Six Flags Discovery Kingdom Review Vallejo California

- This marine life and amusement park offer a variety of attractions for groups of all ages, yet it still feels like a Six Flags attempt at a Busch Gardens or SeaWorld park. Does this help or take away from what Discovery Kingdom has to offer? This is my full review, as of my visit in June of 2016!

Lol
5:17 those penguins are getting a little TOO friendly with eachother ;)

( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
SFDK has great rides. It's my home park. However, I do not like the way the animals are being treated. The elephants are being pierced with a sharp object as they continue to circle over and over again. And if you look at the rays, there are about a dozen of them, all crammed in a little pool and each one of them has a scratch/scrape of some sort on them. Very concerning. But I do love their rides. I'm going in June.
Mega Fetus Me too tomorrow
There is so much more that sees the eye. Six Flags does a lot of amazing things for their animals, which are rescued and rehabilitated. The rays are fine. They naturally live in small environments and if they were stressed out the aquarists would know. The reason why they have scratches and scrapes, also known as bite marks, are because they naturally bite each other. Rays live in schools but just like with any animal they will get a bit territorial sometimes. While I agree that forcing the elephants to do that, Six Flags does AMAZING work with animals that are going extinct and have been through heavy abuse in their lifetime.
Having worked there myself they only have 4-6 rays in the pool....i managed that area and they treat them fine....u cant even touch them without washing ur hands and theres a dome and netting to protect them from any potential threats such as extreme heat....debris....or predators
All of the stingrays that they have in the tiny pool or males and they do bite each other to show who is dominant and I have seen this happen while I was at the park The elephants I do agree with
Mega Fetus bro. They have a Boomerang, and a SLC. 2 bad vekoma rides in 1 park
SFDK is my home park, and I have to agree with you. I always felt it was a SF park for families. I'm just glad there's more for the teens and adult to do
Coaster Studios: "I'm not talking about adding an SNS 4D Freespin"
Six Flags: "Oh great idea, a Freespin would be great for the 2019 season!"
Coaster Studios: ...
This is one of three home parks around the Bay Area, other Than California's Great America, and Waterworld
They need to scrap Kong ASAP, it's one of the most miserable coasters on the planet.
CynicalExperiments ur dumb as hell . That ride made history there and it was the first one they made. Give it credit
Same, I got a headache from Kong too, stayed the whole time I was there. It's hard on your ears lol
Heys Plays “muh nostalgia”
CynicalExperiments you just gotta hold on to the metal side bars and hodl
CynicalExperiments I agree
Tomahawk? Lol. Tasmanian Devil actually.
Sorry, I probably got it confused with another similar flat ride.
Ikr
even thought it's my home park, I feel you Taylor in the way that this park needs a real depth coaster that can fit in with the height requirement like one of those chance coasters that Kentucky kingdom has and that would be awesome
It certainly has unique attractions, but as you said, other parks do it better.
Dialga305 What else can you say besides going off of his opinions? Or making it your own. Was your experience the same as his or are you just agreeing with him because you never experienced it yourself?
@@chaoticzomba-gameplayandmo225 u hella tight
@@chaoticzomba-gameplayandmo225 Lol wtf are you even talking about? Here's an opinion for ya. This park is an embarrassment and absolute dogshit. How's that?
lol, I don’t know where you got the notion that SFDK was one of the stronger Six Flags parks, but that’s definitely not the case. It’s a decent park, but it’s on the smaller side. If they could squeeze in an Intamin Megalite somewhere, that would allow them to pack in something thrilling but still remain within the city’s height restriction. But for now, I prefer California’s Great America overall.
same
imagine sayin great america is better then sfdk. great america is literally wack & they only have one good roller coaster which is gold striker. their other roller coasters are plain and the park isnt allat. six flags has a better line up & rides.
Precious Green lmao ever heard of railblazer. the only good ride at sfdk is the joker.
@@pickleman4089 Right, RailBlazer is incredible; I consider it NorCal's best coaster, personally. SFDK's top three is solid, but I would argue CGA's top three coasters are a bit stronger. CGA's layout is a lot nicer too, imo.
pickle man at the time i went to great america railblazer was being built so i cant speak for that. but like i said the only actual good ride is gold striker & i said what i said. imagine thinking that joker is the only good ride. medusa is hella good along with V2, & Superman. even thought wonder woman isnt a roller coaster its still a good ride. six flags roller coasters are way better then great america's. its not up for debate. Grizzly is horrible, along with Demon, Flight Deck, & Flight Deck. their rides aren't better.
I thought that joker ride was twisted colossus with on track lol
GamingWithRoss YT Medusa and Twisted Colossus had a baby
I agree with you.. Dudes take an hour just to serve a little cup of ice cream.
Really?! And what do you think if I go afeter mid-September?
Is it possible to touch dolphins?
FOOD IS SO EXPENSIVE THERE DEAR GOD
I think every amusement park has expensive food, unlike food courts at shopping malls.
It would be cool if they got an Intamin blitz coaster like maverick
maybe 2024?
Maybe 76.78242e+7802 years from now.
they have 2 launch coasters so
The park is limited on where it can place coasters because of all the animal attractions and it being a small park. There used to be no roller coasters back when it was exclusively an animal / kids park, which is why all the rides are on the old parking lot or on the side (like where the Joker is). Also I loved the Butterfly house as a kid.
If you are looking for a huge theme park, this isn't it (Magic Mountain is a 5 hour drive away). It's a small park with 2 kids areas and a bunch of family rides / shows. Where the coasters are now is pretty much the only place they are going to be, and they are locked by a river, so that's probably why they re-did roar. Not sure how you could fit another major ride unless it twists around Medusa.
This is my home park and I like it, but they could definitely improve their coaster lineup. 1 way they can make it better is by adding a coaster like Hollywood Dream - The ride at Universal Studios Japan. It's essentially a B&M hyper but its only 144 feet tall. I would like to see them add one and maybe interact with Lake Chabot if they have the rights to build on it, but I don't know if they're able to fit it. If they do add one, it would give them a non-inverting thrill and steel coaster, an airtime machine, attract more visitors, and give them a nice top 3. OwO
angrybird16755 Or even better, a Chance Hyper GT-X
Yeah, and remove Kong. It gave me such a headache!
angrybird16755 yeah!!!!!!.
My home park too but they need to do something with that lake
@@carteranderson280 Lol yeah forreal.
I love the animals. This my home park. Oakland!
Baron Walsh Orinda!
I live in Oakland tooo!
pittsburg, ca
I agree with you. Discovery Kingdom is 2 hours away from me, but I don't visit it too often. On the other hand, CGA is 25 minutes from me, and when it opens, I will visit it with Patriot and all that good stuff.
I too don’t visit this park very much because of toll on two bridges, traffic on the freeway, and distance from where I live in San Mateo county, but Discovery Kingdom is an awesome park to me
i' d definately think joker is a major coaster.
MovieBoysHD oh it is, but it shouldn't be the main attraction. Every park should strive to have a great top 3, and SFDK just doesn't have that.
is that bad?
Coaster Studios Joker, Medusa, Superman seems like a solid top 3.
was superman one of the first type of that coaster?
MovieBoysHD true, but they should get a giga, hyper, or one like kingda ka
3:26 when your sleeping with someone and they start moving alot
Rotflmao
5:18 nice twister there
Six flags magic mountain is my favorite
Not to be rude, but if you don't count Joker or Medusa as a stand out coaster, than I just think you are picky.
Elias Mertens Joker is a prominent coaster and so is Medusa, but I'd argue that those 2 are good supporting coasters but shouldn't be the star attraction.
Coaster Studios Yes, but most six flags parks stand out roller coasters is the parks rmc.
You do make a good point, but they all have other great coasters to back it up. Look at Six Flags Over Texas, for example. New Texas Giant is the best, but you have Mr. Freeze and Titan to back it up. So if you have Joker and then Medusa to back it up, what's the 3rd? Superman? No, a Sky Rocket II isn't meant to be a star attraction. They need a prominent coaster that focuses more on airtime than inversions. There's plenty of coasters types that can do that while staying under the 150 foot height limit.
Coaster Studios I really hope they get a Chance Hyper GT-X or a Gravity Group or GCI woodie. All of those focus on airtime really well.
If you guys have ever taken a ride on V2 at discovery kingdom it is very fun and the hang time you get on it after the 1st launch and after you slow down a bit it's really fun the 150 foot limit makes this ride special because of the inversion of you ever go back I definitely recommend V2 there is no impulse that inverts you besides Volcano
I get chills watching this because it’s full of old memories I had
I go there almost every weekend (because i live there)its a good place for fun, thrills, and family .my personal favorite ride is madusa.also it has good food and snacks.and my personal favorite snack is rock candy.i also love the games and prizes you can win my personal favorite is ball toss.i also love the animalls there i suggest the butterfly room (or house) and the shark aquarium.😜😋😋😜😋😊😊😋😜😋😊😊😜😜😋😊☺😋😋😜😜😋😊☺☺😋😜totally recommend! The only thing i hate is i cant go there right now because of coronavirus.😭😭i cant wait till it clears up.
I loev this place i live a mile away

Fox Coaster uuuuuuuuh go harder uuuuuuuuuuuun
Ohhhhhh yassssss deeeeeeper
GT4SGM It's all the way in
You guys need to stop.
Harder faster deeper sorry my cousin made me wrong 😣
Did that coaster train just travel down the drop in slow motion in a regular shot? 0:40
Weird
Tyler Wood it’s just slow motion.
this is my home park- I’m in love with it 🤷♀️👏
He said coaster review instead of park review
Last time I went there was literally no lines on most of the rides but Joker still had like a 25 minute wait.
I think a custom hyper GTX or mini B&M hyper (like goliath LR or HDTR) would be nice
Yeah, let's have a Lightning Run clone replace the SLC while we're at it.
Mackenzie Fritz YES
what is HDTR?
🤡Joker🃏: Awesome!
🔵Superman Ultimate Flight🔴: Cool!
🐍 Medusa 🐍:Great!
⚡️V2⚡️: Fun!
🌵Road Runner Express🐦: Ok.
🐍 Cobra: Fine...
↩️Boomerang: Meh...
🐵 KONG: SH💩T!
When you said great America will have a bright future I cried
I am going there this Friday for a field trip for school so I am glad I watched this
I feel like Six Flags is losing it they need to use that lake for a ride or something but it's just not being used. Great America feels cleaner and has a better atmosphere
Scott Coleman they can not build over the lake or anything they can't even but a show on the lake anymore because one it's the against city laws and two they would get sued if they build over that lake
Does Great America have a zoo/aquarium? Does Great America have an RMC, a huge B&M floorless, or even a launch coaster?
Elias Mertens california's great America does not have a zoo or animals at all and do not have an RMC
Grotti Crime FamilyHD I was pointing out what Discovery Kingdom had that Great America didn't to show how Discovery Kingdom is better than Great America.
well does discovery kingdom have a GCI or a waterpark? Will they even have a bright future like Great America does?
You are hilarious! 😂 I love this review and I agree in many respects! First of all, why is V2 almost never working??? That is an awesome ride that dominates the skyline and it’s always down when I visit. Second of all, the biggest issue with this park is NO SPACE! There is no room to expand and build a mega coaster. There is a lake taking up so much room and is not used anymore. The animals (zoo) takes up a good half of the park. Coasters I would like to see replaced are Kong and Boomerang. Honestly, nobody will miss those two when they’re gone. They are rough, uncomfortable and bang your head. Not fun! Please get rid of them. Discovery Kingdom will never be Magic Mountain, but if they fill the lake maybe they can get creative and make more space. That would be a little sad though because the lake is very pretty, but there is almost no other room to expand. To reiterate, get V2 working!! Medusa is currently the best coaster there, but Joker and Superman are also very good.
I’ve been there on several occcasion and my big complaint is that the park lacks focus in terms of what it wants to be. I mean, think about it: the shows, as campy and cheesy as they are more belong at a zoo rather than an amusement park, the animals are always kept in random spots on the way to the rides (Penguins in between the aquarium and the DC area and Big cats placed near some of the smaller rides in the back of the park)
V2 is just about always broken down. They need to fix/completely replace it.
Taylor, I think your review was pretty much spot on; I visited this park earlier this year, and yes, Joker, Medusa, & Superman are pretty much the only coasters worth enjoying. V2 seems to be closed(Indefinitely?), and I heard Kong was so bumpy and rattly that I decided to pass. As an animal lover, I really did enjoy the Zoo and Marine wildlife aspect of the Park, other than the very weak acting in the Sea Lion show. -- (yes I know the whole Wild animals in captivity argument). The negatives were the ridiculously slow and understaffed food vendor lines, and so much of the park had abandoned show arenas, and there were constant shutdowns of all the major attractions. I did need the entire day to cover all aspects of the park, including riding the top 3 a couple times.
5:58 Well, you predicted the future
I like any coaster I get on (except Kong) and this park is great for anyone who lives in the valley or bay area. His criticisms are a bit stronger than mine but I'm just a casual coaster fan, its a fun park. That being said I would love it if they put an original inverted B&M or wing coaster that flies across the lake.
Hey! Fairgrounds! That’s near the Franciscan Apartments.
This is my home park I think they should request a new height limit and have v2 open atleast a lot it’s like never open i went once it was open but it was amazingly great it had like so much hangtime
I live 2 miles away from here...
Got an all season pass going for the first time tomarrow!!! YAY
As a pass holder and that being my home park. this is my last year holding a pass until theres some new rides that come in. Give it about 2 years. I've had a lot of fun at that park when I first started going. Now i really only go for a social aspect.
It's fun to me because that is the only six flags park I go too
V2 is never open, the last time i went on it was when i was 9, it was also my first coaster so its disappointing i vant go on it again lately
Austin Turner it's always open
That ride is plagued with technically problems! Get it working Six Flags!! It is SO much better than Boomerang!
@@aidenferretti9797 no, it was closed nearly a year or more. I work here, it just recently reopened after being painted and relabeled "The Flash".
As a local dude you nailed the review.
Kinda neat to see my home towns name in a video title with the amusement park I grew up with.
Ikr lovin it😍😍
They need a couple exotic water rides to make up for the height restrictions. Or make a terrain coaster that has multiple launches? It also looks like it needs a coat of paint. But it was like that when I built sets for a TV ad for them back in the 90's.
I used to go here when I was a kid in the 80ds and 90ds, it was called Marine world Africa USA and they only had animals so the animals were originally there, if you see the whale or dolphin or bird or any of the other animal shows they will educate you. They only added the rides and six flags to get people to come to the park to see the animals. There were once helped by SeaWorld and now its Six flags. Six flags kind of took over and now the animals are just not that important. I do like the rides sometimes and love the animals but I kind of feel bad for the animals because they are suffering for our entertainment of roller-coasters, fast rides and screaming. There is even a fright fest that is pretty good too, there are haunted houses and zombies walking around and craziness. They even do the thriller dance, and some of those dancers are good.
i live so close to that park i can see it out of my window
i Live 5-10 minutes away
Vaporeon134 cool!
No one's talking about the penguins at 5:18? I'm surprised
dude...@ 5:54 you called it. and you posted this LAST YEAR. unintentional mind blow haha
This park looks so cool.
We're going on a big California vacation in a couple of summers, we should visit some time.
im going there this summer !! ive been to the great america and it was awesomeee ~ however based on the pictures sfdk looks more fun lol, idk guess we'll see when i go to sfdk!!
I'm in southern California so I don't know if I'll ever go there I've only been to Six Flags Magic Mountain, Disney land, Lego Land, Sea World San Diego, and Knotts
Six flags Great escape, Magic mountain, and Fiesta Texas are in my opinion the best ones in the US. SFMM is my home park so it's special to me, been going there my entire life, SFFT has a great variety of rides, thrill coasters and a lot of flat rides. Plus the night laser show is amazing, and then SFGE is very unique, it's literally a giant indoor water park.
Do Intamin impulses just hate Taylor?
Lucas Bradley really tho, the one at gam and dk
Dk?
CrazyWharf625 Discovery Kingdom or DK
when I rode it the park was not open only for a group of people for the picnic in the back
As my home park I think you are being a little harsh but I get your point there are better parks. The reason you and others might not like it is because of space. SFDC only has 135 acres of space so far and that’s not much room for an amusement park. Also there’s barely ant room to expand and make more rides because 3 sides of it is surrounded by water and the side that’s not literally has the highway right in front of it. So it’s a somewhat small park and trying to fit a new supper coaster like Madusa is like trying to fit a semi truck in your house unless they tear down a ride like Kong or Joker it’s not likely to happen, but possible. However it’s a great park and I think you should go there, just wanted to point that out.
This is my home park, and the fact that I’d rather make the 5 hour trip down to Magic Mountain just shows the quality of this place lol
Oh man.. 2022 here and let me tell ya.. I love me some Great America in Santa Clara... But boy that park needs a coat of paint at the very least. The Top Gun ride- oh I'm sorry, Top Flight is covered in cob webs and dirt, the 2 story ferris wheel is also dirty and old......
Can't wait to check out Discovery Kingdom for the 1st time this year!
As someone who visits the park every year, I couldn't agree more. Our Six Flags isn't all that dim but it isn't very exciting either. And every visit, there always seems to be one or two shut down rides. I wish they could just add more fun little attractions such as an inside arcade. I'd spend most of my money there honestly.
Which one is better; in every way( food, cleanest, more interesting) San Francisco; Six Flags or Great America ?
Ah thanks for the info. I'm wanting to celebrate my birthday at Six Flags, but I didn't know whether I wanted to go to Magic Mountain or Discovery Kingdom. This video helped me decide that while my boyfriend would probably ultimately prefer Discovery Kingdom, since he's such a huge animal lover, I would ultimately go for Magic Mountain since I'm a huge roller coaster fan.
It would be nice if they could but in a B&M flying or wing coaster and maybe have it go around the park but with a cool layout and theming with maybe animals. A hyper or giga would be awesome but they do have a height limit at that park.
I agree, they really do need to put some big extreme coasters
159ft height limit and no place to put it without getting really creative. They are limited as to where coasters can be due to the animal park. The only coaster not in the old parking lot or off to the side is the really smalle boomerang
V2 is awesome, this used to be the six flags park i went to the most, back when it was still six flags marine world, roar and tony hawk was still there when i went last
V2 is still my favorite at the park!
At sunset and night the line for Joker is only about 20 mins to get on the ride.
Considering Joker used to be Roar, it’s still a pretty awesome coaster.
I've been out there a total of five times over the past 30 years (1992, 1993*, 2002, 2005, and 2007). I was supposed to go on the senior trip for graduated high school in 2003 but I wound up getting sick and had to go home. I live in Reno, Nevada which is about 200 miles east of Vallejo so I can't afford to go out there all the time. My parents and I are planning to go out there in June as my birthday present.
*At this time the park was known as Marine World Africa USA. It became a Six Flags park in 1996 as Six Flags Marine World and in 2006 it started operating under its current name, Six Flags Discovery Kingdom.
I think sfdk is good for marathoning but i do also think the big dirty lake could be used for something cool. It's ok though I still have tons of options from my location. Santa Cruz, great america, magic mountain. All are less than a days drive from my house
I’m watching this the day the Batman was opened, a 4d freespin coaster. You predicted the future
They got the lasso of truth now I have a season pass the ride is so fun I love it u should review it
Great!!! I've been there, what I kind off don't like is that all roller coasters have inversions.....
Exactly, that's another good point I forgot to make. Removing Roar meant no true wooden coaster and the only coasters without inversions are meant for the kids.
Back seat on v2 is the best change my mind
Wow you predicted the free spin right on the nose!
I've been there the same year. I recommend going on Joker right before closing time for a short line.
This is my home park and pretty much grew up in Vallejo. It was a zoo that went bankrupt then was handed over to the city... which couldn’t handle it then tried to add some coasters to become the “new” Marine World that turned into an Epic Fail. Then sold to 6flags to turn it around.... but they can’t get rid of the animals as there will be an uproar by the public and it’s an interesting twist, like a mini sized Sea World. Lastly, it was never imagined to be a theme park or imagined it would ever turn into one so space is very limited that all they can do is expand into the parking lot. They’re trying at least especially with that height limit but I agree with you, the ride selection is MEH. Too bad they cannot take over the fairgrounds across the park that’s barely being used to have expansion. But i think that side is private property and owned by a different company. 😅
I always tell my parents just go to Six Flags Magic Mountain but they always say we’re going to Six Flags discovery Kingdom because it’s more close but this park is still good
Which theme park do you think is the best (generally talking) in California? I'm going to spend some time there and I would like to go to one.
They need a skyride. It can start from that little maintenance area by Medusa and bring it would end at by V2.
Also you were right about their s and s free spin.
0:40 why does the roller coaster look like its dropping in slow mo, but the cars look to be going normal speed in the background?
Discovery Kingdom is getting an S&S freespin called Batman. It's just like Batman: the Ride at Six Flags Fiesta Texas. Do you get what I'm saying?
Where should I go instead Six Flags discovery kingdom or Great America???
I have been to three Six Flags parks: Discovery Kingdom, Magic Mountain, and Great Adventure. Even though I don't think Discovery Kingdom is nearly as good as Magic Mountain or Great Adventure, I still think it is a decent park. I enjoy looking at the animals, riding Medusa and The Joker, and looking at the fascinating roller coaster skyline. After all, Discovery Kingdom is my home park. I understand where you are coming from, though.
Six Flags Discovery Kingdom needs a GCI or a B&M Invert (Batman the ride)
Nicholas Kim but they already do
This is kinda my home park but Great America is so much closer. I guess that not being able to go here as much means I kinda idealize it as better than GA because of the bigger rides but I guess from an unbiased perspective they're on an equal playing field. I may try to go here this summer anyways
I did a writing essay on this in school. It's sad I won't come in a while because I live on the other side of the country.
I love it I live in Vallejo California and its 5min drive or 25 min walk for my house I live right next to the park I been going almost every friday by myself and ride the ride that my little cousin can't ride and we go on Sunday sometimes
Nice park, they should add a coaster using the river in the back of the park
I live in the East Bay Area, and I can say from visiting both parks growing up, SFDK is was superior to Great America. Great America has only added one ride in the past 6 years and it's a pretty good one. They also have a really short season and share parking with the new 49ers stadium, so there are a lot of days where you cannot go because football's on. While I do agree that Magic Mountain is superior and I will do road trips down to SoCal often, Discovery Kingdom isn't really that bad.
The rides at Great America are also really jerky and dated.
the peguins going ham :OOOO 5:21
FRRR
:OOO
I think they should get a b&m hyper, they can just get a permit for a 200 ft hyper, then i believe this may be a second tier sf park.
Ah yes it’s as easy as getting a permit for it even though it’s had a height limit for as long as it has been open
for a roller coaster junkie its an ok park, but for a family its great! the animals are super fun for little kids, and a nice break from roller coasters and rides.
I think this is in the middle of the pack for six flags but I think it would do better with an rmc raptor or something like Maverick but I goes around the entire park
Maria Carmen Teos they really need a gtx
