I always feel that the live versions are the 'real' version of Chinchilla's songs.
And they are usually so different to the studio versions that I feel like Chinchilla is almost doing a cover of her own songs. 😎
She has an amazing voice - that run up to 'woman scorned' always send shivers down my spine.
She can go from a whisper to a fire-breathing dragon in a single breath.

James, big ups to you once again for doing both versions. Love your eloquent analyses, and your appreciation for Chinchilla’s talent is undeniable in your facial expressions. I do love vibing to the studio version, but yes - her live versions are simply _beyond_ - and they do seem, in a sense, “the true iteration of the essence of the song” (I think that’s how you put it) supported so brilliantly by Ze on Keys. Not only is Chinchilla such a consummate performer with a brilliance at rendering a lyric, I don’t think her performances cannot _not_ feel anything but authentic ❤‍🔥

I think its interesting to note that in "little girl gone" where Chinchilla had much more control of her output the studio version is just as good ( if not better) than the live version . I feel the fingers vidio is a sexed up and watered down version of Chinchilla and the fans have shown over and over that the live ( full strength ) Chinchilla is the preferred version, as I notice that is always recommended to reaction channels .
Thank you for a great reaction

Kudos for doing the studio/live thing. The omv is visual fun with a fun audio backing track, whereas the live capture is utterly *compelling* imho. Shoutout to the pianist coming up with that arrangement, & great playing, on the keys btw- he's no slouch... I believe he had just come off an Emeli Sandé tour as MD at this time.
Anyhoo, great reaction / analysis vid. All the best from a new random subscriber in Scotland! :)

Fingers OMV was the first video I watched of hers, and I could not get that A minor melodic line and then the staccato notes as I would fall asleep. It was just on loop.

Chinchilla really has a way with structuring melodic moments with such punctuation where they really stick with you! Particularly her use of staccato. I've been having parts of Cut You Off, Little Girl Gone and Fingers just randomly pop into my mind over the past few weeks.

Yet another insightful and brilliant reaction James. Fully agree, the two versions are very much different songs, whether in song structure, order and chord progressions and also seemingly in intent. One can imagine coming off the club dance floor having just maxed out to the studio version without having giving the song much thought and entering a chillout room to recover and then to start contemplatively reflecting on the live version being played in the background, without actually realising it's the same song.
Your observation on the youth angle for the studio version was inspired, it answered something thats been in the back of my mind about the studio version, particularly about the character behaviour progression that moves from almost enquiring/idealistic but disturbed characters, through self-resenting stages, finishing with hitting-out/acting-out behaviour. Almost as if exaggerated characterisations of certain aspects of youth.
The studio version of the song also seems to have two possible interpretations, one being face value interpretation where the chalk outline represents the victim of the rageful karmic revenge of the characters. This is the anthemic interpretation that seems to resonate with most people.
The other interpretation is the song is inwardly focussed and self-referential with the final phrase "And she's in the shape of me" referring to the reveal of the chalk outline shape in the final jump scene to the last beat of that phrase and not to karma (e.g. depicts Chinchilla's or a character's outline - which would also be a literal link with the song's "and if I were you" phrase). This alternative interpretation aligns with all the lyrics of the song albeit looking at them from a different perspective, making one wonder if this was Chinchilla's intent all along that the song can be interepreted in many ways. Such as with the characters being fearful of loosing control ("I wouldn't wanna fall asleep") as they know that self-loathing and/or persistent nightmare is going to come the fore ("’Cause karma's comin' back for you"). The "One by one. I'll cut your fingers clean off. So you can never pull me down" representing the character's over-thinking/self-critism attacking aspects of themselves in attempts find answers and boxing up emotions/memories/thoughts that are troubling.
These two interpretations are also interrelated as both can be true at the same time.
Perhaps this may have played into Chinchilla's and Ren's developing their collab Chalk Outlines later in the same year as Fingers was released.
Apologies for the stream of conciousness, but your comment on youth got my mind racing and tied up a number of loose threads. Once again thank you for an excellent and thoughtful reaction, this studio vs live reaction is such an excellent approach. May I be cheeky and suggest a visit to the studio vs live accoustic versions of NOEP's & Chinchilla's song FK This Up, which are also completely different in style with Chinchilla saying so much in so few words.

I'm really glad that I could help tie up some loose ends for you.
I think during filming I was more in the first camp of taking it on face value but once I began editing I definitely started finding the other interpretation that you've mentioned and the potential connection to Chalk Outlines.
I'm definitely considering checking out the NOEP & Chinchilla collaboration tracks and I'm very glad you mentioned that there is both studio and live versions as I also have been enjoying this comparison format.
