I had the honor of knowing and chatting with Barney, on occasion, from 1974 to the the late '80's. He tried to talk me out of buying a Gibson Kessel (I did and regretted it). He wouldn't go near one of these Kay's. He played, for the most part, one guitar his whole career... a Gibson ES-350 from about 1947. On our first meeting, during a Great Guitars Concert, he told me the whole story of that instrument. It had 6 different fret boards, each board was re-fretted 3 times. He hand wound the Charlie Christian pickup.
Remember, when you hear Julie London sing, 'Cry Me a River', that's Barney, comping in the background. Miss you, my friend.
II: not surprised to hear about an aversion to these guitars. He wasn’t shy about his preference of his 350 over any of his Gibson signature guitars.
But say your parents bought you one of these Kay’s …and still have it. It would be a mistake to part with it…IMO.
Why didn't Barney like this Kay? Was the neck not sized to his liking? It sounds nice to me, and I don't have any complaints of the aesthetics.
It just seems strange that Barney would endorse a guitar and then never play it. Before I endorsed anything, I would make sure it met my expectations...
@@mojostephen yeah but he did it I’m guessing for the getting his name out and money. Back in the day that’s more than understandable seeing how there was no internet and social media. Many times people like him with signature models never played them, just how trini Lopez had his own Gibson signature yet he played the Barney kessel model over his own
@@yestoES355 Back when signature guitars were much scarcer, then. You had the Gibson Les Paul, the Kay Barney Kessel, a Gibson Barney Kessel, and... Nothing from Mosrite _on a big scale_ until 1963. Then there was the Mosrite Ventures model, but it was called the Joe Maphis model first, around 1961` - 1963. Since Joe's signature model got pushed back, he later got a differently shaped model in 1966.
I would've been here sooner, but a Fender ad came up with Lemmo jamming with a jaguar
Our boy's getting into the big leagues.
He did another ad with fender?!
This is the guitar for Lemmo. He plays it great and doesn’t sound like everyone else.
.
Michael... you knocked it out of the park, with the Kay! You need that guitar....
The headstock, pick guard, and tail piece remind me of the badging on a 50s Cadillac and/or a Lincoln!
live forever doing the moondance
What a Beauty!!! I gotta check out Barney Kessel . Very warm and mellow tone.
Art Deco guitar kicking butt!
By 1956 Art Deco was retro
Never played any instruments but subscribed the channel just to hear Lemmo playing! He absolutely rocks!!!!
Great job!!!!!!!!!!
Awesome guitar.
Just brilliant
Very cool, vibey American made budget archtop.
Michael ( The Tone Monster) Lemmo does it again. He makes me want a guitar I had never heard of.
Well done sir!!
The Kay Tone Baby!
Loved the effect on that bridge pickup, and love when Lemmo does the blues!
Best you sounded yet, that kay krept into ur soul !
You should do an old Airline guitar
WOW! Finally something that's not a Fender or Gibson....
I know some people hate the looper. I love watching him build the layers. His timing, tone, phrasing, are ridiculous. Last Thursday with that Firebird 1 was about as good as you're gonna get.
this guitar something unlike anything ive ever seen and the tones are out of this world
That K really sounds amazing 😻 Lemmo I have to say it’s your playing 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻😍😊🌷🎸
Good job Michael.! That is a very fascinating old Kay guitar!
It's refreshing to hear from a player the caliber of Lemmo...."still learning how to play it and how to do it justice"....
Love these... Sounds great.
This one really hitting different
JaMmIN BroThEr!!! Sweet guitar and talented playing! One of my favorite GOTD episodes! Enjoyed!
Oh man that headstock and pick guard look like they could have come straight from an old Caddy. And it sounds decent too and not merely a kitschy novelty.
You killed it with that guitar. Nice guitar.
That headstock is beautiful.
Weird wacky ass Wednesdays are my favourite Wednesdays
Love the Gojira shirt.🤘
As a member of the Wrecking Crew Barney Kessel is on countless records from the 60s.
Not to mention one of greatest chord melody jazz artists who ever picked up an axe. He was a chord MONSTER!!
Played with T-Bone Walker too.
Cool looking peice
GOTD is always better when Lemmo is on an Oasis kick. Two Oasis tracks in one episode? Nice!
Back in the day the headstock was nicknamed "Kelvinator Headstock" because it looked like the handle of an old fridge, and everybody hated them cause of their non-traditional goofy look, in the 70s you could buy one of these dirt cheap; however I am glad Norm bought one and Michael is showing its potential.
Amazing sound, great style!!
That is beautiful
Nice guitar! Love it! Nice job Michael!
Fantastic playing. I wish you would do an instructional video on how to use a looper. You're one of the best I have seen using one.
These are cool guitars. I’ve got the 3 pickup speed demon in my shop for sale.. kay made some great guitars, and some garbage. These are great
Nice ❤
Lemmoooo, Dude, so High and strummin tunes...dam!!
Live Forever & Moondance renditions!
What a great sounding guitar!
Great musician very diverse
Saw you playing in the fender add for the new fender jag pretty badasss lemmo 🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
I would love to see Lemmo and Phil X jamming.
wow thankyou i needed that !
I dig the sound of Kleenex Box pickups.
Dirtied up, they get a P90 thing, but "nasally."
Luckily, there's two Kleenex boxes on the guitar! {]B^{D }
A couple of ideas . . .
Maccaferri Monday
Travis Bean Tuesday?
Teisco Tuesday?
Wandre Wednesday
Verythin Thursday ( a Hofner!)
Framus Friday
Yanuziello Yesterday?
Selmer Saturday
Sitar Sunday!
BAD ASS Lemo!
Why didn't Barney Kessel play these? They sound amazing!
Beautiful guitar, never heard of it
Barney Kessel was with the Wrecking Crew and played on countless records.
If you ever have a Kay Value Leader to sell on "Affordable Favorites," could Lemmo do a demo for it? I know they're not worth a whole lot, maybe the 3 pickup "K 1963" versions are worth as much as a Silvertone 1457, but still; they're not often thought of, and they have an interesting tone for slide.
Nice 😎
Mellow Lemmo Demmo
I'm trying to imagine Barney Kessel ripping out "Bang a Gong" riffs.
This guy does great reviews maybe should of mentioned Kleenex pickups but I apologize in advance for mentioning.
Damn that lick at 7:19 was nice
🎈
I'm not sure, but I think I remember reading that Barney never actually played this guitar, only Gibson's. But it's a great sounding guitar, and he should have played it if he didn't.
Yeah, BK played an old ES-150. He didn’t much like either his Kay or Gibson signature models. I’ve owned examples of each and think they’re both great. ☺️ Still have the Gibson but traded the Kay Kessel for a Kay Jazz 2 (still have it) and some cash.
Correction: Barney Kessel played an old ES-350. He replaced its original P90 pickup with a Charlie Christian.
@@davidkieltyka9 I think Clapton played a Jazz 2. Is that right?
@@davidkieltyka9 - it was an ES-350 from '47
@@zankyalbo2208 Right you are. I got the ES number wrong. 🤨
@@mickeyjohnson1137 Yeah, I think the Jazz 2 was his first electric guitar, or at least his first decent one.
How many playing styles does this guy have in his pocket?
I was not expecting that Live Forever by Oasis
Not to be that person but just an FYI that was Cigarettes and Alcohol by Oasis. It was a kick ass surprise though!
@@jessem5427 It was Live Forever for sure.
@@hartley9306 It was Wonderwall and we all know it!
I was hoping for some Charlie Brown Christmas music....
That's Bad Ass!
There he goes again. Mr Versatile = Michael Lemmo
Talk about your fat bottom girls , this gal has got back , Luv Moondance , one of my favorite songs , very warm almost EC woman tone but with some definite Chuck Berry tones in the bridge , luved it , well done Michael , nice to see something other than Fender or Gibson for a change , thanks guys.
Sounds like JJ Cale's guitar
2 edibles 3 do-overs don't zoom in on my eyes Jen !!!!
Swag
Is that Jen wheezing? o.o
Nothing wrong with a wacky guitar every now and then! Awesome job man! However! Gotta do a Maton!
Simple little man
@@urbaneaglerunningforpresid670 I may be simple to you but at least I'm not an eagle!
A good guitar for Sara's slide.
For what.?
How much is that guitar , Sounds like a million dollars
A little on the muddy side, but built like a tank.
I'm a bit torn on ths one. Love the tones, hate the look, headstock especially. Great demmo Lemmo, but even though I love the sounds, I won't be selling a kidney for this one. BTW in my youth (soo far back) Kay guitars were 'El Cheapo' nasties in the UK.
Love Kay guitars but those strings look horribly off center.
always nice people here.
but always too much..
way too much..reverb💥
Yes,I am the thumbsdown......he needs to be bringing us new music, not working at a music store......wasted talent
that doesn't deserve a thumbs down
He likes it too much to like it, LOL! That's okay, YT's algorithms count them the same as thumbs up.
I'm the thumbs down on your comment.. No bad vibes just liked the irony. Have a great Chritmas.
@@kamranfeiz8450 no it does not
I mean a) most music store employees are talented musicians or they wouldn't be qualified to work there and b) every day Lemmo makes all of our days a little brighter with his playing and he's made a name for himself doing it. Obviously we all want him to have the career that he deserves but I don't believe he's wasting his talents at all. Every day he plays to a guaranteed audience who enjoy his playing and he gets paid for doing it; that makes him a professional musician
