  • A question guns-n-gear folks love to debate is, "What's the best nylon tactical sling?" Adam Holroyd of Spiritus Systems decided to methodically test many popular tactical slings before concluding the Sierratac sling was one of the best. Then he got a license from Sierratac to manufacture it. Adam joins Brownells Gun Tech™ Caleb Savant to tell us about the benefits of the Spiritus / Sierratac sling. A key component is the METAL adjustment slider, which is far less likely to break than plastic adjustment sliders. The Sierratac slider is easy to locate by feel and operate under stress to adjust the sling when your focus is on other events. It locks securely in place, so the sling stays where you set it.
The tri-glides at the other end are reinforced POLYMER. Polymer is strong enough for normal use but WILL break if you need to get disentangled from the sling in an emergency. If your sling gets caught when you're bailing out of a vehicle under fire or rappelling out of a helicopter, you'll want that tri-glide to break! Quick-detach sling swivels are hard to release when there's a lot of tension on the sling. For less extreme operations, QD swivels are easy to install on the Sierratac. There's also a rubber retainer band that snugs the sling to the weapon to prevent it from snagging on something in the first place. The Spiritus / Sierratac sling is available in PADDED and NON-PADDED configurations. Adam explains why it's good to have BOTH on hand, if you can.

As a company armorer, the amount of times I’ve grabbed an m4 and the sling took 2 or 3 more m4s with it and smacked me in the knee.

Good on the guy for innovating and chasing improvements. But I have to say that my Vickers BFG sling has never snagged on an aircraft or a vehicle, and my plastic adjuster piece has broken exactly 0 times in 6 years. I've also never not been able to adjust my sling in tje dark due it having a closed loop tab of material.
I think, like a lot of modern "tactical" gear, that this is a solution looking for a problem.

@Strat Abuser wow, it's almost like accidents happen albeit few and far between and some people are afraid of metal bits sticking out causing possible further injury of something that would normally take only 3 seconds max to recover from. Get out, use your stuff in a variety of conditions (normal range, wet leaves outdoors which are very slick, etc) and youll learn that accidents can happen and why it's a valid concern.
Im a younger guy that gets out in the outdoors and uses my firearms and i have really good balance (can stand up in fairly unstable kayaks and canoes) and i have fell going uphill on steep hills with wet leaves coating the ground as well as in a few other conditions. Only happened a handful of times to me in roughly a decade and a half of going outdoors since i started as a kid but i would still rather not fall on something small and metallic on my ribs or back, which is where products like magpuls slings and the Vickers sling are vastly superior to this due to flat buckles. If you want the easy pull feature the Vickers has a pull strap that's even larger and easier to use than the metal bit without the concerning part.
Im not saying it's a bad sling, and the original comment wasn't either, just pointing out an objectively bad feature on what is otherwise probably a good product because of people having used stuff in conditions besides range use in optimal conditions and clearing our own house cause of a bump in the night. Criticism helps fuel innovation and product development, having an inflated ego bc "I never fell in my life except when i was a kid bc i likely never do anything in somewhat dangerous conditions" does not.
