  • With a stunningly powerful voice and an onstage presence to match, it’s not an overstatement to say that Freddie Mercury was one of the greatest rock frontmen of all time. But behind the scenes, Mercury’s life was wildly different than what fans saw. From secret pain and heartache to controversy to the jaw-dropping tragedy of his untimely death, Mercury’s story isn’t for the faint of heart.

Freddie knew that it would be all about him and his disease. He knew that his loved ones would be hounded 24/7. He didnt want them to bear his burden, or pay the price for his mistakes, so he remained silent out of love.

I remember so clearly when he passed. I was driving to work and it was announced on the radio, it's the first and last time that I had a visceral response to a celebrities death. I grew up listening to Queen, and I still love that band. I remember watching the video “I Want To Break Free” with my mom, and we both knew that Freddie Mercury swung both ways. I know it’s a harsh way of saying it, but that was the language back then.
I watched Live Aid, and I watched Queen perform. Freddie had the crowd singing along when they performed “Radio Ga-Ga,” which was magical! It was, still is, the most watched charity concert. Right before Live Aid, many British musicians came together to perform as Band-Aid, and the song “Do They Know It’s Christmas Time (Feed The World)” is STILL played 39 years after its release. To me, it’s not Christmas unless that song is played. I’m sorry, but I DON’T care too much for the updated version. Maybe it’s because I love the original version more than anything played on the radio.
I remember watching Queen’s song “These Are The Days Of Our Lives,” and I remember thinking that something was truly wrong with Freddie’s appearance. He looked gaunt, and tired. Soon after, he passed away from AIDS. It definitely was a sad time for music. Did I cry? You betcha.
During the late 60s throughout the 80s, AIDS/HIV was known as the “gay cancer,” and nobody knew how it began, but boy oh boy, did the rumors began. I remember hearing that HIV/AIDS started with someone having sex with a monkey infected with the disease, then it was the “gay disease,” which turned into that anyone could get it. Ryan White was the first person to be infected with HIV by a blood transfusion, and he, along with his family, fought valiantly for him to stay in school, but there was way too much stigma associated with HIV that he was denied to go back to school.
My sister had a young black gay friend, who was diagnosed with having HIV, and he sat us down and educated us about HIV. He told us that what was being reported by the news was to create fear and hatred for the LGB community, and he told us that we had no fear of being infected with HIV/AIDS by hugging, kissing on the lips, using the same toilet, or the other fear tactics used back then. He told us (my sister, my mom and myself) that HIV/AIDS was a disease from unprotected sex, intravenous drug use, and blood transfusions (until there was a more effective way to test blood for HIV/AIDS).
I watched a documentary about Freddie Mercury, and his bandmates think that he could have been infected with AIDS when he was in Germany. How he was infected, I don’t think anyone would ever know.
The world lost a phenomenal singer, song writer and performer the day that Freddie Mercury died. Too many lives have been lost because of this disease, and I hope, like the Bubonic Plague, can be eradicated from the planet. We lost too many wonderful and talented musicians, actors/actresses, and models from this disease.
RIP to the great Freddie Mercury, and all those who lost their lives because of HIV/AIDS!!

Officials in San Francisco, the Gay Bay, tried to shut down the bath houses where gay men literally would stick their bares asses up against a hole in the wall and a guy on the other side would screw them so people were trying to save them. Sorry to be so blunt but these men, including Freddie took no precautions at a time when they did know what was going on and they didn't care. Even seeing the gay men around drop like flies did nothing to deter them. Even in 2024, we have commercials with gay men telling us they're on a drug that makes their HIV undetectable during sex. Yes, we lost Freddie but think of the men that Freddie infected along the way.

It might be hard for this generation to understand why he didn't speak out about his illness. Back in the '80's and early '90's it would be hard to do that. There was such a bad stigma attached to it, a lot of fear and shame but mostly ignorance by the general public. The only time that information would need to be shared is if the person had a romantic interest in someone. The spread of the disease often involved such encounters. At first no one was allowed to ask but eventually it became the law in many places to inform a new partner prior to intimacy, as it is not right to endanger someone else.

I never was aware of anyone suddenly turning on Freddie due to his sex life, I thought it was obcious even when I was very young and didn't care, why should I? I figured out Rob Halford early on and most fans didn't care. It seems like only a few key people did care, giving the rest of us Americans a bad name. It's so messed up because who cares if you lose biggoted fans? They're like fake friends. I saw Queen look at a packed house with my own two eyes, it's just hard to reckon. He was 45 years old, when he loosed his mortal coil.
I remember him standing on stage with a massive Ruby Ring, and announcing to the Live Crowd, that " Satan gave me this, as a gift.".....and the crowd went wild and cheered.
Freddie turned to his fellow band members, with a smile and said to them,
    "They think I'm joking......hah-hah."
THAT'S when I realized...... there's much more to Freddie than meets the average eye.
    ......draw your own conclusions.
    I loved his music.
    Great frontman.
    Spiritually, very dark.

You only get ahead with promoters by selling your soul. Notice the crossed arm Osiris pose on the second album. In your face, loud and clear message to those with eyes to see. His black and white illuminati birthday party. Success in the music industry is bought. And it costs you your soul.

@lizvickers7156 Loosed was in the Oxford English Dictionary from the 1500s on, and was used in The Battle Hymn of the Republic.

If you weren’t even born back then you won’t have any idea of the stigma of even being gay let alone having HIV. You just needed to be there.

Tragic? This video is a tragic and by not only by poaching the rarely-factual Bohemian Rhapsody cartoon. In example in Zanzibar, Freddie started his own band as a very popular kid. Upon arriving in "drab" England, Freddie. to quote his mother was "very excited!". Fred's parents always supported him. Some easy research may have helped this bucket of urine.
