Yeah each Expac unlocks a new area. Sometimes it's a new region, sometimes it's a new continent. Each trailer will becoming out with each FFXIV Fan Fest or that's what they did with Shadowbringers. As for what's happening here... Well our group and the main guy (whose kinda a stand in for the main character) have been summoned to help with a line of succession and for some general exploration and shenanigans but that's as far as we know and as far as I am gonna tease about. . I will say for the next one, focus on our main guy's job/outfit as it's probably going to reviel a new job that will be playable when you get this part of the expansion. Also, let me be the first to Welcome you to Eorzea, fellow adventurer! We're always happy to have new comrades in arms here and please feel free to holler if you have any questions. We're all pretty keen to help new folks (first lesson- we call new folks "sprouts" as you'll see a little sprout next to your name until you get to most recent content) as we've all been there too and if you're on the Aether or Crystal Data Center holler!
It always amuses me to see people explain "sprouts" to people. I remember everyone in my FC being confused way back in ARR when I started calling new players "beansprouts." And now sprouts is the term used by everyone. lol

As someone who's watched your other content/playthroughs from SWTOR and such, I know you do appreciate story and actually invest yourself in them so i'm happy to be able to see you dive into XIV cause it's a wild and lovingly fulfilling story. This trailer was dropped at the start of the Final Fantasy XIV Fan Fest in Las Vegas a few weeks ago, we will probably get a longer teaser at Europe Fan Fest in October and the final full trailer next year during Japan Fan Fest if they keep the pattern from previous fan fests.
i love watching ppl get into the story of FFXIV, i've been playing it for years and it is hands down (at least for me) one of the best main storylines I've ever experienced. (despite all the emotional trauma i got by the end 😂)

Im sure this has been mentioned already but this is the teaser trailer, and they release one thats a little bit longer at each fan festival (us, europe, and japan) with the last one being the full launch trailer, so expect to see more as we get closer to release 🙂 To answer your question, they do not typically add new landmasses in this game, but instead explore new areas of the original 3 continents. This is the first time we're going to a new continent, and its one of two that have been mentioned before, but never seen, which contributes a little to the hype! Theyre also planning a major graphics update for this expansion so that those things you pointed out at the beginning look even better. This is a perfect time to start 😊
We'll probably see the full trailer during the Japan Fanfest, which will be in January next year. In October we'll be getting a second Teaser Trailer with a bit more revealed during the London Fanfest. Dawntrail is expected to release early Summer 2024 (early Winter for us Southern Hemisphere folk), which I reckon will be early to mid June, although I've had friends insist its gonna be July, because apparently in different parts of the world the seasons fall on different months? For me, Winter is June, July and August, but for others its July, August and September.
Was there in the Las Vegas 2023 FanFest and the crowd went wild for this new trailer as we have been teased with the new in game story line they add every few months that our character will be off on a new journey given the main storyline that was propelling the game since 2011 has somewhat been resolved. And it seemed as if our journey had ended, but not really. With this new trailer it hyped alot of us who where at the convention as it shows us a glimpse of what we can expect for the new adventure to come, it has been 12 years of a great story, molded to what it is now, it really sets us off. We hope to see you in Eorzea soon and to see that you will soon join us in the excitement for Dawntrail in 2024!
We've known about Aldenard, Ilsabard and Othard, the three great continents that makes most of the story in FFXIV so far. They make a rather large compact landmass on this world for the most part. We still have to unveil the other 2 great continents (that we know) which are Tural (briefly shown in the trailer) which is located to the west "Fabled New World" and Meracidya to the south.
Basically Dawntrail will be an expansion were the idea is downtime for you and the Scions and just have an adventure. You saved the world 2 times now, you and your friends are entitled to a vacation And yes, the expansions are massive
They usually add a new area that is mentioned in the game in some way. We knew of the New World except we never got to see it on them map (the map just got expanded even more and shown during 1st part of Fanfest). Sometimes the reveal is also in a way that you see a small outline of land when it's strongly clouded. Although we only got info on New World or Tural but some of us are still hoping that Meracydia (let's say... it's an old dragon isle) will come with this expansion as well. Also, in October we're having Fanfest part 2 so... I guess the full trailer will be in October? Hopefully? P.S. Also New World is not only native to Mamool Ja (the lizard people that you saw), Walaqee (humans, there probably other tribe names) but also Hrothgar (Big cat people, think like big feral cats). Since Hrothgar society is very matriarchal we all hope to finally see a female Hrothgar in the flesh (or at least in the full trailer before the expansion comes out).

After how heavy Shadowbringers and Endwalker were - and boy did those get VERY dark and heavy - this is such a refreshing teaser. Any attempt to one up endwalker would have been cartoonish. The idea that this is a palate cleanser that is going to help us reset the power and threat scales bodes well for the longevity of the story going forward.

We have been hearing about the New World (Equivalent to the Americas) since ARR, but it was the far off mythical thing. Our only real exposure was some people from the Northern part trying to stop their lands from being taken for it's Ceruleum(gasoline/oil equivalent that glows a pretty blue, fuels all those war machines you saw in the ARR cinematic). That and some Lizard guys like you saw coming over to our continent to be Mercenaries, not getting work, and then trying to conquer an old city ruin. With those three sentences, you are about as caught up as 90% of the player-base, which is why people are so hyped. It's something completely new that has been teased for a decade.
So, as people mentioned, A Realm Reborn through Endwalker was all part of one big story arc, so the reason this is much more laid-back than the last couple you watched is because it's sort of a "return to normal" (well, relatively normal) as the start of a new, lower-stakes (for now) adventure.
FF14 expansions vary, some unlock regions which would be equivalent of countries/city states, while others might unlock entire landmasses. But most of them are often talked about/name dropped in main or side quests or included in various flavor text of items long before. Things aren't just "THE MISTS REVEAL AN ENTIRE UNKNOWN CONTINENT" like WoW does. For example the New World in the trailer is the Americas equivalent and is casually mentioned in the description of I believe corn or tomatoes items found in release ARR(10+ years ago), establishing the fact that people do know about it and there are existent trade routes if not common knowledge.

It isn't so much that each expansion just thrusts you into a new location never before seen. A lot of the setting is set up long beforehand. Like for this expansion we've known about the New World since 1.0 basically, but there's never been an in-story reason to go there, despite the fact that there's been bustling trade between the New World and Old for decades beforehand (FFXIV is kinda in their late age of exploration - early enlightenment age era, where most of the world is mapped out and new technologies are revolutionizing the world, rather than a medieval fantasy). It's all pretty well thought out, even tho the team does wing a lot of stuff. Also you mentioned in the last one that it looked steampunk, it's more that this world is dungeonpunk because rather than steam the basis for technology is magical in nature, or magitek, as it were. Anyway, as I'm sure others have said, this trailer is supposed to invoke feelings of being on vacation, this is our beach episode after the struggles of the past few expansions. A lighthearted adventure to put us back in the shoes we first set out on rather than that of a hero.
You have reacted to the trailers, but NOT all the cinematics. I'd bet if you went through the cinematics in order you'd learn a great deal and probably fall in love with the story that you've only caught parts of. In the Shadowbringers trailer, when he says , I'll never leave you, Minafilla, and you see her eyes, that was a massive reveal that made every players heart jump and more then a few of us start crying for.. reasons..
Funny that you watched until Endwalker in one go because all that it was one story arc and with Dawntrail starts a whole new story. They are not subtle with the titles, Endwalker being the literal end of the existing plot and Dawntrail being the new dawn.
While the graphics are good, we're all in agreement that this teaser trailer was just the equivalent of the animation of Luffy running up to a cliff and jumping off in one piece like 'YAY A NEW ADVENTURE!' instead of actually showing us anything, right?

IMO Dawntrail is gonna be a beach episode cosplay'd as assassins creed with a plot from One-Piece.

i recommend the free trial. it is up to lvl 60 but will lvl 70 by the time you could reach 60. base game and all of 2 expansions for free 🎉
They technically don't add a new continent. They just reveal a part of the world map and show you what is there. So kinda yes, kinda no.
