Some great tips Andrew. Never saw the tip of putting a cloth on your bench pin when doing the rouge polish to protect the texture and also to be sure to not add tripoli [which might be on the bench pin] to the mop and scratch the piece]. Also like the way you lay the earring post on the cloth on the bench pin to polish it. Thank you, as always, for the great videos.

Such great info. I work on clocks. Clock plates have lots of posts attached. I'll have to try this around the posts on the clock plates. Do you have a video explaining the differed polishing compounds and when to use them? If not, that would be a helpful video too!

Thanks for a great video. I’ll be watching more. One thing I would add. I think you need to wear a decent particulate mask. The tiny particles in polishing compounds, as well as microscopic lint fibers, will end up in your lungs. Be safe folks!

Rio now carries 2” white nylon soft bristle brushes! thank you Andrew
They are not the same as the ones I use. Goto Otto Frei. They now stick the correct ones. 7/8 inch white nylon on a 3/32 spindle

I have watched EVERY ONE of your videos - they are so good for a newbie like me. I'm still stupid about polishes - tripoli rouge Zam white yellow red grey green - what the heck? When do you use which and how do you tell what they are? Can you explain them a bit more?
I'm with you, lost in the various colours.
Hi Karen, polishes are like emery papers, one color is more “agressive “ than the other while polishing. Black for example is very harsh on your metal (gets big scratches out) and because of that you would need it to use it on a brush or a hardened felt wheel. When I remember it correctly than I would use red polishing compound on a stitched cotton wheel. Final stage, use a very fine polishing compound like blue or white for the final polish. Because you don’t need much pressure to make your metal shine i used a wool buff on my machine.
Do NOT use gloves, if you want to protect your fingers wear leather finger hoodies ( gloves can be caught by the wheel and you get your fingers ripped off)You don’t need a polishing machine you can also use a Dremel or a foredom to polish. Tip: Use all mini mops and abraders (from new) with the motor switched to reverse. This sends most of the spatter away from you.
I'm in Ireland and wasn't at all impressed with the local tool/findings supplier so I had look into the English suppliers.
It took a LOT of time cross referencing the different prices and availability of different items.
Cousins UK came out on top, by far, for my needs. Iv'e never had a problem after around 5 yrs buying there.
AKAIK they don't give advice or recommendations so you need to know what you want.
Yes, that's such a problem as it takes so much time and you don't know it it's good enough or should we be buying more expensive item! I wish there was a silversmithing forum where we could exchange valuable, time and money saving information! May e there is one, but I can't find it?I hope you're sorted now and you have all the basic tools.

I was able to find the brushes through Amazon in the US. Came in a 30 pack. Not sure if the spindles are the right size for quick release handpieces but otherwise they look the same.

Found those on Amazon but they have a 3mm shank, not a 2.35mm shank, and the quick change hand piece requires 2.35mm.

For people living in the Benelux: Bijou Moderne also has the nylon thingie. They come without a shaft. You have to put them on a shaft yourself.

How long can I expect the coloured discs to last? I experimented and used them for a few pieces but noticed by the last piece they were actually putting black greasy marks back onto the metal. I hadn't used any compounds on the metals prior (for clarification). Love your videos Andrew :)
Really cool videos :) could someone help me with the correct mixture of the safety pickle and the acid? I don't want to use chemical stuff after soldering to clean up the oxidation.

Hello Andrew, I want to dull down or make matte a shiny nickel plated aluminium handle. What tool do you recommend?
I don't quite know why, I never manage to get a nice polish at my bench, with my flexshaft... It's like the brushes I have (and I have a few different ones) maybe don't pick up the compound properly, I don't know. Also, a lot of my brushes and buffs just spin on their posts whenever I apply a bit of pressure on them.

No. Only use polish on mops that are cloth or bristles

The little nylon "mop" he loves so much: are you supposed to load that thing up with tripoli/rouge or just use it with nothing on it?
You need to use a pre polish such as tripoli
@@Atthebench Does the tripoli stay on the smooth nylon bristles? Seems like it would just fling off and not stay applied to the bristles the way it would to a polishing wheel...
I have just received those nylon brushes in the post from Betts Metal Sales. I took them into the studio just now and they disintegrated almost immediately. . I didn't even get to touch it off the pre polish and every bristle came out. I had them on a normal spin, not too fast. Is there a way to prep these or should I go back to Betts with the issue. Thanks
As far as I know, our white nylon brushes as far superior than other companies.

I found some on ebay and they seem to work fine. I searched RotaryTool White Jewelry Buffing Wheel. I thought they might have been goats hair but the fine print says they are nylon.

With a file, Emery board/paper, or small abrasive wheel
With difficulty. It depends where it is and what kind of tools are available to you.
I had that problem yesterday and used mini sand paper snap on discs (22 mm) and it was perfect for my particular mess up.
The trick is to get it right first time every time. It's so easy to get into a panic and cause more problems when things start to go wrong, usually when the piece is nearly finished.

This is easily achievable using the rotary tools, but now I'm wondering how would one go about it without these tools?
I don't have an ultrasonic device, is it necessary to wash/clean the piece before each step?
hale celik Ideally yes. Otherwise you will be transferring your pre polish onto your final rouge polish. The piece will still be scratched because of the pre polish on the soft woollen mops

It’s not the bearings. The shaft is slightly liked and is rubbing inside the sleeve
