- Started with a hand launch and finished with a spiral dive! But Mike Roach knows how to design an rc aeroplane, a nice lump of grass helped though! A couple of mods and she'll be back for another try, cheers.

It's not often you get a second chance after a crash but lady luck was on my side 🤔👍
I think that it looked really good flying. You did a good job on it
Still an amazing plane, nice.
@@truenaturestormers2525 Cheers 009!
@@CliffHarveyRCPlanes Oh yaaa, that was so sweet my man.
You see the lucky lanyard saved the plane after a spiral landing 😊. She looks fantastic Cliff, look forward to see a nice calm day flight. 🫡
Thanks Chris, what would I do without it 😁👍
Great looking airplane, love the Sopwith triplane.Looking forward to seeing this fly again. Thanks and cheers Cliff.
Many thanks Don, she's top of my list 👍😁
You really like your shot of adrenalin! Maiden flight of such a nice plane in gusty weather .... Overall was good, the landing seemed very soft and controlled, and surviving the crash is a testament to great build quality!
Flying in gusty weather is just my way of adding some drama to the flight Andrew! Thanks for noticing the soft landing.
"Got away with it" a well used phrase in aeromodelling 😂😂. Tripe must have been well built nonetheless. I always "cheat" with rudder mix on mine and scramble to find the switch if i don't 😊. Well done again Clifff!
Thanks Jim, I find if the rudder isn't mixed in I end up altering the throttle as well! It's mixed now so that's one less thing to consider 🤔👍
Brilliant Cliff!! 👌💪
Thanks Charlie, it's going to get better 🙂👍
Beautiful airplane, Cliff. It flew quite well.
Hi Richard, thanks, the next flights should be better 👍
Cliff that is a beautiful plane. Looks like a bit of a tense maiden. That said I see what you're seeing. That will be a fantastic flyer once you have her all sorted and set up.
Thanks Adam, I'm just being patient for all the 'planets' to line up before my next attempt 🤔🙂👍
Awesome job!
Thank you Dave! Cheers!
Looks great! Just a bit of trimming, of course.
Sometimes they fly straight off the board Guy sometimes they don't 🙂👍
Cliff great flying for a tricky tripehound. I have always preferred world war 1 aircraft over modern aircraft. There is something about monoplanes biplanes and triplanes from 1914-1918 that hold my attention. I wish that I had your build skills as when I build something some how the wing is warped or something is out of kilter somewhere. Doesn't help that I have nerve damage in my right arm that sometimes leads to a tremor in my right hand. take care and fly well and fly safe.
Thanks, the more wings the greater the room for errors, I have a lifetime of experience to draw on but sometimes things aren't as they were, thanks for watching 🙂👍
Nicely done. Check for a slight warp in one or more wings for that leftward tendency.
Will do, thanks 👍
lovley cliff :)
Thanks 👍
"Winds light to variable" - Eccles
I'd prefer no wind though 🤔👍
Great looking model.
I would be too nervous to fly it
She's been waiting for a few weeks now Stepheny, I had to give her a go before she became a subject for a 'dusting off' video 🤔👍
That is one sharp looking model Cliff
Thanks David...sharp and strong 🙂👍
Mix some right rudder in with throttle, that’ll help you appreciate what the wing is doing in flight without having to deal with torque. Fly in a straight line and go from idle to max power, and if she yaws, nix more rudder in until she keeps on straight regardless of what power you set.
Then fly it in an straight line and use your ailerons to see if you need to mix rudder in to cancel adverse yaw. When in a spin or a spiral dive. Using rudder to recover is much better than ailerons, which actually make matters worse. Nice model. Enjoy your flying
Thanks for the tips Paul 🤔👍
Cliff fantastic maiden, ailerons are for decorations rudder is for turning. I was thinking maybe a little bit more nose weight? Jeff in LA USA
I like that Jeff I remember it and use it myself lol, doing the CG test it is just after where it should be so I just added about an ounce 👍
That was a classic stall-spin if I ever saw one (and I’ve trained for them in a full size Citabria) classic recovery is relax the stick and opposite full rudder, but you didn’t have room. Maybe trim both ailerons up a tad to produce a washout and reduce tip-stall tendency? You’re right about more rudder throw I think. Good luck. Such a beautiful plane m
Good idea to trim the ailerons up Angus, alas my brain didn't work fast enough to think about very much 😁👍
Scary, but it survived!
Luck was on my side Bob 🙂👍
Brave man, flying a maiden on a windy day with a delicate model!
Hi Emilo, I've waited weeks for the wind to drop to single figures so I took the opportunity while it was there, not ideal for sure. As it turned out the model is stronger than she looks, cheers 👍
@CliffHarveyRCPlanes Definitely more robust than she looks and also a lovely looking plane. Hopefully, you'll be able to enjoy flying in the good weather we're promised this weekend 🙂
Looks great Cliff. My triplane has substantial down and right motor thrust angle. It's the only way I could get it to fly sweetly
Thanks Mike, that's interesting 👍🙂
She looks amazing! Thanks Cliff!
Thanks, when she's sorted I'll get some nice slow fly pasts 👍
Plenty of rudder instead of ailerons! My Tripehound only has rudder control it it flew beautifully!
I learnt my lesson there Joey, it was originally made for just rudder and elevator, it was an experiment that nearly cost me dearly 🤔👍
@@CliffHarveyRCPlanes Due to the propellor stream, rudder has much better authority, especially when you give the throttle a burst. The ailerons on these high aspect ratio wings will be very prone to adverse yaw, which tends to cause the plane to yaw in the opposite direction of the roll input, which explains the uncoordinated turn shown in the video, and also possibly the tip stall.
Thanks Joe, wise words, that's what happened when I maidened my Dr.1 a couple of years ago 🙂👍
Great job handling all that wind!
Oh yeah! It wasn't an ideal day for a maiden but it's been blowing harder for weeks 👍
Well considering the variable wind Cliff, I thought it was a great maiden flight!! Obviously you made it from Kryptonite or some sort of secret material, to bounce and survive a stall like that 😂🤣 Great job 😀👍
There is actually considerable strength in a tissue covered Wing Ian but I didn't really expect to find it virtually undamaged 🙂👍
I find that you need to use the rudder a lot on WW1 models. BTW the original Sopwith Triplane had ailerons on all three wings.
You're right David, I did consider a full set of ailerons as I was building it, it would have been better I feel 🤔👍
So glad that you had a little luck with the spiral and she lived to have a second chance. The left turn into wind proved too much and induced the spiral, I think that right thrust and the use of the rudder in the turn (mix on the Radiomaster or clever thumbs) will tame out the issue. She looks great by the way.
You're spot-on with your observations Mark, a tough bird and a grassy knoll saved the day 😁👍
Overall a pretty good first flights. You were lucky that you didn't damage her in that crash. We always used to do our test flights over really long grass, even your "long" grass wasn't very long. When it's all sorted she should fly really well.
Ah, the hallowed long grass Tony, I'll get there 🙂👍
Just needs a tweak here, a tweak there... and it'll be flying beautifully. Well done for controlling it on such a windy day.
Hi Gina, thanks, probably not the best day for a maiden but the best for a long time, it told me what I needed to know 🤔👍
I was hoping that you'd reduce throttle to reduce left yaw and allow you to land under control. Glad it survived.
Hi Gary, it's hard to say what I did but having to use the rudder a lot the throttle was moving about as well. I should really have waited for a calmer day 🤔👍
Side and down thrust should do it. All that right Aileron trim is inducing a yaw to the left. You would probably have been better off leaving the aileron untrimmed and instead, lots of right rudder trim. Best of luck on the next outing.
You spotted that too Bob, the ailerons had differential but rudder is king on a Triplane I think, or as original on all three wings 🤔👍
Nice looking plane. There is just too much wind for that light of an aircraft.
Hi Phil, thanks. To much wind ... not really, only when she's flying backwards 😁👍
Stiff whisky when you got home Cliff ?
Looks very promising. Thought about installing a gyro in it to make it easier to fly ?
I imagine the full size would have been a handful to fly too !
Hi Jon, 'gyro' ... no, I'll get her sorted for the next try, this one will he a lot better, cheers 👍
She's gorgeous! 🙂 Umm... I was wondering: do you have enough differential throw on the ailerons? On my old Flair 'Puppeteer' I used to have twice as much 'up' as 'down'. Would it be worth trying a 3 to 1 ratio to give better authority? 🤔
Changing ratios used to mean making custom bellcranks; it's so much easier to adjust servo throws with a modern computer radio that it seems almost like cheating...
Great video. Those 'heart in mouth' moments are why we go flying!
Hi Eleanor, thanks for the comment, I have increased it a little and coupled it to the rudder so I'm hopeful for a better second attempt 🤔👍
That was a pretty scary dive. If you build model airplanes that well, perhaps you should begin making full size ones! You can't be worse than Boeing. :)
It was wasn't it, I nearly bought a full-size kit once but you need a decent space to assemble it 🤔👍
Balance your prop. It's been knocked out of whack when you went in. You can hear it.
I'll check it, cheers 👍
You don't correct a spin with ailerons. You use the rudder.
Hi Bob, thanks for the advice
Thanks Sully 👍
