This game feels like some type of big metaphor for grief to me.
The calmness at the beginning of unpacking in a new house. It's like everything is different yet the familiarity is apparent (like how the lady looks familiar). Everything is different without his wife yet it's the same. Dreams plague his memory.
The water is like his guilt, always there in the back of his head. He can always here it but he tries to drown it out as much as he can. He tries to hid it until he can't. It is disgusting. He hates it but he doesn't do anything to get ride of it.
Eventually he starts to breakdown. The guilt hits him. He starts to feel closed in, isolated from everyone as the windows start to close. Downstairs where the water is he tries to leave but he can't. Guilt overruns his. It swallows him. Everything has changed. And he's starting to realise that. The house is upside down and he starts to think deeply. He 'talks' to his wife which is more like him reflecting on himself. He realises that he can't keep living like that. The house is now calm. It's exactly like how he put it together; nothing has changed, except himself.

I love how this game allows you to decorate the house. Probably the best way to make the player form a connection with the location
You just confirmed my hypothesis about the game.
To me, this house looks like his dream house that he dreamed of with his future with his wife and with his unborn son/daughter.
But the tragedy takes place and his life is thrown into a tantrum, the guilt of not protecting his loved one's wife and unborn baby grows over time as we see when the MC checks the basement the puddle grows bigger every time. As time passes, the situation gets worse he starts to see his wife everywhere (Hallucination of wife much likelihood that MC was suffering from PTSD). Also, blaming himself to the point, that the loss of windows and doors portrays the struggle to let go of his past(He is trapped). The "TV part" shows he is narrating himself as someone other person in his own head the "tapes" were the events that he is hanging off before and after the unfortunate tragedy.
The housing being upside down shows the darkest moments the MC suffered, the fear kept poisoning his dreams and the shards of shattered future enhanced his guilt. The gift part and the locked room show that a new chapter of his that was about to begin was sealed forever. He imagined that he threw those baby accessories but he actually kept it subconsciously. The slime that was formed represented the new flesh and skin(Unborn baby of 9 months) taking inside Jessica.
In the end game choice, there were two choices-
1. To Jessica and the unborn baby and fulfil his dream-- AKA perform fatal self-harm, cause that is the only to meet his dead family.
2. Not to join Jessica and the family--- He escapes the past and tragedy forever while starting a new life.
If I woke up without windows in my house, I would go insane. I mean yeah I usually spend all my time in the basement on my PC but at least there's light coming out from the windows at the top of the wall. I know I'm not like a plant or anything but still, everyone needs sunlight

this game is kinda beautiful in a way, it's a story about how you don't need to let your trauma or experiences control your life. easier said than done, but it can be done. this game is just a twisted interpretation of what it's like to live with a recently traumatized mind and being trapped within your own guilt. i do wonder if the person in the tapes is maybe our protag tho
I was pondering the same, or that perhaps it was "one who came before" trying to reach out to him and let warn him what succumbing to grief would look like
@@Chronicler9 possibly! like a sort of forewarning? like a sort of "hey, this is what happened to me. don't let it happen to you" thing, that could definitely be the case as well, esp since the neighbor lady at the beginning says she "knew the house" meaning that she had some connection to it
my main reason for believing that the tapes might have been the protag himself were bc the mc said that the grief extended through the tapes into his soul. if we go off the assumption that the house represents his inner grief it could be a warning from his subconcious maybe? the fact that there are people that communicate to him from the outside of the event and outside of his house is interesting though, i wonder if the house could also be a more literal labyrinth as well, externally morphing to the traumas of the resident rather than being just a mental reprentation of those traumas

It'd be interesting if that last bit were true and they made an extended connected universe of one-shot stories that on their own could be interpreted as possibly mind-palaces or spiritual representations, but are actually literal places in like some strange town or strange places that exist around the world in different spots or something.

I love how, of all the things they describe to you in detail, the slow disappearance of all the doors and windows is completely left to you. It makes YOU feel like you’re going insane, not just the protagonist.

This story is so many levels of horror and suspense. I don't think I've ever felt so stressed from an 8bit Ryan video
Due to this game revolving around guilt and grief, I'm under the impression the entire part where the windows and doors disappeared and meeting the entity was either a nightmare for the character or a temporary break from reality due to grief. I've seen a lot of games that revolve around grief and guilt that follow this similar pattern of confronting an entity only to discover it was the character's own demon within him, great game overall.

That clay filter thing you picked up in the kitchen is a water filter and it works by using minerals and rocks to give you clean water it's kinda like a fridge water dispenser but cleaner

This game genuinely does reflect the dissociation from extreme trauma and grief very well. Incredibly impressive delivery of a way to experience these emotions second hand in a game. Mad props to the developers.
