Amazing what a man at his lowest can achieve with perseverance...
Hey thanks so much for watching!!!
Awesome video and super inspiring! Can I ask, how do they track times/runners in these?
Hey thanks for watching and the kind words. There are timing mats at aid stations every 13 or so miles and once you cross, the system updates where the runners are. There are a few other timing mats at smaller stations as well. There is no real way to know where your runner is in real time (unless they are sharing GPS information from possibly a watch) so you have to wait around for them to cross every several hours (certainly can be stressful). Cheers!
You mentioned climbing. Is the shake dry actually durable enough for that?
So "climbing" for me is actually the ascent during the race, I've not done any rock climbing with it though. I will say that I have two jackets with this material and both have held up very well. Zero signs of really any wear that I can find... Feel free to let me know if I can answer any other questions!
@@JasonCohenphotoI appreciate the reply. I’m really considering grabbing this jacket. Found one at local retailer in stock. Shake dry has seemed to disappear and evidently appears to be best of the best in Goretex and Goretex like fabrics for the intended application. My primary use would be emergency shell or trail/road running. My only reserve is the durability. Some comments seem to express it being rather fragile. Can’t even wear a pack or vest without rub or tear.
@@ADyess086 Personally I have found it to be the best that I have encountered, although I can't say I have tried everything on the market. I keep mine in my backpack any time I travel because it is so light and packs so small. The other one I have is the Arcteryx variant and I find that I reach for the Sitka first because it is a little roomier fit and also has pockets. I have had zero issues with tear/rub personally. Also, it looks like Sitka has a pretty solid warranty which would give me some additional confidence. Let me know what you decide!
Hey Jason, incredible story, and what's more incredible is that you reply to EVERY COMMENT!!! Thank you for sharing this and create inspiration for the rest of us. I've never been overweighted but I have no doubt you will totally outclass me in a race, kudos. May I ask what type of diet are you pursuing in your day-to-day in general? I'm curious about that, if you are happy to share :)
Hey sorry that it has taken me so long to respond! I appreciate everyone watching and commenting, so responding is the least that I can do! I have been doing plant-based for the last 10 years or so with great success. I say "plant based" rather than vegan as we really focus on whole foods - vegetables, fruits, grain, nuts, & seeds. It has been a very sustainable/great way for me to maintain my weight loss (low calorie with the whole foods) and also has kept me fueled for continuing my athletic pursuits. If you have any other question on the diet (or otherwise), please feel free to keep the conversation going in the comments!
@@JasonCohenphoto Fascinating!! thank you for the response. How do you typically refuel in a long race~?
@@JohnSmith-rr8hp Sure thing. During race days (or just long adventure days) I eat much differently than I do in everyday life. I like to mention this because there are several things I eat during race days that I don't eat outside of race days. I have had people comment on how I eat on race day (surprised) and the reality is that during a long effort I am asking a lot of my body and it calls for a unique strategy to carry me through. I typically eat/take in calories every 30 minutes and do everything that I can to take in as many as possible early on (by the second half of a long effort my stomach isn't super happy with me). This typically means that I take most of my gels in the first half of the run and I alternate between gels/solid foods (typically bars) while my stomach can still handle them well. I think I can do the alternating gels for 8-12 hours, depending on the total length of the effort. By the second half I start to focus a bit more on solid foods like bars, peanut butter & jelly sandwiches, plain potatoes, pretzels, Pringles, ramen, watermelon, bananas, etc. At this point it is really whatever my stomach will tolerate without it souring (it is a balancing act for sure). I also use a hydration mix of Scratch & Tailwind (Naked) and I try to take in about 20 ounces of each every 1-2 hours. This is about 3/4 scoop of each and gives some calories, salt, etc along with my water intake. Other things I take in are: - Mentos/mints which help to keep my stomach in check (I keep a fresh sleeve of mentos to replenish at every aid station). Also, this year at Leadville the runner that I crewed/paced to the finish had never had them and they really helped his stomach settle in the last 25 miles - Clif blocks to add some sugar/calories/salt - Coke to help give some sugar/caffeine and also helps to settle my stomach. Coke can literally bring someone back from the brink. I have used this also in bike events and I can't overstate how important this is later in a race/effort. I may have 2-4 cokes total (typically the small 8oz ones) and it is the only time in the entire year that I have them.
@@JasonCohenphotoWow, thank you for the very detailed reply, much appreciated~!! Let me save this into my notes and try out some of this stuffs in my own effort. Again thank you very much~!
@@JohnSmith-rr8hp Sure thing and if I can help in any way please let me know!

Wow!!! Admirable!!! 👏🏻❤️🙌🏼🎊🎉🎊 I just started my running journey and did 10 miles for the first time this past weekend and I thought it was nuts!!! Imagine 100miles!! 😩😂🤣 I have running goals though.. I want to get to the point where I can do an ultra 💪🏻 one step at a time. I still have lots of weight to lose.
Thanks for watching and congrats on your own journey! 10 miles is an amazing accomplishment! Keep up the great work!
The Leadville 100 has a finishing rate of 50% for men. For women it's closer to 90%.
I know it is definitely higher for the ladies, much respect. I know that in 2018 the finisher rate was 53% overall and I also ran/finished in 2021 when the overall finisher rate was 47%... Big props to anyone who gets on the starting line, and of course those who make it to the finish line!
Youre a freakin beast!
Haha, thanks and thanks for watching!!

Thank you Jason, Thank you for inspiring me. I started running from scratch in December 2020 I ran my first marathon in Paris October 2021 with a 117kg body weight (264 lbs) This year I will start trail running.
Daniel thanks for the kind words. Congrats on your journey, your first marathon (Paris marathon sounds amazing btw), and I think you will love the trails! Keep up the great work!
Yeah dude. Im abit heavier myself. 110-115kg. Driving excavators for 20 years and drinking a few to many beers. 🤣👌🍻 About to give it ago start moving. But I hate running. So i will be walking fast mostly in the begining.
Hey there! I started out hating running and just found something else initially (the bike was really where it all started for me). No matter where you begin, the most important thing is just to take the first step. Best of luck on your journey!
Super inspiring..been running half marathons since 10 years...transformed . not only my life..but family too..Hubby inspired by me..quit drinking alcohol,smoking..runs 42kms..son is a National level swimmer...Daughter is a yogini...Had a bad knee injury..down since a few years...but now gearing up for a full marathon..2024...thanks a lot...Much needed inspiration !!!

Good for you!!! What an inspiration! I’m not a trail runner and just getting back into short races. This race looks amazing! How long did you train for this? Did you do a bunch of marathons along the way as part of your weight loss journey?
Hey thanks for the kind words and for watching. Everything certainly has been a slow build up for me, both in weight loss and in miles. I did the Leadville Heavy Half and Full Marathon prior, but not necessarily in training. Just to get an idea of if I enjoyed the type of race. Thanks again and let me know if you have any other questions

Thank you for sharing. I’m 25 and struggling with the “I’ll always be this way” mentality. I work out most days, I try to eat pretty healthy, but don’t really expect much to change. I need to change my mindset to realize I can do a lot more than I think I can. We got this. You’re incredible.
Hey Samantha thanks for watching! I believe with all of my heart that if you want it badly enough, if you believe in yourself, and if you do the hard work it is certainly possible. You are absolutely right, we got this. You are incredible too and don't stop pushing forward!
Good luck Samantha
The fact that half the people finish the race just shows how determined most of the people are. I thought it would be way less.
Thanks and there is a lot of determination out there. Fortunately I have finished the race twice now and I really am thankful that I was in that 50%. I certainly had my low points each time, but thankfully my mindset was strong and I had an amazing team behind me both times (some fitness as well). Thanks for watching and commenting!
Do you think the running was the weight loss factor or your diet?
The running/racing definitely came later... The diet I would say makes up 90% of the weight loss progress and 10% I can attribute to exercise. I have had stretches where I worked out like a madman while also eating terribly and I had no progress. I would say that the only thing that has really helped to lose (and keep off) the weight was paying attention to what I was eating every day.
@@JasonCohenphoto Could you please explain to me your diet as I am 70lbs overweight?
@@Bot28111 Sure thing. I would say the first 40 or so pounds I lost just by changing what I was eating (previously very little of any nutritional value). This meant trying new foods that I previously would not try. For the last 80lbs (and last 8-9 years) I have been Whole Food Plant Based. Other people would call it vegan and I would say the difference is that we put a focus on Whole Foods (not just packaged items that say "plant based") meaning foods as close to their original form as possible. If I look at my diet now, about 95% of the items that I now eat are things that I would have never touched 12+ years ago. It just goes to show you that we can change our tastes and be malleable about what we like/don't like. For me, whole food plant based has been a great way to keep off the weight because most of the fruits/vegetables that I eat are low in calories which means that I am not consuming a ton of calories daily. I would say that one thing to be aware of is that your volume of food may go up because the calories are lower in fruit/veg. Sometimes people will complain about being hungry so I just like to mention that. Feel free to let me know if you have any other questions!
@@JasonCohenphoto so no meat?
@@Bot28111 that is correct. Didn't start that way, just where I found worked well for me and has sustained me over the long term
Isnt it weird that people have to run 100 mile race to get in a normal good shape while others can eat ice cream at night and be the same shape.
Unfortunately I was one that struck out on the metabolism lottery :)

Dang man. That's gotta be so damaging to your knees. Aren't you worried about laying injuries on your legs that will keep you from running in the future?
Fortunately I have been able to keep up with strength, stretch, rolling, etc which has helped keep my body healthy. I also make sure to listen to my body if I am having any issues. I think many people struggle to listen to their bodies when issues arise which leads to further injuries. Thanks for watching!
