    People can say whatever they want about the "Turbo" and "Ram It Down" tours...but Rob Halford NEVER sounded better!!! EVER!!!!! He has unlimited range, power and control. Being sober and healthy made an enormous difference in a singer who was already in an entirely different league already.

      During the making of the band's 1986 album Turbo, Halford struggled with increasing substance abuse and violent feuds with his romantic partner. After the latter committed suicide, he resolved to get clean.
      He says that he has been clean and sober since entering a rehabilitation facility following a painkiller overdose in 1986, stating that, before that point, he heavily abused drugs and alcohol.

    I saw them on this tour back in '88. I think this was when Rob's vocals were perhaps at their best, as demonstrated here. I love Rob, and I love Judas Priest, and I will always be supportive of their music, but the fact is, Rob cannot sing like this anymore. If you have seen the Epitaph DVD, it is apparent in many of the lines that were once screamed in high voice, and now toned way down. After 40 years, we can't expect anyone for that matter to continue performing as they did in their 30's. I wish Judas Priest would dig through the archives and put together a DVD from this tour,,, that would be awesome!

    • @GTAfan421

      I wouldn't be surprised if they eventually do. I don't think they could not notice the amount of demand there is for material from the Mercenaries of Metal tour, it's one of the most (if not *the* most) sought after tours as far as bootlegs for Judas Priest goes. I also wouldn't be surprised to see a live video from the Painkiller tour pop up at some point officially, I know someone who was on a crew who were filming one show that was meant to be a video back in 1991, but the video never happened, as Rob left the band, and things got really chaotic after that.

    Tipton''s solo is out of this world here. I was lucky enough to see them on the opening night of this tour I think, in Stockholm. Perhaps it was the second gig, not sure. Great gig, they even playhed 'Johnny B Goode', which wasn't that good Live, would much rather have seen 'Blood Red Skies' or 'Hard As Iron' Live. Had the concert poster for years afterwards. 'Mercenaries of Metal On Tour' I think it read w. the 'Ramt it Down' cover. Not sure where it went. Should have gotten it framed. :/

      @103822167468917469390 hi bro. The reason halford's voice fucked up was cause the painkiller album was so hard for a vocalist that even halford can't sing it live some times. A simple vocalist can't sing even 4 minutes of painkiller album. Halford at 90's was on tour and sing that albums on a whole tour. Thats why his voice break a bit. I saw him here in Athens before 2 days and for his age still this ALIEN-HUMAN CAN SING. HE IS THE BEST VOCALIST IN THE WORLD. After him the next thing is the universe and chaos only. Salute you brother.

    • @glynnie7796
      @glynnie7796 Před 8 lety +3

      +Panagiotis Skordilis The reason for the toughness of the album is mostly in the painkiller song only , because of the fast and distorted style... although screaming for vengeance(song) is absolutely the same style it wasn't that consuming, because of the low popularity of the piece. And ... a lot of singers can sing the other 40 minutes of the painkiller album , other than the title track , where Halford didn't shine that much either ..

    • @SilverTounge85
      @SilverTounge85 Před 8 lety +11

      Raven Blade I agree on the title track to some degree. He never ever managed to pull it off as good Live, as on the record, but he came close a few times in 1991 and a even a few times in HALFORD in 2002-2003. There was issues w. KK/Tipton and himself at the time. There is little interaction on stage between them during the 'Painkiller' tour if you take notice and watch a few concerts, both the Detroit pro-shot, the Irvine Meadows-pro-shot songs, Rock In Rio II and a few excellent videos, like New York 1991. Very very little interaction, compared to this tour and previous ones.
      Halford did have vocal nodes and was emotionally tired from the court stuff, it affected the performances obviously. Sad but true. I am taling about 1990 here. The 'Painkiller' album was great, it sold well, but the concert venues didn't sell out very often..the music scene was sadly changing. In 1990 they had this huge stage, bigger than any previous ones. The "Metal Monster" stage show, as Halford called it. After the 1990 leg of the tour, they had do downscale it, because it couldn't fit the venues they were actually filling. Booking, promoters etc. had to choose less big venues for the 1991 leg and a smaller version of the stage. What was good about the 1991 leg was that Halford have had time to rest his voice, and he was singing great again, but the issues w. K.K. and Tipton were still there. I think the issues w. K.K. was most dominant.

    • @glynnie7796
      @glynnie7796 Před 8 lety +1

      Yes .. I think that the 2003 in Anaheim is his best of painkiller live . But you can't say that his singing was not great , because of his emotional problems .. :/ I really think the biggest problem are the songs , not Downing or Tipton

      @Panagiotis-Skordilis Před 8 lety +3

    Is Dave Holland on drums? He didn't actually play on Ram it down -album---

      Used a machine for Ram it Down , holland played live, although I've heard he had backup. Whatever anybody has to say about Dave Holland, the fact remains that he was in the band during a period that saw them propelled to superstar status. No matter what anyone says or thinks about him or what he was accused of, he was the drummer for this band. I'm not to keen on how his legacy has been treated by the remaining members. They can not erase his membership or drumming style. Scott Travis is a different drummer altogether. It is like comparing Rush drummer John Rutsey and Neil Peart. Peart is a more technical drummer, but Rutsey is the drummer on Working Man. My point is that Holland drummed on many great JP albums and did a damn fine job every time I saw them live back then!

      ButThatsShacksTrain you damn rite man.i don't know if Dave did what they accused him of I wasn't there I would like to think with all my heart that he did not do that Dave Holland was the drummer and that's that.he wasn't flashy or overly flamboyant but he got the job done and got it done well he was the guy I based my drumming after. I have seen priest in concert a bunch of times Dave always knocked it out of the park

      @@guysmiley5550 i respectfully disagree with you. I do agree that he got the job done on those 80's albums. However, as much as I am a judas priest fan, I still think to this day the stupidest choice they ever made as a band was kicking out Les Binks for Dave Holland. Les Binks was the most perfect drummer for Judas Priest ever! He played with amazing jazz, technical proficiency on the Stained Class album, but he knew how to simmer down and have a more commercial approach on the Hell Bent For Leather album. I really wish he stayed with priest. I guarantee you if he did, there is no denying he would be deemed as being one of the best metal drummers of all time

      I thought Dave did a great job with priest. I also liked Les Binks and Scott Travis.Just different styles. If you want hear a more complete representative sample of how good Dave Holland was, pick up some Trapeze. Very funky, proto metal band with Glenn Hughes on vocals for part of their career, great stuff.
