    A little added info, we have taken this route as far as the Urals about 10 times,(about 17 hours long, +,-) so here we go,,,,
    1st class is 2 beds, 2nd class is 4 beds, 'but' you can buy all 4 beds in second class, which sometimes is less expensive then buying 1st class, and still have the cabin to yourself!
    The 1st class you showed was a newer car, which all cars will be someday, as the trains are going through a period of renewal. the newer cars have electrical outlets as you showed under the 'fold up table'(yes the table folds up), the older ones only have one outlet in the hallway, and maybe another in the bathroom. And there will be a waiting line to charge up your phone!
    I haven't seen the tv's work yet, so can't say anything about that.
    Food at the stops,,,you gotta be careful, we bought some cooked chicken at a stop once inside a terminal, and we both got food poisoning for about 36 hours!
    Walking around outside the train, you gotta be careful, the train will leave, they run a very tight schedule, and you'll be left if not careful.
    The food on the train was pretty good, but we mostly ate Ramen noodles like you did, there are a lot of varieties for sale in Russia, and they are very cheap. The hot water station you showed is the same on all the trains! There are also a lot of excellent, cured salamis, great Russian bread, and excellent choices of mustard in Russia to make yourself a sandwich!
    Your attendant in your car, (there is one in every car), will supply you with a spoon, and hot water cup if you ask!
    Yes you have doors on 1st and second class, but they don't lock unless you are inside your cabin. So if you leave the train, remember you could 'loose' something in your cabin! We never left our cabin empty, someone always stayed around!
    Our experience in traveling in Russia,,,,,Russians love warm, so in the winter, our cabin was over 80, yes we got the attendant to show us how to open the window in January!-)
    The older cars do not have AC, so in the summer, with the window open, its still a little warm, we brought a little table top fan! We found the most comfortable times to be the spring and fall to travel on a train!

    Restricting filming in the train is actually illegal, according to Russian laws you can film practically wherever you want. But I guess you won't be able to argue about your rights too much, with that language barrier.

    • @wyc7tjmf794
      @wyc7tjmf794 Před 6 lety +34

      They thought these two are western spies.

    • @Mocsk
      @Mocsk Před 6 lety +63

      +John Smith well it doesn't really matter what they do or don't like, the law allows to film in public places without any restrictions.

    • @Mocsk
      @Mocsk Před 6 lety +26

      +John Smith you can upload anything filmed in a public place unless it's not within the copyright law (filming in cinemas for example). If the sole main object of the video is some particular person, only then you need consent. If they happened to be in your video while you're filming something else, then you don't. For example, if you're filming the trans-siberian railway and you approach a member of staff to ask some questions, or ask your travel companions something on camera - you don't need their consent. The greyness of this area is that it's practically impossible to prove in court that the object of a video was one particular person. So in practically any situation you're allowed to film and upload whatever you want, unless you're somewhere without public access.

    • @Mocsk
      @Mocsk Před 6 lety +17

      +John Smith that is incorrect. It has to be the main subject of the video, not just the main object in the frame. I can be filming, for example, a traffic law violation, and the main object in the video would the person who's breaking the law, but I won't need his consent to publish this video as I was filming a violation, not a particular person. There are many court cases supporting this already.

    • @Mocsk
      @Mocsk Před 6 lety +9

      +John Smith ok, you might be right, I didn't see a lot of cases where there wasn't any public interest. But then again, how do you define public interest? If you're, for example, filming an overview of a particular service (trans-siberian train service, for example) in the interest of the public (whether or not it's worth the money, if it's safe, comfortable, whether it's as advertised, etc), and someone happens to be in your frame - you're not breaking any laws. In fact, any video you're making for whatever reason you can upload to youtube and come up with one or another explanation why it might be in public ineterest to publish this information. As far as I know there is no legal definition of public interest (correct me if I'm wrong), and as long as there isn't - you can film and publish whatever and whomever in public.

  • @GeorgeCatcher
    @GeorgeCatcher Před 6 lety +39

    Some technical facts about Trans-Siberian. First of all - electricity in a wires above the train changes several times from AC do DC and back. That's why the engines that carries the train also changes several times during the whole trip. So this engine on 5:35 - is EP2k and it runs on DC.
    You started from Moscow where also DC in wires. And then system (and engine) changes to AC at the only 176 km from Moscow (in the city Vladimir). That's also the reason why trains stops on some stations.
    Another interesting thing. While you "carriage attendant" ride whole trip from Moscow to final destination of train, the guys who actually drive the train (sitting in the engine) - they don't. They drive the train for 250-300 km, and then on a station they just jump off and drive another train back. And another couple of drivers jump in your train and ride it for another 250-300 km. And the same happens whole trip.

You guys are lucky! ;D Our trains have only like 4 rooms of first class and the rest second class, and there is no restraunt place :( If you look above the beds, those lights, there are headphone slots. You plug your headphones in, and you can pick which radios you want to play. I remember, when I last went, I was listening to a film, that was like a comedy themed. Little tip: PECTOPAH is what the word for "Restaurant" looks like with Russian alphabet (I commented once before when you first visited Moscow, but don't think you saw it!) and I just saw it plainly on the door to the train's restaurant when you entered and checked out menu. Love watching you two! Did 57 countries over time commencing at about your same ages! Travel is the best best best use of money, time, energy....as you know!
    You are doing a bucket list item of mine after traveling through western parts of Russia in 1975...back then Iron Curtain was definitely still in full force and they assigned a "guide" to our group (camping tour based out of London) in those years. yes there is a restaurant car in every transiberian long distance train of the RZD. Kara and Nate There are. And the food is quite nice, actually. People used to eat there a lot more than nowadays. They prefer going out of cars during stops and buying some snacks from sellers that stand right on the platform, or just buying the food in a shop right before getting on the train. Speaking of food, the most popular type of food among the travellers are the ramen noodles, because you only need to add hot water which is served in all cars. All people who are poor do that, and most of them only sleep during the whole day, because less movement means less energy loss and less food to consume. The others, who travel by the 2nd class, prefer to eat in those cars because the food that is served there is, of course, much better. Instant ramen noodles are full of sodium glutamate and other bad stuff and the people that eat them regularly are considered very poor. You will see these people when travelling by the regular, old 3rd class trains. RZD gets rid of these trains in favour of the new 2nd class and double decker trains, but this kind of 3rd class will always be in our hearts for how much we hate it.
    Gee, that was a looong comment...

    As much as I know, there are some good rules to follow on foreign trains. And the first is to never leave the car without your documents. They should be hidden in the inner zipped pocket, so that they would not be easily dropped or stolen. In many countries one can get in real troubles, if one leaves the train for several minutes without the documents, then misses the train and is being left at unknown little place, where even policemen don't speak English.
    Another good rule is to carry with you spirit serviettes/disinfecting serviettes/hand sanitizer and disinfect all the handles in your compartment with it (the same applies to the door handle in the toilet).

    • @povorot70
      @povorot70 Před 6 lety +5

      The conductor will not allow the train to leave until these two crazy Americans return to the car. There is no need to have spirit serviettes/disinfecting serviettes/hand sanitizer because cold climate and low population density are Russia's advantages: pathogens germinate slowly and there is no one from whom you can get infected

      Nicole Lauren Blake In fact, traveling a few days by train is incredibly boring. )))
      Therefore, Russians prefer to fly a long distance by airplanes.
      But in the form of a bonus when traveling by train you can closely see the fantastic super-lake Baikal and other incredible beauties of Siberia.
      About the restaurant. Usually they serve high-quality Russian food (salads, hot soups, dishes from various meats and chicken, juices-fruit drinks, alcohol, tea-coffee). The food is natural, simple, tasty. Personally, I would not save on food, but would prefer to plan the expenses for a restaurant in advance. There is not so expensive in my opinion.
