Strange Indian street food in Udaipur.

  • My first morning in Udaipur finds me trying one of the city's most famous street food dishes called, satori, when I meet a man who invites me to his home.
In this home with magnificent views I meet my new friend Shanka's family including his blind brother who mucs lay face down for twenty days to help with his condition. He has undergone many operations for his cataract issues but nothing has worked.
I'm served chai by Shanka's sister to be told she cannot reveal her face either in public or in the family home due to local customs and traditions.
Walking the streets I meet a silver merchant who makes fun of my baldness when I ask where to find a barber, and we talk about India's favorite sport, cricket.
I get lost in the back streets to watch local life in Udaipur play out in front of me before I get a head shave.
My first day in Udaipur was a really fun and interesting time meeting some very hospitable people and eating some authentic Indian street food.

The veil culture evolved over a period of time, primarily because of hordes of marauders from North West India/ Pakistan/Afghanistan who used to prey on womenfolk. They hid behind the veils not only as a mark of respect to family but also for protection from the marauders

Please visit Andaman and Nicobar islands, they have the best beaches in the world, it's very close to Indonesia but it is Indian union territory not too many people go there , because people only got to Delhi , Mumbai, Rajasthan and South Goa.
You can experience completely different things from mainland India.

Yeah.....viel/purdah tradition.....never existed in Indian culture......Ladies were equally part of big gathering, meeting, politics, defence etc.......bt it came into existence bcz of islamic invaders......dere disrespectful disgusting attitude towards womens(specially othr religion following womens) as just a sex tool...... brought dis 4 dignity, respect n safety.
Today its considered more of a respect 4 elders.

There can be many reasons for covering the head but the biggest reason for Ghughat started was to protect one's daughters-in-law from the Mughals and other invaders. Since India was ruled by the Mughals and the British for thousands of years, the practice of purdah has become deeply rooted and people have added it to Hindutva😮

rather than visiting the touristy places, it was nice that you veered your attention towards mingling with the locals and trying to know about the local mindset, their thoughts, values etc. It was sad to see Shankar's brother battling blindness and good to find that he had a smile on his face and his family was taking care of him. I wonder if as a traveller I had ventured in a Aussie small town I would be welcomed into someone's home. Would I..? God knows. Make it a channel about people Wayne, that would be your USP. Do share bits & pieces about yourself too.. best of luck Wayne.

Hi indro, thanks for taking the time. Shankar's brother was a very high spirited man who looked at the world positively as far as I can tell, and it could be understood if he didn't. And it's fair to say there wouldn't be as many Australians who'd throw their doors open to strangers off the street and welcome them into their home. The idea for the channel is to make it about people, hopefully many more will take the time to introduce themselves. Thanks for saying hi, indro.

But slowly this is also going away you can only see this in villages more. The people of Rajasthan are well respected for their culture all over India. Known for their self respectful and Kind nature.

@@fiascodagama1It is interesting how most people don't know about the veil culture and it's origin.
It was because of the Mughal invasion mostly. To protect women of all age from the eyes of invader because they would kidnap and do horrible things to the women. So , they started to hide there face in public and in front of guest coz' you never know who to trust. You will see this prominently in northern regions where a lot of invasion took place.
This got passed down as culture even now a days but in reality it should not be practiced now a days.

    My advice to you:
    1) start the conversation with namaste with the localities that would create a base.
    2) do the financial transactions through digital payment this would help the govt initiative to go digital and hold some liquid cash if necessary.
    3) use cab booking apps like Uber and Ola for good price other than getting looted by the scammers.
Hope this would help you in the future.
