Mylar, but I DO rotate it as I need it. We had Aldi's flour for 99¢ for 5lbs about 2 1\2 to 3 years ago, so I got 15. It's kind of like money, in that it's now 3x as much. We make bread both in and out of a bread machine and THIS really works well. Thanks for showing people how to make self rising & Cake flour! My granny did it, Mother did it, now I do it. It's perfect.

    • @dragonslayer7587
      @dragonslayer7587 Před rokem +2

      No. I just wrap it tightly in a regular food store plastic bag. I'm trying to keep the flour from taking on any tastes the freezer may have... Then I take it out, set it on the counter to defrost, removing the plastic bag, then after that, I just store it in 2 gallon plastic bags. I NEVER take it out of the paper. I had a bad experience with O2 absorbers and mylar, so I don't use that either anymore. I do this with all grains, including Rice and beans. It's been working well for me. NO weevils! No mould!

    Helpful tip, not so much to do with flour. I keep a quart freezer zipper bag, and i cut the directions off the bulk boxes from Costco. Like if you buy a bulk brownie mix box. Keep instructions and put bags in jars.

    I didn't see this in the comments, so I'll ask: don't you worry about getting flour dust into the pump on your vacuum sealer? I've heard that unless it's in some sort of bag to stop it ffrom becoming airborne in the container, you risk that, and damage to your sealer. Thoughts?

      I have read reviews where they use a coffee filter to place on top of the flour before vacuum sealing.

    Should you freeze wheat berries before storing as well?

      I do if they are not already packaged for long term.

    Thank you for your video.
    I've only had one 10kg (22lb) bag of flour "go bad" because it was stored in it's original paper bag upstairs in the hot pantry too long. This was back at the start of the Planned Demic.
    Back then we went from a two bucket rotation (22lbs per bucket) to a four bucket rotation and didn't I "lose" a bucket in the scramble?
    I found the bucket of flour two weeks ago stored in my deep, dark, cold, and dry subbasement. This flour was bought at the beginning of 2020 with a BBD of 2021 and here it is almost 2023.
    Couldn't still be good could it?
    Of course it could! I'm eating it right now.
    It's all about the storage conditions as far as I'm concerned. But you mention that, ...
    Good luck all.

    Dont bake alot. I store 100 pounds of flour in mylar with O2 absorbers. After ten years I throw it out and get new. Short term flour I have maybe 20 pounds in 5 pound bags and rotate... if I use the long term flour I dont care how it tastes so much as the world has ended. Love the instructions on making cake and self rising flour..I try to keep self rising on hand but don't use it enough to justify it now that I can make my own. Many thanks!

      I put 3 cups of flour in the lunch bags and vacuum seal them so I only open what I need. I have also vacuum sealed whole bags of flour as well.
