Why is he part of the uprising and not fighting with his pals on the resistance? In this video, I discuss some of the possibilities.

Regarding the SA2 theory, I think it's more about dimension warping, rather than time traveling. If I recall correctly, the theory states that Shadow, Zavoc, Chaos, and Metal Sonic were all from alternate dimensions, where Sonic was defeated.
So Shadow never would have learned about Maria's true promise
Metal Overlord defeated Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles in their super forms
Chaos would have killed everyone in his final form
Zavoc and the deadly six would still be alive (considering if they actually died in Lost World, it's uncertain)
So Infinite would bring all these villians from the other dimensions in order to create the ultimate team of villians. And it becomes crazy to the point that reality starts getting destroyed itself. It could also be the opportunity to explain all the other inconveniences with time travel. Such as the origins of Silver, Blaze, and Eggman Nega.
Basically this game would have to rely on a ton of lore if this would turn out to be true.
But I also like your theory. I think it would be an interesting subplot if SEGA decided to go for a more simple route.

LennyNoLennie tails and knuckles didn't go super in Heroes technically, they got these sheild things
If this is the case I dont think it would make any sense since if sonic was defeated every time The world would of ended with perfect chaos so Shadow would of never been released, metal sonic wouldnt be able to try his thing in heroes and Zavok would of never heard about sonic anyway.
Edit: Wait I think I misread if u mean all 4 of the villains are from the same dimension where sonic was defeated then my point still stands, but I think you meant each one are from a completely different dimension from each other where sonic was defeated, yeah its possible I suppose but if Chaos went perfect chaos theirs no evidence that he can willingly revert back into chaos 0 on his own.
All the villains would be from their *own* dimensions. So Chaos would have his dimension, then Shadow's, ect.
LennyNoLennie The only thing to support this theory is having 2 of the same characters in a demention just like classic and modern sonic.
Plus, i think it isn't true since it has been confirmed Shadow joined the villains because of his own reasons.

I feel your theory is likely correct since we haven't seen Rouge or Omega communicating with any of the 3 playable characters it still sucks especially for them to be captured but if it drives Shadows reasoning then I'm for it.
I'm down for it from a plot perspective and so long as we hear from them in some way, shape or form.

As for Gemerl, I don't see why not. It's an All Star cast, so anybody's possible.

Idk... he literally died and Eggman only used some parts of Emerl to build Gmerl which might won't have the same function just like how Emerl had.
Emerl can copy everone's moves but not Gmerl. We haven't seen Gmerl did any stuff just like how Emerl did. I do want him to return though but i will doubt he can beat Metal Sonic or any of those villains.
That or Shadow is a double agent for the resistance, but few people knows about it.
It's a good theory. In fact it is the best theory on this I could find. The idea that Shadow is doing this for what could be said his only two true friends Rouge and Omega would be a deep and character developing storyline. Here is the problem. Sega is great at making sonic gameplay (well they are great at making sonic gameplay now) but they are terrible writers. They can write good comedy but they won't think of anything deep and meaningful like that. They will probably go with the whole mind control thing just because it is the easiest to write
Actually, Pontac and Graff aren't good writers. Don't get me started on them. They've been writing for Sonic since Free Riders (or well, Colors for the main series) and because of this, stories in Sonic games have been lacking.
However, the good news is that Pontac and Graff are not writing this game. Graff is only confirmed to be translating while the Japanese team is writing and they're responsible for stories like Unleashed, Riders: Zero Gravity and Sonic and the Black Knight.
So I think that it's possible we could get something more complicated this time around.
Well I just saw the new trailer. Looks like that's not going to happen. Which I think is a missed opportunity
My theory is quite similar to yours, I think. It goes back to Sonic 06. From that game, we remember Mephilles revealing a future where "the world will betray" Shadow. Now, why is it? I'm not quite sure. I do remember that same cutscene on the beach where Omega was like, "I am the one who seals you" to Shadow. What if, that future Mephilles foreshadowed was part of this game? I know it's probably a stretch, but I think it's a nice though. Chances are my theory isn't true due to the ending to Sonic 06. But maybe. It's a thought. I really do like your theory with Rouge and Omega though. I could see that.

I don't plan to go into Chaos particularly since I even went back to rewatch Adventure cutscenes to look for clues on Chaos and well... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I just don't think I have anything concrete enough on Chaos that hasn't been said by several others or enough to carry an entire video.
If I get a good idea, then later. But I don't see a Chaos video in the near future.
However, maybe a discussion on the possible return of the Master Emerald could lead somewhere.

And yeah, while we haven't heard much about Rouge and Omega I feel like they play into why he's there.
He wants to follow in Infinite's footsteps as the higher rank of edge: Edge God.
Infinite has showed Shadow of the form of Edge God, and Shadow was dying to get to that level. So he decided to be his apprentice, and learn how to reach the level.

Assuming Infinite does indeed use the power of the Phantom Ruby from Mania, which could disrupt the Chaos Emeralds power, this would make perfect sense.

Silvers and Mephiles theory
In Sonic 06 , They had a new character Silver. He said he will protect the future no matter what. And then Mephiles told silver that there is a Iblis Trigger in the past that will destroy the world. What mephiles meant is that eggman created robots to own the world like he said in Sonic Generarions.
Mephiles meant that Eggman is owning the world Because of "Sonic". Infinite may have a connection between Mephiles. Mephiles didnt want to destroy the world he wanted to own the world.
Silver in the future looked just like the Choas in the trailers of sonic forces and sonic is in silvers future. So yeah thats it

It's possible that Shadow is operating as a double agent for his own reasons, and fully intends on betraying Infinite later down the line. It's also possible that some aspect to whatever Infinite's plan is ties into Shadows goals somehow.
It's not totally original, but mind control is another possibility. It's odd how we haven't actually seen Shadow or the other villains do anything aside from stand around with the exception of Infinite himself.
It's also worth noting that Eggman likely ties into all the villains reasoning somehow. Especially whatever his relationship with Infinite is. The two of them could be planning something that has a direct impact on the other villains.
I think that I know why shadow chose the bad guy side.. BECAUSE THE GOOD GUY SIDE HAD NO CHOU GARDEN!

But as of right now, there's no feather nor gear to even suggest that he's coming and while I hope he does, Idk.

Shadow wouldn't join infinite even though omega and boob- i mean rouge was kidnaped. Why? Because shadow made a promise to maria to be a protector of humans and him joining infinite means he broke marias promise which is a dick move
You raise a good point.
However, I feel a question of morals comes into play here for Shadow if this were the case. On the one hand, he made this promise and it means the world to him, but at the same time you've got the two people that mean the world to him in danger as well so... it raises a question of what does Shadow do?
Now, as someone said in this comment section, maybe the future Mephiles told Shadow was going to happen regardless of Iblis, Solaris, or Mephiles' presence, this makes sense too as Mephy didn't say WHY or HOW (etc.) humanity betrayed Shadow, Now I agree with this because it kinda makes sense. (Now in a completely biased statement, Mephiles was kinda, in my opinion, besides Silver (and the music), the only good thing to come out of 06, I liked how psychotic he could be, how manipulative he was, how obsessed he was with DARKNESS, (sorry, my inner Kingdom Hearts fan was showing there) etc.)

Lyoko Gem I'm glad I got you on board with this theory a bit more, there's counters to it, most theories do, but hey, at least it made a character that essentially got erased from existence be a bit relevant again. (I mean, I have my own theories if Mephiles truly was destroyed, though I'm gathering up evidence and trying to clear things out on it a bit more)

Here are my 2 personal reasons
1.The Shadow that came back from Sonic Generations is still a villian because he's from Sonic Adventure 2
2.He battled with Infinite before and he saw Infinite's strength was beyond his so he joined Infinite's side
Well remember he might be a unlockable character When you finish the story mode or when u beat shadow so yeah
I have an even better theory regarding Infinite and interdimensional travel. Remember Solaris from Sonic 06, and why it was impossible to beat without the chaos emeralds?
I believe that Infinite exists across all dimensions and timelines. Imagine how powerful that would make him. If he is defeated, takes damage, or makes any kind of mistake whatsoever, he could simply switch to a dimension where he doesn't make that mistake.
You know why I think he's faster than Sonic in the new trailer? You know why I think he could take Shadow, or pretty much any villain for that matter, in a straight up fight? Not only is he obscenely powerful...I think he can use save states.

I feel the reason for Shadow, Chaos, Metal Sonic and Zavoc working with Infinite is because what if they realize how powerful he really is and then come to the decision that it is pointless to resist in which they decide to work along side him.
I could really only see that for Zavok to be entirely honest.
For Metal, it's more "Eh... Eggman's doing it so here we go..."
For Chaos, idk.
But I don't believe Shadow would do this for those reasons.

Thing is...Shadow promised Maria to protect the world, And, I think Shadow values Maria's promise more than anything else, His friends or anything, I think even if Rouge and E-123 Omega were held captive by Infinite, As he'd rather keep his promise to Maria.

As we know shadow "loves" maria more than anything, right? So if im correct, shadow somehow got convince that infinite could safe maria traveling to past if he eliminates the Sonic Forces. This theory is connected with the ruby theory. The ruby theory implies that the ruby from sonic mania traveled to the modern sonic world. Saddly it was traveled to dr.eggman and with the ruby that he found he started to research the rubys power and years later he created infinite. (Remember that this is a theory and I am not saying that this is a fact.)

I would prefer if Shadow just stopped caring about his promise or is doubting Maria's judgement on humanity. It adds a lot more depth to his character. Lets face it, Maria is a naive kid after all, something Shadow may grow to face the facts with. Sega needs to have Shadow constantly conflicted about the human race to make him a great anti-hero. Somebody who cannot decide if he wants to fight for or against humanity. This also rebels against fans who wants to just make him another Sonic. Kinda like what Dragon Ball is doing to Vegeta.
Its easy to tell why Shadow is evil. Because he's Shadow. Shadow the hedgehog.
Perhaps shadow is a double agent, he acts like he's working with infinite, then at the right time, he double crosses infinite for sonic to fight infinite

The reason Shadow is siding with them is because it isn't the real Shadow.Its the Sonic Adventure 2 Shadow.Infinite probably went back in time and asked Shadow and Shadow accepted.Then he did the same thing with the other bad guys....except Eggman.
Think about it guys chaos from Sonic adventure 1 Shadow from adventure 2 Zavoc from lost world and metal Sonic............ well his hasn't gone anywhere

My theory is that infinite lied to shadow saying sonic did something to harm rouge and omega like mephiles did to silver in 06 and we know that shadow doesn't really know too much about sonic so he would believe infinite.

This is a illusion that line in ifintinte theme proves that metal sonic shadow chaos zavok are illusions just found out so that shadow is a fale
If Infinite can enter alternate dimensions (or whatever the game is saying he can do) then it might be possible that Infinite found a alternate dimension where Humanity has turned against Shadow and showed this dimension to the real Shadow. Now him siding with Infinite could go about through this event in a few different ways. For example, since Shadow doesn't know about Infinites abilities he might buy Infinite being able to travel through time and lie about this being his future. (I personally, ain't sure that Shadow would fall for this. I just think Shadow wouldn't be fooled so easily) Or maybe Infinite tells him the truth and just tells him if this event occurred in this dimension is it impossible for it to occur in his own? Like Shadow said in 06 despite the events of that game being erased from the timeline, "If the world chooses to become my enemy, I will fight like I always have!" (of course I don't put a lot of merit in Shadow just doing what he says just cause he showed one possible outcome from another random Dimension) However we may see that Infinite might be a villain who's good with persuasion and says just the right things to sway Shadow into joining him from a possibility. We just don't have enough information about Infinite's personality or how he thinks to find an accurate answer to why Shadow is opposing Sonic. (besides being rivals) :)
