I enjoy hiking in the Smoky Mountains of East Tennessee. I started this channel to provide information on each trail in case it is one that you might be interested in hiking yourself. Please subscribe if you enjoy these videos. It's free and gives you a notification when I publish new videos on CZcams. Also, please leave your comments under each video to let me know what you think. I will try to respond to all of them, although it may take me a couple of weeks. I tend not to monitor my account until it's time to upload a new video. Thanks for watching. - Travis
Heritage Centers vs Visitors Centers
I have driven by all of the visitor, heritage, and welcome centers over the past several years but had never stopped at any of them until now. I discovered a lot of history in the museums and heritage centers. The visitor and welcome centers had gift shops and information on local sights and attractions. Overall, it was a great day to learn more about the local area in Maryville and Townsend, TN.

Great Smoky Mountains Heritage Center

My wife and I visited the Great Smoky Mountains Heritage Center located in Townsend, TN. It contains a museum inside of Native American and Early Settlers history. Behind the main entrance is a small village of cabins showing what life would have been like in early Appalachia. It includes a moonshine still, blacksmith shop, printing press, cabins, barn, and small church. It was a fascinating ex...

No crap! It’s we’re those rich kids cause millions of dollars in damages, lives lost and they got away with it in 2016! I live in Pigeon Forge and live Gatlinburg but it’s sad a lot of buildings are still charred from that year
Tyranny, in the name of safety, is still tyranny.
When did they close it? Is the Road Prong trail still open?
It closed back in November of 2016 after the deadly fire. Most of the trail is accessible now except the last quarter mile due to safety concerns. Road Prong trail is still open. I hiked it just a few months ago.
I hiked this trail in the late 60s with my brothers. It was a good sound trail back then. I went down one of the flues. Others went past us to the 2nd peak. It was a very firm solid ridge. I went about 16 years ago. There was a sign posted talking about the deaths from falling. There wasnt a gate. We went on up but the trail was very bad and we went off trail to try to go around and it was horrible with a lot of loose shale rock being held together with rhodaden roots. It was like walking on a spring mattress. Its not worth dying for. Go hike from metcalf bottoms to laurel falls instead. Safe hiking. Only leave footprints. Only take memories.
I wish I had hiked it before it was closed down after the fire in November of 2016. The root system was destroyed and the ground is completely unstable. Agree, not worth the risk when there are so many other good trails to hike.
It's our property!!!
Agreed. After the fire in 2016 the root system was destroyed and the ground became unstable. They closed it for safety concerns.
Congratulations on the 1000 subscribers Travis that's awesome!! I'm playing catch up on videos I been crazy busy and this was first one that popped up. Thank you for making this video we have driven past this seems like a 1000 times and never stopped, next trip it's must!!
Thanks Pierce! Good to hear from you. We've driven past it for years and finally decided to stop. Glad we did. It is extremely interesting.
We just got home from our trip to to the Smokies. I can't wait to go back!
Nice! Where did you go in the Smokies?
We stayed in Pigeon Forge, and we drove in the mountains. It was a short trip, but we walked on the Sugarlands Valley Nature Trail. It's great if you don't have much time, or can't walk very far. It's also paved for wheelchairs, and has 10 benches spaced out on it, if you need to sit down. We had a great trip, and will be back in August with our family.
@OnCallMamaw That's awesome! I love the Sugarlands area. Glad you got to visit!
Wheres the skateboard crew ?! All they needs a broom.
Ha! I hadn't thought about that. It would be a heck of a ride! 😆
Worst trail ever.
Ha! I've come across a couple that are worse. Chimney Tops has a ton of steps, but it does have a good view.
You are gonna laugh at me Travis..but yrs and yrs ago..as I've mentioned to you and your wife in other videos..I'm afraid of heights..the very first time I went to the tower..I got down on my hands and knees and crawled all the way up to the top!😂 but..I can now do it the way normal people do😂😂 y'all have a wonderful nite!!🙏❤️🐎
You faced your fears Laney! That's awesome! Plus, it's a nice view from the tower. 🙂
Congrats Travis!
Thanks Rebecca!
hiiiii
Hello 🙂
I'd disregard that sign
Hi Cheffrey! Many people have ignored the sign. A couple of people have had to be rescued from there recently. I'm hoping the ground stabilizes soon, and they remove the sign.
Ramsey Cascade is much more worth the hike. Charlies Bunion also.
Hi Eric! Thanks for the recommendations. I have them both on my list to hike soon.
Congratulations on 1000 subs, Travis! My husband and I went here years ago, but it looks like they have added on. I just love the history of this area. The people are truly blessed!❤
Hi Lisa! I can't believe I had never stopped there before now. It contains a ton of history and is extremely interesting.
Friday nights they have concerts at the outside seating area Can go on website and click events Have you been to the Abby in Townsend?
Hi Deborah! Thanks for the concert info. We'll have to check it out. We went to the Abbey for the first time a couple of weeks ago. Plus, we stopped there again yesterday. 🙂 It's an awesome place with plenty of seating, great food, and very nice people.
So beautiful and serene!
It really is!
Correct me if I’m wrong but isn’t runoff a pollution type (water pollution type)
Good question. I looked it up just to confirm, but it can be natural or by human activity. It is where there is more water than the land can absorb. I've always called it runoff, but maybe I need to find a better term. 🙂
Oh no your good I just never knew it could be natural
@@ShadowFreddy127 No worries. I always appreciate the questions and feedback. I sometimes worry my terminology might be local to East Tennessee. 😄
My favorite place to go ❤! Thank you for the video.
Hi Laura! That was our first time visiting Chimney Rock, but it won't be the last. That place was great!
I luv nature
I agree Matthew! Nature is incredibly beautiful.
That's my favorite spot on that trail!!
I always like it when I get a good view of the mountains when hiking. 🙂
miss Gatlinburg! !
Gatlinburg is an awesome place!
Good morning Travis..bern having lots of trouble with my phone..thats why I havent commented in a good while..this video is so nice to see..reminds me of the view I have when I open the curtains to let the morning in! Have a beautiful day🙏😊🐎
No worries Laney. Glad to hear from you again. Seeing the sun come up over the mountains is always an awesome sight. 🙂
Go home we don’t like tourists. Unless they have a purty mouth!!! We don’t need anyone to keep ruining the trails and wildlife
Someone stole the chimney! Apparently the house also. Honestly that is beautiful country.
Ha! Yes, from that angle, it does appear that way. From the ground looking up, it does resemble a chimney. It is an extremely beautiful place to visit. I'm glad I had the opportunity to go there.
And in 5 years all that land will be subdivisions and apartments full of Californians and Notherners at the right our local politicians are raping our land for their money.
I'm hoping the land is protected since it's in a State Park.
went there on my honeymoon with two wives
It is definitely a great place to visit. Hope the honeymoon was nice!
We took the hike in 2016😮 awesome ❤
Agreed. It was awesome. That was our first time there.
Awesomeness 😎 thank you 😁
Thank you! That place was awesome.
New subscriber from Fayetteville NC!!
Hi Chris! Greetings from East TN. NC is one of our favorite places to visit.
I love the peaceful feeling from hearing the water run down thanks for sharing
Hi Kelly! That's one of my favorites also. Thanks.
I climbed across it when i was a kid. its very narrow and one slip and i wouldn't be posting this today. the fire also made everything unstable.
Hi Rocky! I haven't had the chance to climb past the gate. I'm hoping they reopen it at some point. However as you mentioned, the ground is extremely unstable from the fire.
Let’s not forget those that died as a result of that fire and those responsible walk free, never held accountable.
@rustyshackleford2910 Agreed! Such a tragic event, and no consequences for those responsible.
That might have been a ghost!😮
Yikes! I hope not.
Looks like a bear 🐻 sitting in the right side!
I hope not! If so, he played the best game of opossum ever. 😆
When i was there all i heard were yankees 😅
Not this guy. I'm born and raised in East TN. 😀
The yankees have invaded
Ha! Lots of neighbors up north visiting.
Sometimes us yanks tire of the White Mountains. An hike in the smokies is good for rehab.
@@billetboy4070 I've never had the opportunity to visit the White Mountains, but it looks pretty nice online. The Smokies are great, but I'm a little biased. 😃
Bypass
Hi Kacie! If they don't re-open it soon, I may have to. 😀
I went up there a few months ago and saw the gate. I didnt go around but you can see where people were going around and ignoring the signs to not go any further.
Same for me. I didn't go around the gate either, but there was a clear path where people had ignored the warning.
Thanks, Travis for this video! We love to picnic at Metcalf Bottoms, but have never been to Meigs Mountain Cemetery. We do love the old cemeteries though.
Hi Lisa! I've enjoyed Metcalf Bottoms ever since I was a kid. We used to go there for picnics also. The cemetery was an unexpected surprise the first time I hiked this trail. I wanted to go back to film with the GoPro 12. Unfortunately the weather wasn't great that day. I plan to go back this winter to see if I can find the old Henderson homesite.
I remember the days of the wire bunks and the chain link enclosures.
I believe they had to remove the metal beds and fencing due to lightning. However, I think I could sleep better with a fence to keep out the bears. 😁
Ah the days when one could go all the way out.
I've never been. I'm hoping they open it back up before I am unable to make the hike.
One of my favorite trails. Going up one the oldest roads in the Park.
Hi Deborah! This was definitely a good trail, but it was more challenging than I expected. Still an awesome hike though.
At least it was easy to get around!
Luckily this one was, but I've had a few this year that have been challenging.
How long is the trail? Is it mostly steps?
It's only 1.4 miles round-trip and the trail is mostly flat with a slight incline. There are only a few steps on the trail itself. It's located in Chimney Rock State Park in Lake Lure, NC. If you explore other areas of Chimney Rock, there are ALOT of steps.
I can't wait to see it in person again!❤
Very peaceful
Thanks Wendy! Yes, it was extremely peaceful that day.
I have had some people say it's creepy in the woods alone but I think it's invigorating!
Hi Jodie! I agree. Hiking alone is extremely peaceful. Plus, you get to see a lot of wildlife that you might have missed otherwise.
The beautiful Smokies ❤
Agreed! The Smokies are great!
I was just at Newfound Gap and Clingman's Dome today 🙌❤
Hi Janet! That's awesome! Hope you had a great day in the Smokies.
You are still gonna talk?I like your talking too.
Thanks Rebecca! I have been letting nature do the talking for me on the short videos. I thought everyone might be tired of my long-winded commentary from the regular videos. 😄 Maybe I'll try to talk on some of the shorter ones in the future.
