Norfolk and Western 611: Steam on the Mountain Sub Oct 2023

  • Its been 30 years since Jack Showalter ran his two beautiful CP steam locomotives on the former C&O Mountain subdivision. This stretch of track between Charlottesville and Clifton Forge, Va is still one of the most underestimated, intimidating, and demanding piece of railroad in the east. The C&O often double headed passenger trains with J3 and K4 type steam locomotives to even make the schedules on the Mountain. It passes over the highest point on the C&O mainline at North Mountain (elevation 2082) with many curves, bridges, and tunnels. N&W class J #611, in conjunction with the Buckingham Branch RR and the VMT, operated over this scenic piece of railroad in the month of October 2023. The introduction scene is one my father filmed in October 1993 of Jacks operation at the Hebron Church in Synder, VA followed by my shot of the 611 on the same hillside 30 years later. I am hoping the 611 can run this line more in the near future! Please like and subscribe if you enjoyed this video! Thank you!

I actually told someone in a comment that it would be an amazing throwback to 1993 if they did this again, but running from Charlottesville to Clifton Forge and back with a little longer train and seeing 611 battling the grades and blasting in and out of the tunnel along the route as well.

Some of the best video shots I have seen yet. Thanks for your work. We were riding on the Dome Car 21 October 2023. Such a great time and reflection of what is used to be like. I am a retired railroader myself. Started with Southern Railway and then with Norfolk Southern when they merged with N&W. Later worked for the Association of American Railroads (AAR) so I value this history documentation very much. Thank you so much for the excellent captures of these trains!!

Awesome video! Hopefully next year they could expand doing longer excursions between Clifton Forge and Richmond and would be nice to recreate the Charlottesville / Clifton Forge excursions Jack Showalter did.

This is probably the best thing vmt has done since the new policies for mainline excursions became a thing in 2018. And I agree, as I think there’s a chance 611 will be back on the Buckingham Branch in the future seeing how this is the closest 611 has to doing mainline trips again. And ngl, I’d love to attend one myself if they do indeed continue.

They’re planning on building an engine house and turntable in goshen, so yes, if all goes well, this will be 611’s stomping grounds for years to come.
