  • Six Flags Discovery Kingdom in Vallejo, California is an amusement park and zoo combined into one theme park. This park has some great roller coasters and cool animal exhibits, but do the operations hold this park back?

I think its incredible that they fit a lot of their coasters at the front of the park. It looks very compact.

Canobie Coaster its not really that distanced when it comes to the roller coasters in the front of the park. its some on one side, & some on the other.

I remember it when it was Marine World Africa USA in Redwood City. When it moved to Vallejo, we attended and enjoyed it as an animal park. When they began to add rides, I rode a few of the roller coasters, including Boomerang, Vertical Velocity and Roar. I was warned against riding Kong because of its roughness, and I'm afraid of Medusa because of its big first drop. I would like to try the Roar-converted-Joker, though.

I agree that this could certainly use some updates such as better operations and maybe also replace the current restraints on Kong and Boomerang with the ones found on The Riddler's Revenge at Six Flags New England and The Flying Cobras at Carowinds respectively. Never the less, I could still see this being my favorite Six Flags park if I ever visit there. For one thing, the mix of thrill rides with animal encounters makes this park feel a little bit like a Six Flags version of Busch Gardens Tampa and that park is my favorite of all time.

the roar coaster is probably the only reason i can ride the other coasters now. i rode it when i was about 9 before they made it into joker and it really was a really good transition into riding the other ones... they should really make something similar for the people that are scared of medusa and superman and such

This is my home park. I live about 40 miles away. I wholeheartedly agree with you about its operations. They have always been abysmal. I remember I would get season passes every summer and every time I'd go the park would be packed and almost every coaster only had 1 train. Operations definitely need to be fixed.
A drop tower is for sure needed and it's also missing a signature dark ride. And although it has a nice collection of coasters, I think it needs to invest in a standout coaster, especially to compete with California's Great America which is in driving distance. With Great America's opening of the first single rail in Northern California I think it definitely has potential to overtake DK as the thrill capital of Northern California.

I actually had a great day at SFDK. The crowds were low, so the one train ops didn't matter; and the ride operators were all quick and friendly. And then I had the opposite experience at CGA the next day. I feel pretty lucky since I've seen a lot more reviews of Discovery Kingdom in line with what you experienced.

    • @CanobieCoaster
      @CanobieCoaster  Před 4 lety +1

I agree the ops are friendly at SFDK. That has never been an issue. I don't remember this park getting all the negativity when I originally visited in 2014. I really want to see them improve their ops since the park has so much potential.

I had one day here, the Saturday after Halloween last year. It was packed! That meant that multiple trains were running on Joker & Medusa (after Medusa's 5-hour downtime). I did the platinum flash pass, because I knew my day would be packed. I still made time for the animal exhibits and the shows, including both dolphin shows. I really loved how well-rounded the park is, with great rides plus animals, and the surrounding beauty. Harley Quinn never opened, and neither did the kiddie coaster. That parking lot is ridiculously far from the entrance. I wish they could have put the new lot closer to the entrance, or at least run more trams. It also took me 30 minutes just to get parked. The cars were backed up so far.

I just went here and had to leave a comment. I had some similar operation issues as V2 is closed for the season and Joker ran the whole morning but opened at 2:00, ran two cycles, closed because the ride was moving too fast or something, and didn't open again until 90 minutes before closing. I was lucky to get a ride and loved the coaster and the ride was actually running two trains along with Medusa. The park has operation issues and lacks a deep ride lineup, but I enjoy the park for its strong atmosphere, underrated top coasters, good staff, and for me, an overall enjoyable experience.

Now I say this a lot. I am biased towards this park. Espescially now as a ride op at DareDevil, Kong, and Cobra. Now I definitley understand the one train ops issue, but they are definitley getting back into the swing of thing. Now even though I am currently not trained at kong I can say that it sucks that they almost always have one train even if it is an slc. And it seems as if the other rides are getting the operations better. Joker, Medusa, and Kong are the 3 that come into mind as they are always pushing those dispatches.

    • @CanobieCoaster

Great review. I think that Joker is incredible and that Superman and Medusa are also really good but outside of that I’m not a big fan of this park.
I think that a good amount of the animal enclosures could be improved and the operations and ride closures are laughably awful.
To make things even worse I believe they only allow you to ride Joker once with any of the flash passes, though that might differ per day.

Who puts 1 train on a B&M floorless. That is unnecessary B&M floorleses are really long coasters especially ones like medusa. Now we gotta wait like 3 minutes for the train to come back. The only floorless that is fine with operating just 1 train is Batman at Six Flags New England sence that ride is like a floorless VERSION of Batman the ride and is not that long. What's next if they get a raptor I bet they will only run 1 train on the raptor that is always moving. They need two trains on Joker sence that is probably the most popular ride same thing with medusa and kong.

The free spin is OK as well, but other than Wonder Women that is about all I want to ride at this park. Both times I have gone I got there for opening and left by 5 or 6 to go to CGA for night rides on GoldStriker and RailBlazer. I guess I'm lucky both times I have gone Joker ran two trains.
