Nuns usually run and administer Catholic missions. There are 600,000 nuns around the world.
The Church operates more than 140,000 schools, 10,000 orphanages, 5,000 hospitals and some 16,000 health clinics.
Mother Teresa's "The Missionaries of Charity" are a religious Order distinguished for their work in the fringes with unimaginable individuals and places, with some 4,500 nuns in more than 133 countries, who in addition to the three vows of poverty, chastity and obedience, make a fourth vow of “free and heartfelt service to the poorest of the poor.”
They freely assume risks-even life-threatening ones. Their missions in Yemen, Syria, Iraq, Haiti, and other countries torn by violence place these women in harm’s way every day....this is Christianity in action..

Thank you so much for your show. As a convert to Catholicism (currently in RCIA) I understand these questions but to have it further explained was appreciated and informative. Thank you. Just to share: I had prayed several times weeks ago for guidance on choosing my confirmation Saint. I felt as if it wasn’t to be until 3 nights ago. I was in bed in the early hours and I heard a voice. That voice told me twice, Saint Helena. I had never heard that name and didn’t know what to make of it. At 5am I’m on my phone expecting to find out that no such Saint existed. Boy was I wrong. To actually have her choose me has been such a spiritual blessing. Praise the Lord. May God continue to bless this ministry.

I'm from Buenos Aires Argentina and work at a Catholic school on the outsides of the city, an hour and a half by bus. The school is at a humble area, most families do a great efforf to send their kids there. The school also gives a lot of lowns and economic help. They even Feed people during the pandemic (we had one of the longest quarentines in the world, and many parents of our kids couldent work cause of it). So we may not have the best teach, but the Focus is clear: we know our work is to lead students to Heaven. Is hard, cause it depends on if the families are involved in religion and the kids's religious paths (I think thats the case for the kid I was talking about). We are not perfect but there is an ideal we aim towards. I feel blessed i get to be a part of this journey. Prayers for us and the families are very welcome, thanks!

One of the most difficult things about being catholic is accepting that nearly every person you know and/or love will burn in incomprehensible agony and terror for all eternity.
According to catholic teaching and the saintly accounts and apparitions, heaven is reserved for only a infinitesimal minority, as few as one or two in million with some going to purgatory and the VAST majority falling into hell. God being all knowing and powerful knows nearly all his children are burning in agony but will never free them despite his ability to do so. They will endure this for all eternity, FOREVER, in this state of pure agony and terror.
Nearly every you know. Your parents, family, friends, children will endure this fate.
And even if you make it to heaven, you will have to live forever in paradise with the knowledge that nearly all those whom you loved are burning in agony and terror FOREVER.
They are burning in the same lake of fire if they raped and murdered children or if they had sex with their life long wife before marriage and never made a good confession.
But the fact that most people who ever lived, are living or will live will burn forever in hell is ultimately Gods will as he exists beyond space and time and knew this would be the final reality and ultimately nothing happens without him allowing it, so be it.

Catholic fasting is hardly able to be called fasting at all imo. One meal and 2 snacks is lightweight. Many people only eat one meal per day and are healthy. I’ve found that I get more from fasting (for me) when I give up something that I need to struggle to abstain from. For me, limiting screen time, adding in additional prayer time, volunteering my time or skills, all give my fast days a bigger boost.

(One Orthodox person on social media had told me, I admit, that the strict version of fasting as above is really done only by monks or nuns.)

The other day, I heard Fr. Gregory Pine speaking about the whole "Prayer to the Saints" debate, and he mentioned something that really struck me.
    (I'm paraphrasing here.)
If Protestants understood what the Eucharist means for us, they would *never* be able to accuse us of worshipping anything other than God; because, whereas the Eucharist is "the source and summit of *our* faith," they can only go so far as to throw their hands in the air and ask for things or give praise and gratitude with poopy acoustic guitar music, or whatever. That is *their* highest form of worship, so naturally, they see us asking the Saints for intercession and *think* it's the highest form of worship only because it is the highest form *of which they are capable.*
When the celebration of the Eucharist, the *highest possible form* of praise, is reserved for God and God alone, then we can properly see the light of Christ reflected in all of His creation - through Mary, through the Saints, through the Papacy and the Magisterium, through Apostolic succession. Our faith is so much more than whatever that other stuff is *precisely because* we reserve for our Lord an entire level of worship that Protestants don't even bother to access.
When Fr. Pine was speaking about this, far more eloquently than I can, in that quintessentially Dominican way, I just couldn't help but feel equal parts gratification, clarification, and pity.

Our Italian tradition re: newborns (1940-50s) was to go directly from the hospital to the Church to have the baby blessed. Also, baby would not leave the house until it was baptized within a 2 months range. I continued that tradition with my own children in the 70s.

Okay, Catholic now but not growing up. I grew up in the Anglican church and we make the sign of the cross (Apostolic faith). My friends thought I was Catholic because no one knows what Anglican is. Was asked "wait. What's that?" by a fellow RCIA member. I guess I took it for granted as a child and thought every christian understood it! I was shocked when a non denominational friend of mine told me I "couldn't" do that. She didn't know why but she said it was wrong. I wish I'd better understood back then but it's part of what led me where I am today!

Ironically, we lived in St Augustine from 2010- 2022. While there, the Lord brought friends into my life, many of them very devout Catholics. One friend invited me to attend Easter Mass at the Historic Cathedral in 2021 and I gradually started attending daily mass at the Mission Church, our Lady of la Leche- Fr Richard’s old stomp in’ grounds. I used to believe that Mary what the best biblical role model for women. Where as men had several role models to learn from. I now add too the above that men should humble themselves to Mary. The rosary is an excellent exercise to practice humility. Many men in the USA have feminine characteristics due to men being raised without the present of a strong male role model. Pray the rosary and be humble by a woman who has endured so much more with so much less than men living in the USA today.

Praying with saints in general follows the advice of Jesus that "when two or more gather" that one's prayers will be granted. So that's regular saints, and people would have an affinity for one saint or another according to the person's personality and experiences. But Mary goes beyond this level, because she can initiate her intercession, as she did at the Wedding of Cana. She saw a problem and intervened to solve it, even though she wasn't asked. Even though the people at the wedding probably weren't even believers yet because Jesus had not yet revealed his ministry on earth. So Mary's intercession goes above and beyond. It's for this reason that I changed the way I pray the rosary from "Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us..." to "Holy Mary, Mother of God, thank you for praying for us..."

I like the spacing out of the sacraments of Baptism, claiming the graces for the infant asap, first confession followed by first communion at the age of reason when the child can understand the beauty and are open to the teachings and confirmation when the child is old enough to know or learn what the Church teaches at an appropriate age. Confirmation,I believe , although a different sacrament is what many Protestant faiths consider Baptism. My daughter in the ‘70s made her 1st Communion a year before her first confession. She has no connection about the need to be sin free when approaching the Blessed Sacrament. When I questioned that practice I was told I was “old fashioned”. So glad the Church has changed this practice. Catechesis during the 70s was horrible and my children do not know the faith and do not practice.😢

When my parents were kids, they got confirmed at First Communion. When it was my time, the Bishop only came every three years but I think the age was 12. So because there were some immigrant kids in my class who would have been older in 8th grade, they were going to be confirmed in 5th grade but that upset some of the other parents so we all got confirmed that year even tho we were less than 12. This was in 1957 and I was still 10. But, I definitely knew what was going on and was very excited to be receiving the Holy Spirit. I agree with Fr.Rich about this.
