My Grandfathers Mother's Dads Dad was JohnTipton! I've done our family tree and traced everything back it that cabin and before. It's very cool!

Hi Keith! That's awesome! My extended family traced our lineage back to the Tipton Place many years ago, but I don’t have a copy of the ancestry. I really wish I did. The Tipton name is extremely common here in East TN. Thanks for sharing!

@@travistipton8754 I am going to try to message you and send you a link. It's basically the history of all the families that are associated with Cade's Cove and the Smoky Mountains. This is where I found all my info so I'm sure you can find some information too!

Also my favorite place because it reminds me of the farm house my grandparents lived in when I was growing up.
    If memory serves,
The first outbuilding was the smokehouse. The second was indeed a wood shed.
The "barrel" was actually used to hold a bee hive.
The first barn is a grain crib.
    Our barn was built similar.
They stored corn and possibly wheat in those.
Those racks on the wall are indeed for hay and they functioned just as you thought.
The horses/mules- whichever they used- were lead to the creek then fed while they cooled off before being put in the stall.
The building up from the steam I've always heard was the pig pen. You'll notice it didn't have a floor unlike the first one you visited.
At one point it may have been a springhouse possibly also.
    The house
I've heard Mr Tipton was a businessman of some sort and the smaller front door on the right was his office.
    Now the story.
About 30 yrs ago we were biking through the cove and had stopped here to eat and rest.
It was middle of summer so the place was packed.
We were walking through the house and there were two ladies in the kitchen like room.
If you'll notice, on the wall behind the door, there's a couple of holes in the wall.
They were imagining all sorts of things that they were.
    One of them said
That's so they could sho*t indians!
I POLITELY interjected some common sense.
If that were the case, they'd shoot through the back porch roof and they couldn't see what they were popping at.
Plus, the Cherokee were friendly to the people in the cove.
Before the park, they may have actually gotten power into the cove, so those holes may have been for the water pipes.
They didn't appreciate the history lesson since no indians were harmed in my tale lol
My family moved across the mtns from Randolph Co NC and also down from Washington Co TN to where we are now and for the past six generations.
Both sides of my family pioneered in McMinn Co before it was even a county. Lol
I know I sound old but I'm just 53! Lol
I figured out early in life to listen when the elders talked and taught and those were and still are my fondest memories.

My Mothers side of the the Tipton family it is her great great aunt and uncle. I think that the Tiptons were maybe the second or third family that lived there.

The missing floorboard in the hayloft was more than likely intentional. They would drop a bale of straw or hay down to the horses when needed.

Hi Karla! Welcome to the family. 😊 There are a ton of Tiptons in East Tennessee. I guess it makes sense if we originated from Cades Cove.

I heard that many of the cabins were moved to different locations to facilitate the stops on the loop. Is this in the original location. BTW thanks for the excellent tour.

Hi John. That's a great question. I'm honestly not sure. I feel like this was the original location since there are several structures and considering their location to the water source. However, it would be interesting to know which ones were moved. I'll see if I can find out more information.

Hi John. You got me curious about your question. The Gregg-Cable house near the grist mill and visitor's center is the only one I could find that was moved. The rest appear to be in their original location. Good question.
