The Insane History of Carnage

- Spider-Man has put his life at risk facing off against a ton of villains throughout his history, such as Venom-- an alien symbiote that bonded itself to Eddie Brock-- as well as other highly dangerous and deadly villains like the Green Goblin and Doctor Octopus. However, Spider-Man hasn't faced anyone as deadly as Carnage, Venom's symbiote offspring which bonded to serial killer Cletus Kasady. Seemingly invincible, Carnage has almost killed Spider-Man on numerous occasions, with his body count in the hundreds of thousands. Carnage has unleashed an eldritch god, almost killed Spider-Man and Venom numerous times, received his own live-action movie, Venom: Let There Be Carnage, appeared in a Fortnite Battle Pass, and even achieved literal godhood. Today, in this long-form documentary-style video essay, we're doing a deep dive into the entire history of Carnage, Spider-Man's most insane villain.

"Carnage, his wife, and his dog are fighting the Demogoblin," was a non sequitur that made me laugh really hard and is now and forever a line that lives rent free in my head.
For anyone curious about what happaned to Carnage since:
1. He went around and killed a ton of civillians who hate symbiotes in Extreme Carnage, but was stopped by a team up between Flash Thompson and several other symbiotes
And 2. He is currently going around from realm to realm and killing people in his own ongoing to restore his godlike powers
Actually, it was Cletus Cassidy *_himself_* that did the slaughter of all the literal xenophobe’s in the Extreme Carnage summer crossover event, as his conscienceness was still saved into the Symbiote Codex following the events of The King in Black.
The Carnage that is trying to re-attain Godhood is the actual Carnage Symbiote, who personality-wise, is mostly just a copy of his usual host. Really this new Carnage series that stars the title Symbiote is demonstrating that the alien has a much more creative and inventive mind than the C- student Cletus.
@@Popcultureguy3000 Should have mentioned that the character in EC was Cleetus. Thanks for noticing my oversight!
How did he come back from being cut in half?
Didn't Carnage get dead during the King in Black run?
@@8Woody7 No. Carnage did not die during that run
I am so surprised that the Carnage hacking into the laptop in Let There Be Carnage actually happened. That is absolutely insane
I mean he did kill someone through the phoneline.
"actually happened" hehe, comic book reality
I honestly didn't know how to react. On one hand it waa hilariously dumb and funny, but then again it seemed just too stupid.
comic book rules are the best bc of random funny silly stuff like this
That’s the 90s for you, weird, but enjoyable as hell
“ carnage has a gun” has to be my favourite line
"Spiderman has a gun"
If I had a dollar for every time someone decided to deal with Carnage “once and for all” I would be rich
Carnage is quite literally a slasher villain; he’s a deranged serial killer, has killed many people creatively, and he just keeps coming back after he’s assumed to have perished once and for all.
If I had a dollar for every time they didn't keep the villain dead because people like the character, I could out-buy the Disney Company
@@redjirachi1 To be fair, at least the MCU aren’t afraid to permanently kill off their characters, but that’s an entirely different continuity from the comics, despite how much they want their audiences to believe that their movies take place in Earth-616.
@@FookMi69well, what with all the rumors about Marvel wanting to revive both Iron Man and Black Widow for the MCU, this comment has aged… a bit less gracefully than I would’ve liked
@@KeDe1606 Oh yeah.. Those are awful choices too. Bringing back Tony would just make Endgame’s ending feel much less impactful
My favorite part is Spiderman agonizing over whether or not just killing Carnage would be the right thing to do for pretty much the entire first arc, and then Kasady's THERAPIST making the decision to light her patient on fire like...right away. Where's her comic at?
I swear, I always hate how much heroes stick to that 'no killing' shit. They'll let the most irredeemably evil villains live, the villain kills a toooon of innocents and the heroes immediately are like "Bro... I didn't know this mass murdering supervillain would murder more people..."
Props to the therapist, she's probably the best hero of the entire Marvel database.
@@lockerbuddy2039yeah that’s why I like anime. They have that rule but they’re not so comically unrealistic about it.
@@lockerbuddy2039 None of Marvel's superheroes have a no-kill rule. They will kill if forced to. For DC though it's a slightly different story, with Superman, Batman, the Flash, and Black Canary holding strict no-kill rules.
@@centricthemedic1517 Spider-man has really strict no-kill rule. He saved Norman several times. When J.J.J tried to shoot him, Spidey caught the bullet, and Norman had killed Flash. When Sin eater tried to kill Norman, Peter teamed up with Goblin. Spidey always tries to stop Wolverine from killing people and Logan actually stops.
Daredevil also has strict moral code, he is catholic
@@user-vs5gb7pt3h spidey only kills when the person is irredeemable. Every time he saves a villian not long after they turn good. It's like his spidey sense helps him know if someone can be redeemed.
I feel like the Carnage saga is yet another instance of not knowing when to stop with a character. It just goes on and on to the point where even a really cool character like Carnage can become dull.
It’s kinda a Batman who Laughs situation
Thaaaats comics for ya~
That is because Marvel is a low form of storytelling. It's WWE but in comic panels. It's all just simple entertainment for 12 year olds.
I imagine it's also a symptom of the passage of time marooning a character from his initial context. The further away we get from that Silence of the Lambs zeitgeist without evolving or reinterpreting Carnage, the duller his edge becomes.
At a certain point "guy who kills people because he's CrAzY!?1" gets old.
It doesnt help that carnage is stuck in a non adult series hes a serial killer and a sadist. Any adaption is better then the watered down version from venom let there be carnage
Carnage wanted a statue and free bird playing 24/7…..officially the coolest villain ever
He also wanted the statue to have a cape, he stressed that detail
@@TheLivelovelaugh165 also a confederate flag
Chad shit
@@WhiteKnuckleRide512 wait what 💀
@@ghristophermyers666 Yeah, Carnage is a republican in the comics. He himself wanted that statue specifically in the middle of "liberal, bleeding heart New York".
Venom in the beginning really reminds of the way he acted in the PS1 Spiderman game. His design was terrifying but he was also goofy.
Goofy venom is best venom. I love the way they potray him in both instances
Absolutely agree. Funny and scary.
"Surf the web, surf the web!"
-Venom
"spider- wuss , come out and play"
His design is cool. Not "terrifying."
You left out the most outrageous part of Deadpool vs Carnage:
Carnage's existential breakdown happens because Deadpool keeps finding him, no matter where he goes or who he decides to kill. Deadpool explains it's because they're both the same kind of crazy and Carnage just can't accept the idea that someone else is on his same mental wavelength.
Also, Deadpool bonds with four or five other symbiotes in the finale
i actually really enjoyed that, its just two crazy people duking it out crazy style
Deadpool is a gary stu creators pet for writers edgelord fantasy, so I don't really care if he does get the better of Carnage.
Isn't that also when Deadpool gives the symbiotes to a dog?
@@alucardsantradideus267It is
The thought of Carnage . . . well, spreading carnage while singing Free Bird is one of the funniest things ever
Marvel was not lying when they called that one arc "Maximum Carnage" because goddamn is it borderline chaos.
Also I love that Carnage was almost killed by _love_ , like he's a cartoon villain even by cartoon standards.
Contextualized as a timeline, I'm surprised Carnage was actually used as sparingly as he was. I thought he was this Uber powerful, nightmare villain from the nineties who got toned down over the years and became more of a different character's reoccurring villain, but I am pleased as punch to find out that even into the modern day, when Carnage makes an appearance, the wider Marvel Universe tends to take notice
God damn captain america shows up twice when this dude escapes, this dude is a threat
The fact that one of Marvel's edgiest antagonists (which is, y'know, saying a lot) solely cares for a stuffed bear named "binky" is kind of hilarious.
And also extra terrifying.
Bane also does the same thing in DC
Carnage’s design has declined so hard since the 90’s. He has essentially looked like a slippery wet fish alien for the last 20+ years
He’s looked like shit design wise for the last 20 plus years. In absolute Carnage he looked amazing tho
in my opinion, the red should look like guts, since he is so blood thirsty.
The lack of black really kills it.
Yeah, all except his demonic looking form in absolute carnage
Idk, Dark and Devil Carnage were actually great designs. With the exposed spine highlighting how dead Cletus is.
Also, in regards to your metaphor for his design, I guess thats why he bonded with a fish
A few things that you missed in the video:
There's a 3 issue series called "Carnage: Black, White, and Blood" where a bunch of artists do their own short carnage stories. There's one where carnage makes a guy go insane and kill himself from the threat of Cletus Cassidy, there's one where a bullied young boy is talked to by Carnage, slowly convincing him to kill. And there's one where Carnage is a pirate.
Also, carnage is a boss/level in Spiderman Shattered dimensions.
Aslo they didnt mention ANY of the Absolute Carnage Immortal Hulk run.
Peter saying "What's with the WE" when being FORCED to work with Venom and Black Cat is hilarious😂
I love how venom went from “I’m going to cause havoc and kill people!” to “Only people like pedos and animal abusers deserve death, but I’ll scare every robber half to death.”
Bet’ah 😂 Bri’ish
I hate that they made him an anti-hero. Venom should be a hulk-like bad guy that eats people or drains people with this tendrils in a gory way. Honestly i don't like the whole symbiote mythology, i think they took things way too far. made it all goofy.
@@John-X The Venom you want is the one from Ultimate Spider-Man
@@yancgc5098 i don't like the ultimates universe tho.
@John-X I'm pretty sure Venom was like that for a long time, be was only ever a mindless carnivore in the Ultimate universe.
You know he’s bad when he’s the villain’s villain.
"Nevermind, he's alive" - this video in a nutshell
Bruh carnage made the most calmest "yeah" while being double teamed at 6:41
Best thing is that the writers had a habit of reusing Carnage without addressing his previous appearance leading to a lot of instances where he's supposed to be dead as a doornail but still somehow shows up to work without explanation.
At one point, Silver Surfer imprisons him in a material that he explicitly says nothing can get out of and Carnage spontaneously continues to appear without referencing it.
I don't think any other character does that quite like he does but it is unintentionally funny.
Its pretty obvious most writers hate the character and tries to kill him off in a way he couldnt come back from. The Silver Surfer and Sentry encounters leads me to believe this
Man, this whole rollercoaster just made me remember how much of a fever dream the 90's really where
*Never change 90's... Never change...*
I think dark carnage is more weakened to the third rail is because he is bonded with a symbiote dragon and these more ancient version of the species are more connected to Knull who as a god of darkness his weakness is light.
Modern symbiote that's stray from Knull's darkness like toxin has shown more resistance to fire and venom can absorb and shoot electricity like a lightning bender.
I always saw it as since the symbiotes spawned from Venom who took Spidey's abilities which included durability and Regen. Each one is more durable and has better regenerative ability
@@no.1spidey-fan182 I agree but spiderman isn't the sole reason. The symbiote are already tough on their own venom is somewhat of a champion, before it met Parker it bonded with multiple probably stronger hosts, inherited some power from its forefathers and if it's still canon venom is generation 998 making it super strong from birth. Also klytar become stronger the older they live and venom is old.
Dark Carnage being part dragon makes him weak against lightning damage. Spidey and Venom should've used Gold Pine Resin
@@nb2044they must of sprinkled some on their rail track weapon
@@nb2044 Or infuse his symbiote with a lightning gem.
It’s obvious how the writers of spider man unlimited didn’t know carnage existed considering they thought he was venom’s brother and made him team up with venom
You know, there’s a reason symbiote are my favorite villian types, there is actually no sugarcoating with these things. The lack of subtlety and flexibility both literally and narratively, most symbiote and symbiote storylines break down into what if venom but _____. Just finding the most wacky scenarios for symbiotes, fusing them with every character ever, it’s so damn fun. Carnage is just venom but more evil, so it’s way way more fun
There's a comic I have around my house somewhere called something like "into the venomverse" where its a bunch of alternate stories on things like "what if deadpool/wolverine/gwenpool/ghost rider had the venom suit. Its quite cool and I think you would enjoy it
Carnage has always been my favourite Spider-Man villain, and I think this video did him a great justice. Thanks!
When I read the Maximum Carnage line, I was really happy Morbius appeared in the comic as a team member. Always liked when morbius interacts with other spider-man characters
morb
Morbin' Morb Morb.
Morbin time.
Oh hello my fellow Morbheads!
"intriguing" -morbius
that character will forever be ruined by the movie, Marvel can never use him again lmao
The power of the Third Rail is unquantifiable. It surpasses that of The Living Tribunal and rivals that of The One Above All. The very mention of the Third Rail sends shivers down the spines of eldritch gods, who can only cower helplessly if they ever have the misfortune of crossing paths with the unholy rail. The Third Rail is eternal. The Third Rail is.
The fact that you never mentioned that Carnage was one of the main antagonists of the first ever crossover between Spider-Man and Batman should be considered heresy. He legit disgusts the Joker and the comic opens with Batman having a nightmare about Carnage killing his parents.
Carnage is dangerous enough to give BATMAN nightmares and make the JOKER disgusted. Let that sink in.
I just love venom in maximum carnage, he's literally the definition of your brain when you grab a knife telling you to kill everyone
"carnage finds a random baby, and throws him out the window" why did I laugh so much-
57:47 Watching Carnage doing Fortnite dances super fast while you talk about the painful reality that one cannot get the skin anymore is the funniest thing I’ve seen today. It feels like the red abomination is mocking you through the screen that you can’t have the skin.
19:09 "he dies.... no he doesn't" I CANTTTT-
He's been through a lot we got...
*LEGO CARNAGE*
The FIRST Carnage story was probably his best! I used to really love Carnage, but I think that writers have lost their way with Cassidy. They just do the same old, same old with him. Thanks for doing this , though. It brought back some old (And fond.) memories .
Facts Absolute Carnage was just a mixture of Maximum Carnage, Carnage 2016 where he gets demon powers and Carnage USA when he takes over a town. Thats what happens when you MILK a character...you eventually run out of story to write
@@no.1spidey-fan182 yeah, except it was much better written, had bigger, yet more personal stakes, evolved the characters and was just a joy to read. I don't understand your "criticism".
To be fair, he isn’t exactly a deep character with complex motives. There isn’t much else you can do with a character that just wants to kill and nothing else.
A Carnage story lives and dies by how good the other characters are written similar to what Drmantistobboganmd said.
@@Dr._Mantis_Toboggan_Md. My main point is that that doesn't change the fact that it was repetitive and STALE. Also the heroes had to be DUMBED down for Carnage to succeed😂 and Scorn character ASSASINATION.
This man Carnage has taken over a city like 4 times at this point...and they have ZERO countermeasures...yh...sure💀. Not even SPIDERMAN? Or the GOVERNMENT? Carnage is a HULK LEVEL THREAT but he juat gets a PASS!!!!??? Yh aight. Also The fact that spiderman was treated as a NOTHING character in a story that wouldn't exist without him
It had nice spectacle but underneath that the heroes were potrayed horribly, random thrown in plot points with symbiotes, like the codex. Same thing with King In Black...but to a much WORSE extent.
And seriously...wings? are a big achievment for symbiotes, WINGS!?...literally any symbiote host with a BRAIN should be able to make wings since one of their MAIN abilities is SHAPE...SHIFTING...😭🤦♂️
Dont get me wrong I enjoyed the events Absolute Carnage more so but the art CARRIED both of these events🤷♂️
@@Wiki1184 so why not just STOP using his character. It got so BLAND they now have Carnage dimension hopping and stealing powers on a trip through ASGARD😭🤦♂️. Thats not unique...thats just SAD at this point
The art in Maxminum Carnage is AMAZING. It aged so well💯
Something about Carnage having a gun is amazing and it cracks me up
I feel like we need a green goblin history video next
For being spider-mans worst enemy, that guy has a pretty scrambled timeline and I think a video to help keep track of it all would be neat
17:22 I like this part where Cap America randomly showed up and said "It's Cappin' Time" and proceeded to cap all over the trails of Carnage
27:16 IT'S CARNAGE TIME!
monkey see monkey do

That Maximum Carnage game was a ballbuster. That and Comix Zone had me stuck for weeks as a kid.
I know comic histories tend to get wild but it's just so hilarious hearing the shit Carnage has gone trough. He was in prison, then not, he was big, tiny, legless, got his legs back, he's been killed - well actually not. Guy can't catch a break but I think he might actually like it this way.
Love it when A Superhero and a Supervillain Team up
Like Batman and the Joker
Always sends chills and a huge grin on my face
The idea of carnage’s memorial playing freebird on blast 24/7 is hilarious and amazing. I think car accidents would rise nearby though.
The iconic status of Carnage makes the character suffer from success. He's an awesome villain and always poses a serious threat but you gotta do away with the villain, and that means he'll keep making comebacks, no matter how unreasonable. But that's superhero comics for you, nothing new under the sun. Still, I would love to see more of good boy Carnage, I imagine it would be much like Deadpool in Spider-Man and Deadpool, where Wade struggles but legit wants to be a good guy and do the hero stuff like the big names. Shit, imagine the banter of the Venom and Carnage symbiote bickering while Eddie tries to teach Cletus how not to be a complete psycho. Missed oportunities
You just got Heisenberg's Respect
Carnage is BY FAR my favorite villain in Spiderman! Venom is cool, Green Goblin is also cool, but Carnage is just pure chaos. So good and I'm glad they teased him in the most recent game.
Ok, so I just have to assume Human Torch really wanted to go to the beach because he bailed on the part where he could have been most useful.
Carnage is the Joker version of Spider-Man
Seeing how similar let there be carnage is to maximum carnage I’m sad we never got Venom teaming up with Morbius like in that story.
Carnage is definitely my favorite comic villain of all time, I love his just unbridled insanity and chaos, Cletus Kasady is a very interesting character and carnage just amplifies him. I want them to do more with him though, mostly exploring Kasady.
Criminally underrated channel! Definitely subbed. Laughed out loud on the delivery of "Carnage finds a baby.... and throws it out a window."
Genuinely great video, a proper rundown of a character that's not either 15 minutes of stating the obvious or overly focused on one version/run.
Sean Voicing carnage was a damm surprise to think he could go from Goku to Carnage is wild
Love when a channel just pops up, drops an hour long banger, then does it again
I wouldn't say Carnage is the most dangerous villain. The one with the biggest body count maybe, but in terms of who is more dangerous Doctor Octopus attempted to kill off the entire planet Earth at least once.
That and considering that Norman Osborn happened to get in control of the U.S. armed forces and invade Asgard I'm guessing he has Carnage beat there too.
Carnage became a dark god that summoned knull and brought the end of the 616 universe 💀💀💀
Carnage is a universal threat now.

I actually own the Fortnite Carnage skin! It’s very detailed, an odd mesh of mainly his Let There Be Carnage design but also aspects of the comics, like his surrounding cosmetics (he has a glider called the Dark Symbiote and there’s lots of his quotes in descriptions) and the holes in his legs, because, well, he didn’t have his legs. It’s meant to be 616 Carnage for sure though, lots of the Fortnite Marvel characters are meant to be the main 616 versions
Just under 2,000 subscribers from two videos? That's very impressive. I haven't read much Marvel, let alone Spider-Man, so this was a really interesting and cool video to watch. Must've taken forever to edit all this. Thank you for your hard work in making these videos.

I’m not sure where you went, but I really love your videos. I hope to see more soon!
Hey, thanks for this. Not something I would have thought to look for, but I really enjoyed this video.
liked for being a good video, subscribed for the battle network reference
7:06 Dumb question? And it's a question I ask all the time because New York but WHY DOESN'T SPIDEY ASK THE HUMAN TOURCH TO HELP?! I thought fire was Carnage's weakness!? And the Human Tourch lives in New York right? WHY ISN'T HE HELPING?! I was watching the 6 forgotten warriors episodes last night and a plot hole I couldn't shake from my brain was "WHY AREN'T THE OTHER HEROES HELPING AT THE UN?! WE'VE MET SO MANY IN THE COURSE OF THIS SERIES! Shouldn't the Punisher at the very least be there!?"
Awesome! I’d love to see an Electro or Green Goblin video next
22:07 “Then his therapist sets him on FIRE”this is the most hilarious sentence I’ve ever heard
Toxin was SOOO DOPE and had SO MUCH POTENTIAL. If theres ONE THING I DESPISED about marvel its how they treated the symbiotes spawns. Many symbiotes who were geneuinely GOOD people were MURDERED for the sake of Eddie and Cletus' development
1.Toxin was offscreened by God Damn BLACKHEART of all the villains cause no one else would've been able to beat him
2.Scorn MURDERED both literally and in terms of her characterization. She was Tech PLUS symbiote...SO MUCH POTENTIAL😭🤦♂️
3.Hybrid was killed in cold blood for Eddie's "character development"...that was RETCONNED so they could throw him back eith Venom for the 2018 movie even though he HATED symbiotes. So he got offed for ZERO reason and the symbiotes that comprised him have just been thrown all over the place. Sidebar:Hell I actually rewrote the last act of Venom(2018) to include Hybrid since they can't use Spidey
4. Scream was also killed and now she's on Mania but as...Silence(shpuldve been called Whisper but thats just me)
5. Chemo Sym(can't remember his name but hes Venom latest spawn) is just...WEIRD. its like the writers STILL have ZRRO idea how to write the other symbiotes
All in all marvel has really NO IDEA what to do with the vast world of symbiotes they have
Toxin is back now, and "chemo symbiote" is named Sleeper.
Nice vid
Great video my man. Keep going and I believe you'll hit 50k before the year ends
"cool, bank robbers time to stop th-- carnage has a gun....." LOL i freaking hollered
5:58 me the moment I get a single compliment from another fellow man
I’m glad carnage is getting more respect as he was my favourite back in the day! I low-key wish the venom sequel did him a bit better, but can’t complain bc this video is basically a film that reinforces my opinion
