  • The Mk5 Volkswagen Golf R32 is a brilliant sleeper on the used hot hatch market, with its spec sheet and ability going far beyond current used prices. The Mk4 has already begun to appreciate in value, and its a matter of time before the same thing happens to these outstanding little motors.
    So with that in mind, here are my thoughts on actually owning my 2021 Car of The Year award winner, which I purchased in January of 2022, in terms of enjoyment, reliability, practicality, performance, sound, fuel economy and more...

    I'm now 72 ( an oldie) and had my Golf R32 Mk5 for 16 years since new in 2007. Its now done 151,000miles and is still serviced by a VW main dealer regularly in Taunton every year and they tell me its the only one they get in their workshop, as most others are now done by 3rd parties. The only problem I ever had in 2015 was a malfunctioning mechatronics unit which received a partial sympathetic warranty from VW . Over the years it may have cost more by going to VW for service, but as they tell me, they come across, thrashed, bashed, modified, tuned and abused R32's with half my mileage that are in a really bad state but owners expect higher prices purely based on mileage. Mines never been modified from new but I once advertised it and got stupidly low offers as a result of mileage, so I decided to keep it and pass it on to my son one day. From 2007- 2013 I was driving from Exeter to Southampton every day ( it was fully serviced) and of course it clocked up 20,000 miles every year for 6 years. Since then its been a Sunday car Its been a brilliant car and still pulls like a train and gets admiring glances form aficionados...I keep thinking about selling it one day as its expensive to tax as a Sunday car , but someone would get a bargain as its only ever been driven by an old bloke since new and fully serviced...No.. I think I'll keep it for a few more years. I may one day realise its true value..and it will be my son that gets the bargain..

      Awesome, glad to hear it's still living a good life as they all deserve. Few other hot hatches seem to run the spectrum of absolute gems to ragged boy racer examples as an R32 when used

      Nice to see you’re still lucky enough to have the car, sold our 07 model after 7 years of ownership.. should have kept it.. RSQ3 now.. sound track is missed

    Going off of Hazzard below. I'm now 67 and am the original owner of a 2008 R32 here in the States. I added a Turbo, air intake, large intercooler, an APR tune, a Peloquin differential, new suspension and large sway bars. It has been garage kept, never pushed that hard and has 38,000 miles on it. I regularly get 30 miles to the gallon with the tune and turbo added. The car makes me grin ear to ear. I will hand it over to one of my sons one day.

    I've had mine about six years and used as a daily, no issues. Just yearly service. Still happy with the car.

    Mines just turned 51k miles , going really steady with it I can easy get 36mpg and on one occasion tad over 40mpg, but that was really steady doing 60mph , doubt there is much to get over that, coming from R26 and R26R performance is not what this engine is about , to me it’s a cruiser , I wouldn’t even say it’s a muscle car , just a good comfortable motorway car that laps up the miles , suspension mines all original and I think it’s as hard as the R26R , it’s comfortable on a good road but anything but you can feel it , handling is a treat, I have PS4s on mine and Jesus it grips , just throw it in and it really hangs on , I’ve never liked golf’s but honestly I love it for what it does , good all round car

    Couldn't agree more about the extra 7th gear. I use mine as a true daily (literally every day), and I've found on trips that involve any sort of Motorway or large A Road driving I'm sticking to 60mph to keep those revs low and the mpg's (half) decent. Not really what most drivers of a top spec golf would be doing!!
    But, I'll never let it go.
    Ever.

    Great story, some people really do think low mileage & low owners equals good car 😂 It doesn’t. I had a 10 owner, 135k mile mk5 R32 for a couple years and the history on the car was unbelievable. Stand in front of it, have a good drive & do your due diligence to check if it’s a good car. I only sold it to buy a friends mk5 R32 in Atlas Grey with wingbacks, factory Nav, factory Bluetooth, parking sensors, DSG etc etc etc. Had that a while now but I still miss the red one. Your son will be happy to have it, if not give me a shout 😂

    5:32 You might have to get your DSG reset. My stock standard Mk5 R32 used to revs at 2800rpm on 100kmh, after dsg reset, it now cruises at 2400rpm on 100kmh. But Im amaze at your fuel economy, I drive conservatively and almost 80% on highway, the best I could achieve is 9.8litres/100kms.

    • @zahimiibrahim3602
      @zahimiibrahim3602 Před rokem +2

      That's strange, impossible even unless the DSG was programmed for you to cruise in 5th instead of 6th gear at 100kph. Maybe it was stuck in sport mode?
      The gear ratios are fixed, nothing you can do about it and no amount of resetting will change the gear ratios.

    Would you say buying one off a dealership with 90k miles on a clock is a good idea for a car that’s nearly 10 k ?

    • @HSGAutomotive
      @HSGAutomotive  Před rokem +1

      All depends on the dealer reviews, and history of the car. If it’s well serviced and had a low number of owners chances are better

    • @HSGAutomotive
      @HSGAutomotive  Před rokem +2

      I would say that 10K for 90K miles is a bit steep though. I’d let this one go for £10,495 with 79K on the clock, major service 6k ago and 2 owners from new

    I now own my MKV No 1098/5000, and have previously owned 3183/5000. Only two MKV R32s. 😂
    How the F*** have you managed to get 34 mpg? It’s not about the fuel prices. It is about the driving style. There have been many times when I drove my R32 like an a-hole, and had so much fun! But the least mpg I got was 8. I could hyper-mile my EA888 GLI to get up to 41 mpg and loved it as well. Gen III EA888 should be notable. Just get rid of the plastic water pumps!!!!
