Development of the CZ Skorpion from Laugo Prototype to Evo3A1

The CZ Skorpion grew out of a Czech Army request for a new 9x19mm SMG as the newly formed Czech Republic pivoted to a Western orientation in the 1990s. The CZ factory took a look at what it already had that might be suitable, and did in fact revisit the vz.61 Skorpion design in 9x19mm (originally designated vz.68). This was the Skorpion Evo2, and it was actually a pretty user-friendly gun, but much too expensive for mass production in the 90s.
As this reality became clear, CZ began talking to Ján Lučanský of Laugo Arms; he had designed a simple blowback design that was much more suited to the Czech Army request. CZ acquired the design and hired Lučanský and he finished refining the gun into the Evo3. This was followed by an improved Evo3A1 with a number of minor improvements.
Today, we are going through this development process starting with one of Lučanský's original prototypes and moving all the way through the Evo3A1.

"Why not build a submachine gun? Seems like an excellent idea."
I wish I had the skills and legal circumstances for this phrase to be part of my life.
With 3d printing you can
You can 3D print most of an Evo 3, and for like $500 you can get everything you need to build a semi auto luty. Follow your dreams my friend.
I know how you feel. Watching all these guns videos one can get ideas of your own. I have a couple myself that I would love to see working.
@@SniperSnake50BMG to legally manufacture your own machine gun?
Where the hell do you live that that's all you need to do?

I never knew that the Laugo Alien and the CZ Scorpion Evo 3 were designed by the same guy. The firearms world seems to be really small with many guns by a few designers.
When you're a talented firearms engineer, your work tends to be sought-after and well-funded.
They actually designed a 40 cal and 45 acp.. but cz didn’t want those desgins
Overall, that's largely true of most product markets. Firearms are only just recently starting to catch up to the "upgrade" rate of things like cell phones (gotta get a new one every year! 🙄)
Yeah, what ever happened to the Alien that Ian had?
The Laugo Alien is a remarkable bit of design.
As a Czech, I perceive it as my patriotic duty not to skip commercials on videos about my homeland or our products. 🇨🇿🍻🇺🇸
My grandpa was Czech but i never lived there, so I think I'm morally allowed to skip the ads as long as i buy the guns heheh
@@andyjones9519 That sounds like a good deal.
🤗But as a proud Slovak, I am glad that the purchased Slovak prototypes give the Czechs pride.
@@BELBOG666 🇨🇿🤝♥️🍻🇸🇰

The SMG looks awesome. Even though it's been out for a few years, it looks like it came straight out of a sci-fi film set.
Probably because hollywood used it in sci-fi movies
@@tedarcher9120 but they used it due to it looking futuristic, like the p90
I guess im in the minority here but i dont really like the look of it.
@@Likexner I personally much prefer the Carbine version with a smoother hand guard. Cz to me seems to always have pretty unique looking weapons with something cool and something strange.
@@Likexner Most successful firearms are function over beauty. Not that function can't be viewed as good looking. The 1903 Springfield was great for its era, lasted in the Corps well into the early battles of WWII. Then when the US Army went to relieve the Marines on the 'Canal their Garands seemed to disappear. Curious how the Navy's decision makers were flanked by Green Grunts who knew what worked on the battlefield. The bonus of using the same caliber ammunition was the cherry on top of the sundae.
I'm glad CZ is so willing to let you range test so much of their stuff.
yes
I bet the CZ shooting videos lead directly to noticeable bumps in sales too.
@@ekscalybur They do a really good job illustrating how they aren't just "cheaply made derivative trash guns" like some people just kind of assume because of the part of the world they come from. Turns out they have a lot of extremely thoughtful and downright elegant mechanics to them, with a priority given toward serviceability.
@@BloPsy__ you know how fudds are, and fudd lore has a tendency to spread outside of fudd circles.
@Exarian I think CZ proved that decades ago with their handguns. What quality stigma is there about Czech production or any similar country? They are surrounded by Germany, Hungary, Austria, German, Serbia, Italy, Croatia, Switzerland..... If anything, this is a region of high quality and innovative firearms
This guy is an absolute legend, builds an SMG cuz he needs a hobby.
Mitch Wurbell would approve.
At the beginning of the Evo 3 build, there was a bet/argument with another person that it took a complex background
to produce subguns, which according to Jan, who is a veteran of the UN mission in the former Yugoslavia and who saw a number of Croatian subguns like Šokac being produced in small workshops, was not true, so he start build this.
That's a silly thing to think just from a point of understanding how pistols work and anyone who actually thought SMGs require anything fancy should feel like a total goober. It would have been so simple to make pistol-based SMGs. Like imagine if they took a pistol with a stationary barrel, made the barrel longer, put a stock on the frame, made the magazine a lot longer, and put in a giggle switch. Done. Or even just use a pistol and slap some foldy rifle parts on it and a giggle switch. We never needed a Grease Gun. We coulda had SMG modded 1911s.
@@notablediscomfort Not really, a Grease gun is cheaper than an unmodified M1911. Plus most machine pistols of that era aren't all that practical in full-auto, even with stock.
@@ng.tr.s.p.1254 I wouldn't say 1911 because the operating mechanism is more complex, but if someone with no background wanted to make a subgun in that era it would probably look something like a modified blowback pistol. That's still not a good SMG, but there's not very many design challenges between that and a simple blowback subgun.
Thank John browning for everything
Funny you mentioned out of battery safety. Due to the ATF and their infinite wisdom, a part in the fcg had to be removed for US import and that part was basically an out of batter safety so US scorpions have a very slight tendency to fire out of battery.
Let be fair US gun laws are a complete crapshow because of how much writing aroudn the 2nd amendment they have to do.
They shouldn't be "writing around" it in the first place. It was written exactly as intended, and any "law" that seeks to put limitations in place is unconstitutional by definition.
That's a myth. If you look at the bolt and the trigger assembly (even on the semi-auto only variant), you will see that there is a firing pin block in the bolt and a lever in the trigger assembly. This, in-theory, should prevent the firing pin from striking the primer when the bolt is out of battery.
However, in practice, OOB detonations may still occur because the factory firing pin block ocassionally gets stuck in the "up" position, unlocking the firing pin even when the bolt is out of battery. If you search online (especially Reddit), you will find that someone manufactured a titanium firing pin block which alleviates this issue. IIRC, CZ is also offering firing pin block replacements for bolts that have this issue, due to the factory firing pin blocks being slightly out of spec.
Didn't you get the memo? Biden renamed it, it's now the AFT.
Gee thanks ATF.
I think this is one of the coolest PCC designs. Definitely glad I own one.
Picking up mine from the FFL today!
@@TheJudoJoker You'll enjoy it 100%
Same! It's awesome. Tbh, I bought it just for the fun of modifying it because of how cheap and easy they are to work on.
Bought my ODG back a few months ago for $700, and probably have 50% more into it in aftermarket parts lol. Some functional enhancements (esp. trigger mods), some aesthetic, but it's so fun to tinker with.
@@sentinel7122 Yup, good guns for sure. You really can't beat the included factory sights on it.
@@TheJudoJoker Its an amazing gun stupid accurate but get a few aftermarket parts. Change the saftey levers they dig into your hand, get a larger steel charging handle so if u HK slap it the charging handle won't come off, and get a trigger lighting kit. Really smart move from Česká zbrojovka Uherský Brod to invite Gun Jesus over. 🇨🇿🇨🇿🇨🇿
Especially when the Evo 3 is for sale in the US civilian market
I shot a semi automatic version of EVO 3 few weeks ago. I hadn't shot anything since my military service 10 years ago but managed to get a good group with my first mag. I've decided to join the local club and will look forward shooting more with this system. Also shot with CZ 75 pistol. I liked both.
I only just saw tis gun on 'The Hitmans Wifes Bodyguard' last night and was wondering what it was. I find it so strange that guns from early 2000s and even before can still look so damn modern and sci fi today. That looks so cool.
Literally the only thing I remember from that film is Salma Hayek in a spy catsuit. Not necessarily a bad thing.
@@AshleyPomeroy apparently Ryan Reynolds is in that film somewhere too.
I saw the gun in Morbius. They were used by some of the Ship Mercs that Morbius killed. Also saw the VHS-2 in it.
such a smart formula to these videos, the whiteboard of knowledge, at the range, manufacturer backstories and q&a sessions. Ian is such a well-learned individual and it amazes me that he can put out so much quality content as a historian.
Wow! CZ Skorpion is one of my favorite. And I can see how well I have increased my knowledge because of watching your content about CZ skorpion. I learned to love it because of your videos!
Ian i just wanted to say thank you sir for all of your hard work and knowledge........you are the MAN
The magnet that keeps the stock folded is brilliant! I love little details like that!
The laugo connection really just solidifies this as one heck of an interesting SMG. So much to learn about here!
This is amazing how use of plastic, or "polymer" materials made this guns so much better, accurate, and easy to handle and use in general. It just shows how much progress was made, compared to much earlier guns, especially older, full-metal models...
Very similar to the Extar EP9, an American designed and made PCC that is very light, very affordable and is is highly rated.
One of my all time favorite firearms purchase. It's great shooting , handy and fun as hell .
B&T's Grasshopper Mouse (GHM9) - a high-end competitor to the Scorpion - features a laser engraved image of a mouse eating a scorpion hidden inside the upper receiver.
@@ChristopherHallett B&T entry level is high end
@@ChristopherHallett They're going for north of $1500 for a blowback 9mm. That's high end.
That alone would make me not consider it. If their marketing division is that juvenile, and has reach all the way down in production, I can think of a laundry list of other concerns I already have with such a company.
@@andersjjensen The whole lineage of the GHM9 is basically a fun project by the owner to do a newer Sites Specter, so no marketing involvement (I don't even know if they have an American style marketing dept in the first place). It's not their main series, even if it's been surprisingly successful. They really don't give the slightest shit about this type of comment.
Loving this kind of factory features Ian.
I love the super tactical VZ68. It looks like a video game gun with all of the add ons bolted on.
2:49 gotta love Ian’s acting ❤
i like the prototype more than the finished build
it's practically sized, and so cute too!
Honestly, aesthetically, I like the prototype the most.
As a Evo 3 S1 owner, there is a newer civilian version. There is a S2 out that swapped the mag release to the bolt release and adds an AR style mag release with new mags that are not backwards compatible. The front handguard has also been changed to a mlok bottom.
I saw one of them at a gun store not to long ago. I'd imagine it was released as a way to "fix" some of the complaints the S1 had in ergonomics. In my opinion it's not really worth it. The stuff I didn't really care for on my S1 I replaced with pretty affordable aftermarket parts. There are a lot of customisable components for the S1 with great aftermarket support. Easily one of my favorite guns to take to the range and great for home defense.
God bless Czechia for giving Me this beautiful gun... and such a Loving Partner too
Love this channel. So much info to digest. Keep it up Ian.
My Scorpion is def my fav sub gun, cool to see how it evolved overtime. It's a beautiful looking space gun but simplistic and reliable as they come
You must not own a MP5 or UMP
@@bobsmith3196 MP5 is a dated design that shoots well but has less than ideal ergonomics.
The UMP is nothing spectacular. Same sort of thing as the scorpion. Polymer, Blowback. But far more expensive because Hype and Kompromise (H&K)

Wonderful presentation! Your attention to detail is amazing.
I was never quite fond of the look of the scorpion until I saw the carbine length version. Oh my. That long handguard is beautiful.
Another fantastic video, lots of interesting insights here. Thank you Ian, keep them coming!!
I’ve never clicked on a video so fast. I’ve been in love with this gun for years, and CZ is my brand for my special shooter hands. It’s ironic and humorous that the prototype Scorpion is exactly what everyone who owns a scorpion wants as far as ergonomics go. Sub 6” barrel, ar/standard style grip, speed holes for when your hand doesn’t work, and skeleton stock that allows to be fired whilst in the unopened position. If CZ were a savvy buisness they’d remake the new evo3+ design and push the prototype design in 2025. It’d curb the market so hard for pcc’s, cmmg would be shitting themselves.
absolutely agreed. I saw the prototype, and I wanted it.
Love my micro scorpion. Nabbed one in 2019 when they came with a brace and faux suppressor from the factory.
You always nail these cod guns. It’s the Cx-9 in modern warfare. You are my favorite gun guru

Wow, the Evo 3A1 is so cool! Now I want one!
I really like that magnet idea. It is so obvious a solution that you wonder why it wasn't thought up before.
Thank you.
Really like this design, especially the disassembly for some reason. Nice and simple I guess. Looking forwards to seeing you shoot this tomorrow!
What a beautiful SMG!
Anyone else with me thinking that the prototype looks almost more badass than the final product?
Great firearm, consistent 100yd rings with iron sights, I love mine.

So neat to see Ian take apart a gun I own. All be it the military version. But makes a cool comparison between the two mechanicly.

Thank you for this video. Very interesting!
The design is very thoughtful and elegant.
I got a evo back in 2020 and haven’t had a single problem with it, it’s also super easy to bump fire them
Ian is possibly the only person in the world who can go to any country, friend or foe, and be welcomed to display their weapons.
Not quite. I don't think Ian would be welcomed with open arms in Russia in these times. We don't want to see him in the news under the headline of "American spy apprehended".
That proof of concept model looks really good - would be great for close protection work
That prototype looks really cool.
That prototype looks awesome!
I have a Scorpion EVO 3 and also a HK MP5 (both are US semi auto versions) and I can say that while the roller delay MP5 is a little bit smoother, it’s not enough better to justify the $2000 difference in price between them. The Scorpion is a hell of a nice gun and a great value for the price.
the Czechs have a fine engineering tradition, and this appears to maintain it.
To be fair, the designer of this gun was Slovak.

How did I not know this existed???
I've never gone from not knowing a gun exists to needing one so quickly in my life.
its interesting that the modern iterations are more close to the original design with the compact form factor
I predict that tomorrow's video is going to feature a 'huge cheesy grin'... Ian's 'happy place' seems to be a CZ point-n-squirt and a box or several of minty fresh ammo. I still remember the .32 Skorpion range video, and the Evo 2 looked like a lot of fun too.
Well have I got news for you...
Really looking forward to seeing it shoot tomorrow! I've fallen in love with CZ over the course of your CZ series.
I admit I didn't respect CZ before I got my hands on one of their modern guns. I knew them as decent soviet bloc manufacturers but man was that a poor sentiment to hold. Theyre not quite as notorious as HK, Glock or SIG but their guns are on the same level or better in many cases.
Since coming around on CZ I've been in this sort of honeymoon period, abosrbing all things CZ and this ones going to be interesting.
Nothing CZ will ever be better than anything HK. CZ scorpions actually blow up.
In Europe, people are jokingly calling IPSC production division the "CZ cup" now because everybody is shooting some variant of CZ Shadow. But I've also heard about competitors slowly moving away from CZ again because their quality seems to be getting worse. Don't know if that's true, but I have some anecdotal evidence:
I have this 6" long-slide version of the CZ75 SP01 (it's all CZ parts and assembled by some German tuning shop). The SA trigger wasn't quite perfect and I gave it to a gunsmith for tuning. He just told me he can't do a lot because my trigger unit isn't quite that good, with too much play. If I wanted a perfect trigger I'd have to buy a whole new trigger unit. That kind of pissed me off because the gun was 1700 Euros.
@@bobsmith3196 I've put 4k plus rounds through mine. Hk is definitely better if you want to pay 5 times as much and never be able to get parts for your guns.
@@zachreed6476 if you want the best its gonna cost ya and i have no problem finding all the parts I need which is really only extractor springs and rollers cause hks just run and run.

Always been a fan of CZ firearms, Back in 1990 I brought back a pair of CZ-75 from Berlin. I put so many rounds thru those 2 pistols and never had any issues with performance. The paint job kept flaking off, front sites would fall out. But loved them until someone made an offer I couldn't refuse on them lol. Back then nobody imported them into the US.

It’s my 2nd favorite out of all my 9mm.
As far as I know, those LPA sights were essentially an off the shelf part slapped onto the early scorpions. I think you can still get them from LPA today...
I admire that little personal defence weapon sub machine gun or machine pistol which also can be called Skorpion Evo 1 of the first step evolution. To me, the size and the design of this weapon is very handle and convenient as it seen not that difficult to take out of the clothes or trousers big pocket or even take out of bag that one attach on to his or her body when one need it to defense oneself desperately.
I've been patiently waiting for this one video since your first upload from Uhersky Brod.
PS: "I just made a funny" is so entering my vocabulary from now on
