  • In addition to growing rice, soybeans and cotton, Lee County farmer Nathan Reed also has a land-leveling business. Rather than spending several hundred-thousand dollars on new tractors, Nathan has started to purchase discarded, decades-old tractors at a fraction of the cost and is restoring them as a way to save on the cost of equipment for his operation. He is using the money he is saving to buy land, which doesn't depreciate and expand his farm. Like all farmers, he has to watch his bottom-line and because he enjoys restoring old implements, this works for him. He explains how in this update from his farm near Marianna.

This is the future, Prices on everything have gone nuts and in order to survive the old ways will be coming back. The average person can not afford to buy a new whatever every 5 years or so. Back in the day people fixed things instead of throwing them away and with the cost of repairs and down time on all this so called reliable computer controlled stuff is insane, people have had enough of high priced, unreliable garbage. The right to repair bill is a prime example on why older vehicles, equipment, and machinery are being restored. Glad to see this happening.

Man what a deal. I am not a farmer so I don’t know much, but I have been wondering for years why more farmers don’t refurbish and bring back stuff from the 70s - 90s. No emissions, open parts, tougher built, less computers. Sounds like a win to me.
