  • Heavy as Lead is the story of Jason Cohen, who went from 300lbs to just a short 7 years later found himself running the Leadville Trail 100.
Jason, at the age of 27, found himself looking at the number 297 on his bathroom scale. Jason resolved to never let that number touch 300 and has since lost over 120 pounds. His incredible journey has taken him through his battle with obesity and took him to the starting line of the Leadville Trail 100 Race on August 18th, 2018. This film documents Jason's story of losing the weight, becoming an athlete, and running the Leadville 100.
Jason was given the idea to tell his story by his good friend, Mark LeBlanc, who realized that Jason's story needed to be told to the world. Mark is co-creating Heavy as Lead with Jason and is the person behind the camera for much of the film.

Amazing story and incredible job. I myself got up to over 500lbs and lost over 300lbs the last 2.5 years. I’m running my first 50 miler in November and my first 100 in January. Been training hard for the past several months putting in 100 mile weeks. I’m a little nervous for the 100 but your story is super motivating.

It's not only an addiction. Scientist actually found out some people have a gen that makes them feel hungry all the time. Respect the difference. Some people are indeed fat due to just eating a lot and no sports, but sadly some have serious problems, and it's not simply an "addict" problem. They need help from a doctor and medication. They think 1/4 have a medical problem. So respect the difference and don't assume anything.

Lich Lich thank you for this comment. Yes, for some people it is definitely a medical condition. For others, like myself, it is medication I have to take for a medical condition. During clinical trials, doctors knew that this medication I am on could lead to insane weight gain and also cause diabetes, but they did not publish this finding. Unfortunately, this is the only medication that helps me manage my illness, and I gained 103 lbs due to this medication. ☹️ I am now starting the ketogenic diet in attempt to lose the weight. I did initially lose 30 lbs with the keto diet, but using even keto approved sweeteners totally sabotaged my weight loss, and I ended up gaining back almost all the weight I lost. This time it is strict, healthy keto, just meat, eggs, cheese and vegetables, and some liquid stevia in my morning cup of tea. It's the only sweetener that doesn't make me crave more sweets. I will not be eating any keto treats, because the treats almost always trigger a binge for me.

Sorry to step in here but that is just not possible. That would mean you lost 22 lbs per week. Even if you ate no food and burned 60,000 calories per day (by running 300 miles per day), you still wouldn't lost the amount you claimed. They only way to lose that much weight in that short amount of time is by dehydrating your body, which is unsafe and not true weight loss. Please aim for around 2-5 lbs per week at a maximum.

Jason, this is inspiring. I started my weight loss journey over seven years ago at nearly 300 lbs with a daily walk around the block.Today, I have run, walked, and hiked over 3,000 miles and I'm down to 200 lbs, with more to lose. I just came across your video and the Leadville 100 is on my list as I prepare for my first ultra distance race in August. Hope to see you on the trails one day.

Great story and professional content! On my own similar journey and this was super encouraging! At 48 and 270lb decided my 50's had to be the best. At 28 months (and 50 now) down 76lbs (last 15lbs in sight in 4-5 months!) and training for first marathon in January. Glad you started yours earlier in life, but it is never too late. Not sure I'll make the 100 mile efforts, but I am looking forward to 50K and possibly 50 miler before 55! Just thinking about it and sure would be cool to run 100K and run further than my age at least once in my life - you are helping me cast a larger vision ;-)

This had me in tears at the end. Incredible story of an incredible journey. I've lost 106lbs so far and am on my last 20 to lose but got hooked on jogging 11 weeks ago for the first time in my life (I'm 42). This inspired me to keep going like you wouldn't believe. I signed up for my first 10k a couple of weeks ago. This may not be far to some but for a woman who felt she'd be obese her whole life it's one hell of an achievement. On that same journey, not so extreme but still each mountain is a mountain. I cant express how motivating this is. One of my biggest struggles is the need for calories when i knock out some good miles, especially after the race. How did you deal with that? I started thinking I would run to lose weight, now its lose weight to run. Keep on motivating and doing the races which make folks like me stand up and notice.

      Bright observation !
Beans, peas, lentill are really fullfilling food with proteins so it fills hungryness very well.
Much respect to obese people taking to running, seems so much harder and risky than bike ! In France medics are like " no run for knees sake " they are all on hike/bike/swim and running later on. So for me it is super surprising to see such running endeavour to lose weight.
      Go for health !
