  • Somali Pirates vs. US Navy. Have you ever heard of the pirates of Somalia? Somali Pirates vs. US Navy. The group of people who wield not just cutlasses and pistols, but power and chaos in equal measure. But imagine a scenario where these pirates try to attack the mighty ships of the US Navy - those that are armed to the teeth and equipped with state-of-the-art technology; often exceeding 300 meters in length with the capability of displacing 100,000 tons!
What would happen when these modern pirates try to mess with the deadlist ships of the US Navy fleet? Don’t underestimate the pirates though, they’ve long evolved from what’s depicted in the tales of infamous Caribbean pirates and the legendary feats of figures like Blackbeard and Captain Kidd. Today’s pirates are the real deal - and if you think they don’t pack a punch, you might be wrong!
Join us as we delve into the gripping account of how a notorious band of Somali pirates set their sights on the MV Faina, a ship transporting a large cargo of weapons, including tanks, ammunition, and other military equipment. We’ll soon discuss what happened when the US Navy deployed the USS Howard destroyer, and how it took the United States and several other nations to negotiate with the Somali pirates for the release of the ship - leaving us to wonder yet again, do pirates actually stand a chance? #usnavy #pirates #aircraftcarrier

The fact that the pirates know that we're not starting with lethal force/weapons is what emboldens them to try anything in the first place. If they knew that even encroaching our space would result in immediate casualty, it would most likely deter them from thinking about anything at all, since the outcome would be pre-determined.

Ignorant. No, when you are living in a society that has collapsed, and you can't eat most days, then death isn't scary. Why do you think there are no pirates in the USA? You simply don't produce pirates in a land where even the homeless can eat their fill. Reflect on yourself, ask yourself why these desperate starving people turned to piracy in the first place, then question why your first option is killing them. Then you'll have your answer.

As a former petty officer in the US Navy, I can assure you that it would be impossible for somoli pirates to take over a US warship. The only reason they would have to board a US warship would be to try and obtain loose weapontry that may include side arms like the M1911 or M1911A. US warships also carry other weapons like shotguns, M14s, grenade launchers, and various other hand-held weapons. Somali pirates would not, nor could not, take over a US warship. They simply do not have the training or the firepower. Their only hope is to try and board the ship in the attempt to find something of value. They will most definitely fail and die in the attempt. It failed to respond to a message so we put a 5 inch round across her bow to get her attention. She responded then and identified herself as one of ours. As a Vietnam era veteran and civilian sailor, it is obvious piracy on the seas cannot be tolerated anywhere in the world. Most of us have some degree of sympathy for those desperate people who must resort to lawlessness to survive. However, the virtually universal principle of "fire when fired upon" appropriately applies in most instances of piracy. In cases where non-lethal force is used as an initial deterrent, the pirates can consider themselves quite fortunate. However, this less threatening approach, if it becomes standard US policy in confronting piracy, will indeed act as an invitation. It is a long-established sociological fact that the most effective crime deterrents are increasing the probability of being caught and the severity of the consequences. Dr. A

I think the problem emanates from the abuses of foreign nations that have gone to the shores of Somalia and commenced to overfish and dump trash and toxic materials into the waters off the horn of Africa. As is with often the case, rich nations go to what may be considered to be poor nations and become environmental terrorist creating animus and hostile depositions with the people of those nations. Much of this is a response (though to some extent the targeting is misplaced) to those thoughtless actions that affect the livelihood and well-being of the people of that nation.
Using lethal force on a regular basis will likely increase the likelihood of the willingness of some of those pirates to then raise the stakes by responding with lethal force much more frequently. The US, nor are other nations interested in putting their warships at risk by amping up these skirmishes into a worse situation than already exists.

Are Somalian Pirates still a thing? Any ship should have the right to protect its sovereignty by any means, in international waters! If attacked, the crew should have no obligation to rescue surviving pirates, nor should they even obligated to report the encounter. Once a pirate boards a ship, the pirate shouldn't have any humanitarian rights whatsoever. The crew should be free to do what they want with the pirate, and should set an example for other pirates as to the consequences of boarding a ship without authorization. The only way to stop piracy is to make it too risky to be worth trying.
