So folks understand, I'm not "judging" these singers. Obviously the Clark Sisters don't need my help. I'm communicating to folks who aren't singers or who don't understand singing technique, just how amazing these singers are.
You mentioned love song on your video the Clark sisters did a song called Jesus is a love song version finally Karen album
You should check it out
Yeah, of course I get. I understand
I know you probably just give explanation because everyone is so opinionated, super sensitive, over critical, and offended by every little thing these days. Thanks for breaking it down and explaining the technical parts of. Honestly I just joined your channel and I have learned so much. I enjoy singing but I do realize I have alot of work to do in some areas in accomplishing my sound, and technique
Thank you for having this space and platform, it makes me hopeful, like I can reach my goal of singing a little better each da
hey! the one you said was stunning. the one who did the scrawling when the false folds come together is karen clark whom you reacted to a while back. the mother of keara clark shears whom you also reacted too. you didnt mention in the video that I heard so I just wanted to be sure you knew
You’re doing a great job exposing the brilliance of the Legendary Clarke Sisters to a new generation!
Keep going.
Have you heard them sing “Endow Me?”
Their mother, Dr. Mattie Moss Clark is actually credited with establishing the tradition of three-part harmony in choir.
Dr. Mattie Moss Clark 💜💜💜
YES SIR, THAT'S IT!!!!!
#HolinessIsSTILLright🔥❤🔥
They have been singing harmony in choirs for hundreds of years so please stop spreading misinformation.
@@obiephillips9174 apparently you don’t know what separating 3 part harmony in songs is!
Twinkie wrote and arranged this, she's a beast
The arrangement is brilliant.
She arranged and wrote most of their music! All of the sisters learned a lot from her. She is the most musical of the sisters, but they are all so talented and amazing. She can also sing all parts!
@@thechapmanfamily8559 straight beast she is and she has that famous growl....lol
Yes she is‼️
Love them‼️
@@thechapmanfamily8559 They actually all can, and have sung all parts throughout their careers, but Twinkie does it the most effortlessly.
And these are their baby voices!
Right!!! That's all I kept thinking.
Okay!
My man was NOT ready 😂😂. Sometimes I take this for granted. When I see another culture's reaction listening to it, I feel very blessed.
Bison: "the day you listen to this gospel song was the most important day of your life... But to me. It was Sunday" 😂😂

"This is normal" and I'm over here like, "your normal is excellence"
@@LesageSinging Truly I thank you for breaking it down on a technical level even down to the biological methods. This really helped me appreciate gospel music so much more. This was great 💯
Check out his reaction to Tamala Mann singing Change Me. By the end he was in tears and ready to be baptized.🤣🤣🤣
Twinkie Clark (the one on the Organ) wrote almost all of The Clark Sisters material. She arranged the organ chords and the harmonies. She's a genius songwriter.
And one of the finest organists to ever touch a Hammond!
Almost sad, like this guy doesn't know the legacy of the Clark name before doing this vid.
Yes facts❤
As a voice student, I was always instructed to stay away from Gospel singing if I wanted to be a better classical singer. It almost made Gospel singing seem like a less sophisticated way of singing. Thank you for your appreciation for Gospel music and singing.
You can study both.
that instruction is so violently anti black… as if singers like tramaine hawkins, lecresia campbell, cissy houston, etc. never existed
It’s the MESSAGE that makes the difference! She said it at the beginning.
@@aaronnewman7573 RIGHT SHES DONT GET GOSPEL SINGING IS FROM THE LORD IN YOUR SPIRT AMEN
Karen says she did the super high “it’s yours” on an inhale. SHE IS THE GIFT THAT KEEPS ON GIVING 😩🙌🏿
Gospel is the standard for all contemporary music. Black Americans took Opera and elevated it. You can learn all classical and contemporary techniques through gospel. Most important it teaches you to really feel the music. It’s the ultimate genre.
Ooohhh! 🎵🎤 Such a rich comment that shows your love and understanding of the Gospel music genre.
I agree...but I contend it is the message that give it God’s ultimate blessing. He’s gonna bless PRAISE to Him! Hallelujah!!
Excellent comment!
IN A NUT SHELL IT'S THE ANNOINTING OF THE HOLY GHOST IN THEIR SINGING ‼️ 💞🥰🙏🏾🙏🏿🙏🏾💯✊🏿👑
Gospel is about the pain, and the struggles of life. Just like those that were enslaved, all they had was their voice to help get though those rough and difficult times. Most old gospel hymns were from the cotton fields to give hope to those trying to hold on to life, and to God. Gospel signing can heal the soul and mend the broken heart. It's from the struggle that is still with us, it keeps us connected to those who are no longer with us. Stay tuned and stay blessed
You completely nailed it. Unfortunately a lot of today’s gospel has lost that foundation and doesn’t even have the same affect
It's also a combination of cultural practices from our original tribes. It's a tool for communication and expression of joy as well.
You have a lot of likes but it’s a very one sided view of what is Gospel music. Some of it a bug portion of it is JUST celebrating & worshiping Christ. Giving him the glory. Everything isn’t sorrow & despair. Sometimes God simply is JUST praised, celebrated & loved.
Exactly, it comes from the pain of a people that goes back generations. It can't be taught, it has to be sent from God and most importantly, it can't be explained, only felt.
Amen, Ase!
It’s amazing how Raspy and Warm Dorinda’s voice has gotten over the years ❤️
Now you gotta react to the actresses in the film singing this song because the way they almost match that Clark sister sound is unbelievable
That’s right, they did perform the songs themselves. I forgot about that. The movie was excellent!
Yess pleaseeeeee 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽
Yaaaaas
KiKi played her mom well!
They did a fantastic job of mimicking The Clark Sisters.
There is a long standing teaching and belief in the black church that if God gives you a gift, you use it. Be it singing, musicianship, or ministry we are taught that if you give it 100%, God's glory and light will shine through and bring those in that do not know Him. Also what was mentioned about the emotion and years of relationship with God is the other part of it. We channel the emotions that are felt during all the ups and downs we have endured in life, along with the faith and belief that God will keep us no matter what comes in the future. That is the basis of gospel music.
This! So well said!
🙌🏾👏🏾PRAISE GOD👏🏾🙌🏾, your comment moved me to tears, ur so, sooooo spot on!!!!
Amen
So eloquently put.
Yes indeed, we were taught “ you do your best and let God do the rest “.
Mariah loves the Clark sisters mainly Karen and Twinkie. They are so amazing vocalists!
just incredible. Its so great to watch.
Beyoncé too. Aliyah even sampled one of their songs on One In A Million
yebba credits karen clark sheard (the woman who is lead majority of the song) as one of her main inspirations since she was a little girl. im sure you can hear it lol
The high notes on “it’s yooooours!!” Is actually an inhale technique Karen uses. That’s not an exhale. I don’t know if anyone else does this but it’s very difficult to do. Both Karen and Dorinda do this!
Interesting. I apologise for asking, but could you tell me the time stamp? I want to revisit this so I can try to do it 😂
At 17:00
Both times she does it
Dorinda Clark Cole and her runs!!!!
These ladies are books to themselves that create a complete set
Pretty sure that is NOT what she is doing…
THEY KILL IT EVERY TIME!!!!! Can you please react to them singing “Jesus is a love song” on Karen’s special
YES, 1 OF THEIR ALL-TIME BEST & MOST BEAUTIFUL & PERFECT PERFORMANCES, PLS DO IT!!!!!
Ooh. That's a good one.
I agree! You must hear Jesus is a Love Song! Your ears will never be the same.
I Love, "FOREVER MORE!!!!"
🎶🤩🎶🙏🎶❤️🎶
That is my favorite I listen to it over twenty times. I love when Karen holds that 20 second note!
I appreciate the analysis. They are not "performing". They are crying out about the human condition. Music is therapy in their culture. Everyone sings. Grandmama leads. Thank you!
My mother went to school with some of them and was going to sing in a talent show that they were in. She said they sang first and after she heard them said "I'm not singing after that!" Lol!
Hey believe it or not, Karen the lady that's hitting the crazy high notes (also the baby of the sisters), she inhaled to hit those extreme high, head notes on the "yours." It was a technique taught at their mothers vocal school back in the 70s.
When Karen sings "its yours" she is actually breathing in! Listen careful and watch her closely.. she is a vocal beast! She is only 18-19 here too!!!!
Someone said as much and I'm super interested. I'll have to watch through it again.
Yes, yes she is breathing in, Karen is a beast, although she was in her twenties at this time. This was during the 1980’s.
16 or 17? Wow.
@@iesharobinson8444 she was around 22-23
What do you mean she’s breathing in
Funny how when Karen started singing... his facial expression was shocked LOL... Lil baby Karen is the showstopper of the clark sisters
13:37
Yeah lol looks like her fell in love! Lol
You are definitely one to watch with your 100 % relatable commitment to breaking down music, vocals, the voice box and all the muscles used to manipulate sound and the passion that comes with delivering performances like this! Excellent job Sir, just excellent!
The technical term for it is “mmm” 🤣 love it 🤌
What? Wait. He’s white? Very white? LOL! I appreciate your appreciation for an art form (Gospel) that rarely gets it full respect & credit as a distinct musical genre that “looks” relatively easy and like no real work, only because those involved are so masterful at their craft.
who in their right mind thinks this is easy? Gospel is a genre only the extremely talented can even participate in. To give long performances with techniques that are potentially harmful if executed poorly, then to consistently belt, jump in to a three part harmony, and the list goes on.
@@LesageSinging I think because these singers convey such an air of effortlessness, often simply standing flat footed and just singing, those without any understanding of vocal technique think it’s “easy.”
Mad props to their mother, the phenomenal Dr. Mattie Moss Clark. "One one hand, every single one of their voices is gorgeous and they're not compromising vocal quality to blend with one another."
None, and I mean none can explain truly anointed gospel music singers except the Lord God Himself!!! The Lord is the only one who can anoint and appoint those with these gifts.
Twinkle ( on organ) is responsible for writing , arranging etc.SHE IS AMAZING!@!
Twinkie* (stupid sutocorrect)
You’re talking about one person and that is Twinkie Clark. They’re just doing what they’re told. Twinkie is the genius behind that difficult arrangement.
Agreed but even with a legendary arrangement as this it takes extremely talented and master singers to pull it off even in the gospel community there's not many who could pull any of this off as beautifully and they always have input that's why they were the best gospel group to date
6:45 It’s the fact that they’re sisters and that they have such SIMILAR VOCAL CHARACTERISTICS & PLACEMENT that makes the “Name it Claim it” in unison so ….. it just sends a tingle up your spine!
Gotta listen Jesus Is A Love Song live from "Finally Karen...Live! 1997" About a decade after this performance and their voices are stronger & harmonies even tighter
This was sooo good! Sisters have that advantage of singing together their whole lives to perfect their harmonies. I recommend checking out Toni Braxton’s 4 sisters singing The Lord’s Prayer 🙌🏾
their time together SHOWS. I was thinking about demonstrating how difficult it is to be this tight by singing acapella harmonies, but my ego prevented it ha.
@@LesageSinging 😂😂
Gather up some GOOD singers who don’t always sing together, ur know the music well - and see how tight they can be on a song like this.
With the way you ended this one now you GOTTA do their Live version of Jesus is a Love Song.
Im no longer religious but I grew up in church and there is just something about Gospel Music and Gospel Singers. The Connection to Spirit through song is... 💙
So don’t be Religious, because that’s not the way, the LORD says you must be born again as in John 3, so never give up your personal relationship with the LORD GOD.
I always wondered what is meant when someone says this. May I ask you what you mean when you say “no longer religious”? No judgment either way just sincerely curious. Thank you so much! 🌺
Lovely comments all around. I'm no longer religious either. I usually pray alone when I do pray...I no longer attend church regularly but I still support it financially and I know that GOD is that "something" about Gospel music that we find so incredible.
Isn't God WONDERFUL!
He made us human instruments, that sometimes baffles the mind.Glory to God!
Listening to this young man share his knowledge of voice/misic, gives me more reason to give God, our creator, praise for how Amazing He is!
You should listen to her daughter as well, she’s amazing also Kerra Sheard.
He did, about 2 months ago!
@@monicacooks4874 I need to look at his reaction on her.
Being from Oakland, CA, I actually remember this recording and video, at the Paramount Theater, when I was a child. Those outfits were just as iconic as the music. I would love to see a critique of the other artists there that night: The Hawkins family and Shirley Caesar us what comes to mind first.
By the way, “I’m very white” and “shaking my groove thing” made my day. 😂
And the mighty clouds of joy, the late great Rev. James Cleveland they where all great in everyway, that whole concert will always be my all-time favorite 💯💯💯💯😍🥰😍🥰🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
Gospel singers have this belief that they really got from the Clark sisters mom. She would always say, when you go out to sing, sing as if it's your last time. Never take it for granted because it may be your last time singing. So i think that's where you find the answer to your question. They always sing as if it is their last time no matter the venue occasion or quantity of ppl in attendance.
And there is a feeling that comes over you when you sing gospel that you can't explain. It's called or referred to as the holy spirit. I hope you react more to these ladies! They will continue to blow your mind!
It's been said that their mother the late Mattie Moss Clark taught them not to out sing one another but to sing as ONE❤
That's Queen of the Hammond Twinkie Clark in that organ. She wrote and produced pretty much all the music. Gospel music visionary. Reconstructed Twinkie. And their Mother was a legend also. She is the reason for those helping harmonies that sound like an entire choir with a handful of voices.
There's something magical about the blend of siblings
Yes. The Winans, The Five Stairsteps, Jackson 5, Tavares. Ect
These women are all sopranos but sing different parts but their mother taught them how to blend with each other so they can sound like 1 person.
I appreciate your commentary and expertise... Shake your groove thing...😃 you got speechless at 13:40 and just took it all in
They are all sisters. Their mother had them learning the different scales in music. The mother was the master in bringing the four (4) parts to a choir. So, those five (5) sisters learned together to not over sing one another and that is where the Harmony comes in.
Check out the late Pastor Daryl Coley. He was an amazing Gospel singer and also was the singing voice of "Bleeding Gums Murphy" on an episode of the "The Simpsons". He's one of my favorite vocalists. I've seen him performed live many years ago. He was amazing!!!
I love watching vocal coaches analyze, review, and identify technique especially with gospel singers, because I grew up in the church singing and I learned a lot of these things by imitation and later styling them to “my sound”… it’s amazing to learning what my body is doing to produce those sounds.
Twinkie is the arranger of their songs. I think she had a doctorate in music and composition if I'm correct.
She received an honorary doctorate..... she played initially by ear , but eventually studied classical music at Howard University. She has what you would call a gift.... we in the church call it the anointing....
Her mother - their mother; ( Dr Maddie ) had the Doctorate, the daughters and the vision.
I think you would appreciate watching the Clark Sisters Lifetime movie that came out last year. You will witness the amount of practice, critique and drive they had to employ to pull these amazing songs off. Thank you for sharing your technical knowledge and explaining what is happening physically.
When he said " I'm very white" I almost died laughihg
mmmmpphhh is the technical term🤣🤣🤣
It would be awesome if you would review the group Take 6, their harmonies are mind blowing 🥰
Yassss!!! So much for him to cover😂
My favorite gospel group Take 6 !! 💯😍😍💖🙏➕🎤🎵🎼🎵🎼
As someone who has had a dear love and appreciation for not only the artistry but the ministry of The Clark Sisters for as long as my ears could hear, it nearly brings me to tears to see someone (particularly one of a different culture) , fall in love with these women- it just really warms my heart. They are the pinnacle and that still stands in 2021 going into 2022.

I am cracking up about how shook he was when Karen started singing 🤣🤣🤣
I grew up on The Clark and I still get chills every single time I hear them live.
Well their mother was the great DR.Mattie Moss-Ckark. She was famous for four part harmonies in choirs if I'm not mistaken
You should see the clark sisters movie its phenomenal and you can see why and how they sing the way they do
Oh, where can you find that movie?
The fact the this song and concert was performed in the early 80’s is so amazing that it’s being appreciated today
Just discovered your wonderful channel. Keep up the good work. Your reactions are genuine. Welcome to the black church experience. This is what we were raised on. We had no teacher but we understood harmony and music. Our drum beat to creativity.
Yes ,your are correct..Their mother started them out at ages 2.5,4, 7,10, and 12...
When he started talking about bobbing his head....😀🙂😀😄 that was funny.
You were in my recommendations yesterday (the video about you reacting to Tamala). I was so happy to see your reaction to that video. It's so cool seeing another gospel song today. I know you said you weren't religious, but I truly feel God is telling us both something...he is not done with us ❤️
Twinkie wrote this masterpiece. Idk how she pulled this one together but God gave her a gift he only gives to very few. She is top 3 greatest song writers ever
I love how she puts the harmonies together. Its easy enough to understand music theory and place a bunch of notes. Would only take a few years to develop that skill. What she is doing is different. The harmonies are coincidently complex. It's clear she is thinking about the music first and the words first. I love her arrangements.
@@LesageSinging just like her mom she would wake up in the middle of the night with lyrics and melodies in her head needing to be put to table. But 'Name it and Claim it' is just the tip of the iceberg. Songs like 'Oh What He's Done for Me' 'You Can't Tell It' 'Endow Me' and 'Jesus is a Love Song.' All of those songs from the lyrics to harmonies with her sisters and the arrangements are musically mind blowing. Her writing seems to get better with every passing year. One of the most consistently genius writers out there.
Absolute geniuses. Their evolution from this performance is even mind boggling. They are all equals vocally - so similar yet so different. Karen’s soprano evolution is unmatched.
@Lesage, thank you for displaying The Clark Singers. Their tight harmonies are a result of their mother’s tutelage. Dr. Mattie Moss Clark as well as their sister Albertina “Twinkie” Clark who is the organist. She wrote and arranged many of their songs. She was beyond her time and is responsible for moving the Traditional Gospel music genre into a more contemporary style.
Your analysis of this performance was a joy to watch. By the way, I feel your pain as I grew up living by an airport, train tracks, and a military base. I appreciate you sticking with your video despite that challenge.
My favorite gospel group of all time!! They were so young here...It’s hard to believe that they get better year after year!! They are truly blessed/anointed. God threw some extra oil on their vocal cords. Also, their Mom was a great teacher. Dr. Mattie Moss Clark. I subscribed a few days ago. After watching you respond to Tamala Mann. I’ve checked out some of your other videos...I see you responded to Jesus is a love song by the Clark Sisters & you enjoyed it as much as I do!! So glad I subscribed.
I LOVE the Clark Sisters and I love your newly found admiration of them. It’s so interesting how they each have their own distinct sound but also sound like each other at the same time. Thank you for taking the time out to explain the differences. A lot of people think black singers are yelling and shouting when their actually singing with various arrays of oranges and inflections. If anyone accuses you of judging then over look them. First they haven't been paying attention and two everyone knows the Clark Sisters can only be judge by one entity not a person. Keep doing you.

This is exactly why they were given the gift of voice. We are hearing what God’s love sounds like. It wouldn’t have resonated with you unless they were this technical and talented. It transcends race, genres and more because it was strategically intended to. God is so amazing.

Hello fellow music analyst!! I love the time you’re taking with this particular arrangement of this song! You’re quite knowledgeable and I feel what you’re talking about/explaining can be easily understood by folks who may not know much about the mechanics of singing. The Clark Sisters are absolute royalty! They and I were born and raised in Detroit Michigan. They’re my fav female group for sure. I think I got part of my love for harmony from them.

What you hear in Gospel music is the shared pain and the church is the only place where we can express or release it into this collective sound of beauty. I loved listening and watching you analyze the Clark sisters. Your reaction to them from a technical aspect was beautiful. The ability to all those things that you hear is from that pain that is ever present.
Some of the finest voices in music has come from those who have come from a place of serious pain. Amy Winehouse. When you hear those magnificent voices and your body responds to it because you just felt what they experience daily in a way that you understand in a technical musical way.
Jaron M Legrair and you are my favor on music. You both are very knowledgeable and you teach. your analysis of Rachelle Farrell was my favorite. Your appreciation and acknowledge of her fine piano playing. You give more on the technical aspects of the voice that I like to hear in detail that you do a bit more than Jaron. He gives me the expressive way a singer is expressing their particular way. We both know all about gospel and the Church so with Jaron it's about the sound and delivery.
Oh and check out LaCrecia Campbells Even Me. Her voice is out of this world
Yasssssszzzzz!!!!!!! Drip.... Dropppppp!!!! Chills I listen every week to Even Me
I think this happens more often in gospel music more than you realize which I think is going to be a wonderful time of discovery for you. A few artists that you might want to consider listening to along that vein would be the Winans, the Hawkins, Vanessa Bell Armstrong, and I'm trying to think of some others but just can't right now. I almost wish I could hear this through your ears the first time and I grew up around this music as well as other genres.
Edited: because per usual these days voice-to-text went absolutely randomly insane with flying capitals and words I didn't even say. LOL
Clark sisters are everything to gospel and R&B!!!
I loved watching your reactions to this performance. You displayed excitement, amazement, and confusion throughout the video.
Wonderful video!!! Thank you for taking the time to highlight these spectacular voices.
OMGSH! I love your critique on this. Your analysis is absolutely on point and understood by me. I heard this performance many, many years ago as a teenager. You put into words my emotions about this Clark Sister's performance. Now, instead of my mouth just left completely open, I can come back to your video here and somehow make sense of it all, lol... Good job! Thanks!
I can appreciate this young man for this appreciation for these legends. I love it. Christ makes ALL the difference. It’s more than just “the church,” it is a matter of PRAYER & the fact that their mother prayed that the Lord would gift them and also they are committed to serve the Lord! You should do bc”Oh Come Emmanuel” by them. The Lord Jesus bless you all! He’s the only Way. 🙏🏽✝️
Please react to them singing “ Jesus is a love song”!!!
Beautifully said. I don’t always understand your technical explanations, but I always feel it when you’re moved by the music. Thanks for what you’re doing. It’s unique, special, and making a difference.
