- I like to use thrift store silk clothing to make my shibori ribbon for beading its a great way to upcycle and create something beautiful at the same time you can also purchase shibori ribbon directly from Etsy many dye artists sell beautiful pieces there and it may just be more affordable to purchase it made.
If you enjoy my videos and would like to see more you can support my channel thru purchases at my shop www.etsy.com/shop/turtlesoupbeads
Unfortunately videos not only take many hours of my time but have actual production costs involved I prefer to keep my videos free for all and greatly appreciate all those who support my channel through my shop - thank you
I purchase all the products I use so I can give a honest and unbiased review .
My original designs are free to use in all your personal work for craft fairs and art shows however if you are to copy them for sale or reproduction in videos or on the internet you need my express written permission .

Thanks SO much for this video! I can't wait to try it. There's some great suggestions for dying here too. I do a lot of dye work so I'd like to share some tips, too.
1st is the saying: "Rit rhymes with s---" It fades, it's expensive, and I'd much rather give my money to the people at Dharma Trading Co.
They are knowledgeable people, and they even have a sense of humor. I've called them with questions and been well treated. When they haven't had the answers (b/c I do a lot of experimenting), we've figured out the solutions together. Also, they've donated generous amounts of Silk, Cotton, Felt, Velvet, & Rayon 'remnants' to The Fabric Project for our Northern California Wildfire Survivors. And, no, I don't work for them.
I've dyed all kinds of cellulose and protein based fabrics and, altho there are more choices, for all of them I prefer their Fiber Reactive Procion Dyes. I get nice jewel tones that stay vibrant for years, and the price rivals the inferior Rit dye. They are a powder so it requires mixing, but the advantage is that you have more control over the results. And the color choices are plentiful.
The 2nd is that, especially because you are upcycling silks (which I love you for
Love your add on thank you pleas tell me a safe way to dry don’t own a microwave. Already blue one up on Thanksgiving day one s glass 🍲 with sweet potatoes 🍠
What a mess never again .
Thanks for anyones help .
God bless.
You all are fabulous
The reason the DynaFlo is so much brighter and doesn't sink into the folds is that it is a textile paint, not dye. And the reason the Rit fades is that it is a surface dye coating only the outer layer of the silk fiber. I recommend d you try the Jacquard silk dye (greennlabel) and presoak with white vinegar.
Good to know tfs !
@Genesis of Beauty in general when I dye we soak in what is called a mordant which can be white vinegar, water, iron water etc. Then wrap and add dye. Hope this helps
Any acid dye will dye silk very well. Dharma Trading Co makes a great acid dye that comes in so many colors it makes your head spin. Also if you don't like the smell of vinegar you can use citric acid instead. It's pretty odorless. I find jacquard products to be on the pricey side.
Edit: you can actually also use food coloring with citric acid or vinegar on any protein based (animal) fiber. I know a lot of people that use food coloring or kool aid to dye fabric and yarn. If you are using a glass container you can heat set dye in the microwave, just wrap it in plastic wrap to keep the moisture in.
@@ThePhantazmya thanks I will check them out !
@Genesis of Beauty soak the whole thing in vinegar, wring out then dye.
I loved learning silk and dyes in the shibori. I enjoyed so many details and how so many dyes worked after catched down on the cylinder! I love understanding about dyes that we find! Great !!Thank you
Fascinating!!! I DEFINITELY LOVE the brighter dyes!!!!
This is a great tutorial thx *.* (I've seen a million so i know a good one when i find it and this is a gem)
Ooooo, what a great tutorial! Thank you. I just got into bead embroidery and was looking to buy shibori ribbon and haven't been able to find much. Silly me, I took a class on shibori dying years ago, but didn't connect that the ribbon is made with the same techniques. Duh. AND I still have some acid dyes meant just for silks & wools. Time to get messy. :-)
I have made my first shibori ribbons. Three gorgeous colour schemes. I can’t wait to use them in bracelets and pendants. Thank you so much for this great tutorial!
May I ask where you got your silk?
Good use for old silk shirts! I love it!
Love learning this. I find the RIT dyes more pleasing. Will have to try this to use in my silk ribbon embroidery. Thanks.
these are beautiful. i really liked the one with rit dye
i always appreciate artists who prepare in advance and don't waste my time.
Hi Turtle, I used to do this in the 80's. Yep. I'm so happy seeing someone else do this again and you have inspired me! Don't laugh, I have two silk wedding gowns that will become my test subjects. Thank you.
Wow silk wedding gowns , must have been beautiful ! Mine was bad 80s poly ! Lol
Yes thank you I didn’t even have to go out yes !!!! This is amazing except I don’t understand how to dry it with the heat can’t use a microwave because I blue up my last one on thanksgiving day oh my goodness what a day . And when it blue up I was on the Top of my dryer getting vegetables down from my pantry. 🤪👍
Great tutorial! I will definitely be doing some shibori dyeing and beading. Love this!
I have watched several of your videos. Your work is amazing. Thank you for sharing everything with us. You inspire us.
I'm new to this technique. So beautiful 😍 thank you for detailed video!!!
Another fabulous video, thank you Susan
Beautiful and seems easy enough. tfs
This would make such a beautiful scarf...
I saw the Dyenaflow (Jacquard) 12 bottle set at Joann fabric store today, so if anyone is looking for them they still have them next to the fabric dyes! Hope this helps, people!
Thank you SO much for showing this technique!!!! I have been dying to try to make this ribbon!!! Excellent video!!! 🤗
Good to know ! Thanks

Thank you for the tip on where to get Dyna Flo
Fantastic, it great ad I am definitely going to try this. Tyfs xxx
This is sooo cool, love this idea, never heard about this
Wow! I love this, how fun such beautiful pieces thank you.
I use food colouring. Wiltons Pink, Lemon Yellow and Sky blue are the true primary colours used in CYMK printing. These 3 colours are all you need to make all the colours. I am a fiber artist and dye wool and silk with it. Use a bit of vinegar and heat it in the oven.
Thank you for this tip!!! I imagine you'd need gloves on though to keep your fingers fro getting stained 😁
Really pretty! Loving your videos. Thank you so much for sharing your talent with us!
Love this. Also, the Ritt dye gives a more Earthy tone -vs- the Dyna Flow's jeweled tone. Either way, they are both beautiful and thanks for sharing. :)
OMG! I can’t wait to try this.....
I did not need another hobby....THABK YOU THIS IS BEAUTIFUL

I started watching your clay tutorials because I find them interesting though I have never worked with clay. I admire how very clearly and confidently you narrate these videos. Then I saw this one about making shibori silk, which I have considered doing if I could find out how. A big thank you!
Btw idk if this is expensive or not but have you checked out silk fabric at Dharma trading? I used to buy it from them when I did my own silk nails so a little would go a long way.
Anyway like you, if I can reuse something from a thrift store or whatever it makes me happy too.
Omg! That's so AWESOME! I just happen to have those color Ritz dye. Gotta give this a try for sure, thank you so much. fun with you as always

Cannot wait to try this,
I couldn't find any silk items at resale shops. I ordered from Dharma.com. You can order white silk scarves of all sizes and cater to home dyeing. SO much cheaper that a fabric store too! Thanks for the inspiration. You are a joyous teacher! Thanks for all your sharing!

I have a few silk scarves that I have been wandering what to do with. Thanks for sharing! Love your videos!
Carol Howe Silk scarves work really well but sometimes I have to cut the seam edge off the ends ,it gets kinda of bulky when I try to pleat it
I agree. Amazing🙌
New subbie here. I'm loving your channel! All this is a new art form for me, and something I can incorporate into my other crafts, I'm sure. You're a great teacher! I''ll be binge-watching!

Perfect explanation on Shibori ribbon.
Very fabulous tutorial. The demo was greatly done. Thanks for sharing. I finally understand the way this works.
Thanks !
Thank you! I had no idea pleats could be made this way! Genius! 😁
You might try a small amount of vinegar or citric acid in your soaking water before you use your RIT dyes for brighter colors.
I loved this video you do a wonderful job explaining Thank you

OMG THEY ARE GORGEOUS ....YES i am shouting because I am gobsmacked by your work
Thank you 😊
Thanks for making this video. I should've taken your advice and made my own shibori silk! I ordered a 1/2 yard piece from Etsy and failed to read the whole Description which states: "The strips are joined to form a continuous "ribbon". So your continuance piece MAY or WILL have a seam somewhere in its length. This cannot be avoided." When it showed up it has a six inch white diagonal seam running across it. $11.74 for a product I have to 'work around....with your encouraging videos I'm going to just make it work. Thanks so much for all you do for us. God bless you and your family. - Saving my soup cans now! LOL!
It's so easy to make if you find a out nightgown or blouse you will have a box of shibori ! And a weekend of entertainment making it , happy beading

My mother was a Shibori artist. I've got tons of scrap from her artwork and was wondering what on earth to do with it. Thank you!
I have several tutorials on how to sew it into jewelry and more to come it's really beautiful stuff
Thanks for sharing may God bless you
This is really great would like to try to make some of the shibori ribbon.
Awesome video, thank you
Making this is going to be fun.
Its super addictive ! Always a bit of a suprise with how the colors blend
I found a huge ( extra plus size) 100% silk slip at the thrift store & turned it into a mountain of Shibori ribbon. Liquid Rit Dye and I were already fast friends from years of dying corn husks using it so my library of colors is nice & big. I found the other dye at Amazon and ordered some. I found by diluting it with some water I was able to get it to go into the folds.. but the sweet spot is it was a much lighter hue than on the outer layers. A gorgeous effect! The most important point here though is .. buy old silk slips at thrift stores! I think I paid $3 for the one I got. Peanuts for my mountain of Shibori ribbon. I keep looking at it and thinking.. that would make the most gorgeous Christmas ornaments !
Yes the thrift store is definately the way to go , but you got lucky I usually always find a xs slip but I still get a lot. Yes I was thinking about ornaments too ! If you look up shibori girl on pinterest she has some really beautiful flowers for ideas...
Beautiful 😍! Thanks 🙏
