Thoughts on Stanin
Stanin's audio chops are the best I've seen in the space. I'd LOVE to see madox discuss these audio tracks for a deeper perspective. Stanin is not prioritizing singing techniques to achieve anything artistic in these two tracks. That does NOT mean he cannot do technical things. It's more of a statement of his artistic priorities. I'd need to hear more. I'd also need to hear his beatboxing in a competition context without any audio editing. Though, i'd argue that's a waste of time for Stanin. Why would it be an important thing to have Stanin do? He has nothing to prove and I think it'd be better for beatboxing in general if we moved away from competition clout as a pre-requisite for being an artist.
Thoughts on Improver
Improver is no stranger to the competition scene in beatboxing. I think his skill set isn't conducive to winning competitions the same way king inertia would be. However, I do think improver has a skillset that has far more broad appeal. His voice is also just pretty. Because of Improver's broad technical skillset, we see him leverage that for music making. Using arpeggios to outline harmony is by far the most difficult aspect of music making when you are a solo singer without an instrument. I actively exclude polyphonic singing because the ONLY person I've ever heard use polyphonic singing to outline harmonic progression is Lalah Hathaway. I am not yet convinced that this is anything beyond a SUPER COOL trick to be thrown into an arrangement; not the basis for an entire arrangement.
What does this mean?
So, being able to perform arpeggios allows improver to unlock an entire element of music. Additionally, improver's technique allows for him to better utilize dynamics by using technique. These allows for him to communicate melodies in a way that Stanin did not in his other tracks.
Stanin could easily use a harmonizer or do more layering as he did at 15:15. Stanin also used reverb and multiband compression to mess with dynamics. You'd be hard pressed to choose a "winner" without establishing a biased criteria. Its far more interesting to look into the unbelievably high level of niche abilities that each artist employs.
My preference? Improver. My knowledge and appreciation of technique goes deeper than the same for audio production. However, it is BECAUSE of that bias that I will be listening to more Stanin. I have a lot more to learn from Stanin than I do Improver.
