I was 13 when this show came out and it's all me and my circle of misfits ever talked about in 1984. We absolutely loved this show and were devastated when we heard that suburban moms everywhere were freaking out. We knew they were going to doom us. I always loved Derrick from Silver Spoons so this always felt like a spinoff to me. Great show that deserved another few seasons at least. Thanks for the vid!

I was 14 in 1984 and "may" have tried to copy some of Bateman's antics. But I swear my mom never wrote the network. This was a fantastic show, and hearing the theme song from the opening credits brings back great memories. My all-time favorite episode (much like many others) was Dregs of Humanity!!! I still count this as one of my all time favorite shows. I do remember toward the last few episodes, they tried to give Matt some comeuppance, which I didnt like, lol. They probably felt pressured by those letter writers. I can see where having an underage lead with mostly self serving, (but charming) morals, was problematic, but it was indulgent, smart and so funny. He was loyal to Eli, and even to his sister if the chips were down. I loved the episode where you think Matt is going to take Eli's broken date to the dance, Shes made a heart rending speech that she just wanted to be seen at the dance with somebody, someone finally wanting her. Next we see her walk into the dance with Norman, who was indebted to Matt. The girl was happy with her tall new date, and the way it turned sentimental expectations upside down was great comedic structure.

Jason Bateman matured alot in between the year its your move was cancelled and when Valerie premiered. I wonder if that would have changed the Matt Norman dynamic. Bateman soon became the real star of Valerie which is why producers felt they could do the show without Valerie Harper when she threatned to quit. In a way its your move not being renewed for a second season played a part in Valerie Harper being fired from her own show

i dont remember exactly when i saw this show but i was only 12 in 84, it seems like i was closer to 14 or 15 when i saw it on some channel on cable. i remember it was only on for a very short time and i probably only caught 4 or episodes but i really loved it and then it was gone, i kept going back to that channel at the night or time where it had been airing and it was just gone. its one of only 2 TV shows from the 80s that wasnt successful and that i have ever actually searched for, but i havent seen it in decades though i see there are episodes here on youtube. this show along with Valerie gave me sort of a man crush on Bateman for years. but then he seemed to sort of disappear to me through the whole 90s, but in 2001 he showed up out of nowhere on my tv again with another series i liked but was cancelled after only one season "Some Of My Best Friends". it had a cheesy premise and probably would be seen as offensive now, where a really kind of macho New Jersey Italian actor "i thought it was a blatant try at having a Joey character" accidently becomes room mates with a gay guy. but i liked it, partially because i liked a lot of the cast. and after that he seemed to have his carrer going pretty good again so i was/am happy for him. ive just always liked that guy.

Stephen Sundstrom That was the golden age of TV for me (ironically it was when ABC, NBC, CBS ruled). I was thinking a lot about this era during the lockdown. In 2020, we have hundreds of channels and countless streaming networks and there are only a handful of decent shows to watch. Back in the 70’s/80’s and into the 90’s, you had a zillion sitcoms to watch from 8-10 and than the adult shows like St Elsewhere, Dallas LA Law and Hill St Blues were usually on at 10:00.
I missed the era of great sitcoms because you could enjoy them every night as it was easy watching to unwind with the whole family. Now most streaming/cable dramas are a tougher watch and you get burned out after you binge it.
I guess my point is that I remember this show cause I would watch anything back in the day if it followed a great show (time slot was so important). Where I was bored out of my mind during the lockdown as tv in 2020 is sort of overrated. Yes there are great shows, but not the quantity of the 70’s/80’s/90’s.

i hated Jason Bateman when he was a kid, which was mean on my part as I was 22 at the time. It was one thing hating stars close to my age, but he was just a kid back then. But now that's all turned around. I flipped for Arrested Development. I thought it was one of the most maddeningly perfect sitcoms I've ever seen and I never missed an episode. After "Arrested" was on for a while, I saw this movie he did with Mellissa McCarthy which was a cinematic miscarriage that unfortunately continued living. It was one of the worst movies I've ever seen, but what kept me watching til the end was his performance. He was also great in Horrible Bosses.
