Washington Today (4-30-24): Judge holds Donald Trump in contempt for violating gag order with posts

- Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) promises a “House-wide crackdown on the virus of antisemitism spreading throughout college campuses" as committee chairs announce investigations into the pro-Palestinian protests.
House Republicans advance a bill that would write into law a new definition of antisemitism. A final vote will be later this week. House Democrats are advocating for a different bill to increase funding for the Education Department and Justice Department’s Office for Civil Rights.
Education Secretary Miguel Cardona is asked about the campus protests as he testifies before a Senate Appropriations Subcommittee. He is also questioned about the troubled updates to the federal college financial aid form FAFSA.
House Democratic leaders say they will not allow a motion to vacate to remove Speaker Johnson to succeed, and Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) brings it up, they will vote to table, or kill it. The Democratic leaders write, “At this moment … the time has come to turn the page on this chapter of Pro-Putin Republican obstruction."
The judge in Donald Trump’s hush money criminal trial holds the former President in contempt for violating a gag order nine times with online posts attacking potential jurors and witnesses. The judge fines him $9,000 and warns that more violations could result in jail time.
