  • Andre 3000 stated in an interview with Complex that "“Rapping is like being a boxer,” André equates. “No matter how great you are or were at a certain time, the older you get, the slower you get-I don’t care who you are." Is the most innovative rapper ever sounding old? Jude and Justin debate.

Basically all the man said is Father Time is undefeated which is true. As far as when one individual succumbs to that and how compared to another whatever man everyone gets their turn eventually and it's not optional. Maybe Black Thought lives a certain way that enables him to maintain what he's doing. Maybe Andre don't feel like doing all that just for YOU. He want to get this money and enjoy being older and more relaxed and I don't blame him one bit.

Calm the fuck down dude. Where in my comment did I say that Dre "MUST" continue rapping. I understand why he doesn't wanna do it anymore. If his heart's not in it he shouldn't keep rapping because it wouldn't be genuine. I agree with him on that. I just thought his comments seemed kind of generalized and blanketed. So all I'm saying is people like Black Thought and Method Man are in their 40's and still killing it. Hip-Hop shouldn't be a strictly young man's sport. You made a huge assumption of how I felt based on a 9 word comment.

This guy is right, as rappers gain success the stop being as hungry, it's not because of age. Pusha T is 43 and can still rap his ass off. Black Thought is fucking 48 and he can still rap his ass off.

I find it funny that people just won't leave Andre alone lol. The man doesn't feel like he should be rapping at 40, let him be. He wants to do other things with his life, not be in the limelight all the time and spend time with his family. He enjoys rapping as a hobby now and I think it's cool. If he wants to only release a verse or feature every 5 year, so be it. But if Outkast releases a project soon that would be cool to. Let the man do what he wants.

The spotlight will eventually fade away with age and ppl won't look at you the same way they did b4. fans constantly want to hear something new shit. everyone likes the new kid whose full energy doing wild shit. its not about getting slower , its that ppl some ppl eventually will lose interest.

Not necessarily. A lot of hip-hop artists eventually run out of steam when they get older and their lack of hunger usually causes them to put out subpar music like Eminem, Prodigy (R.I.P.), Mos Def, DMX, Snoop Dogg, or Jay-Z (at least until 4:44). There are some exceptions like Royce da 5'9, Scarface, Black Thought, and Killer Mike, but hip-hop is mostly a young man's game and the youth (for better or worse) determine which direction hip-hop is going.

Ronnie White I disagree. If you're considered a top 5 hip-hop artist, you should have some solo material to prove that you can do well as a stand alone artist. Big Boi already has 3 solo projects and has proved that he can do well without Andre, but Andre still has yet to put out a solo rap album. Andre is definitely a legend and has great verses on all those Outkast albums, but can he carry an entire hip-hop album on his own? We'll never know until he puts it out.

I see Jude's point that he doesn't want to see 3 Stack's trying to make some money by rapping about some bullshit or collabing with Lil Yachty to remain relevant. To your point though this is art. In my opinion Andre 3000 doesn't want to continue rapping due to personal reasons. Something has changed his mind to the point that he doesn't want anything to due with the music industry or rap game period. It's too bad since his music is the soundtrack to my 7th grade life. You're right Justin. It's not boxing. It's art. In every other art form , especially written form, pen game, poetry and novels, their celebrated. Some of the best works are often at the end.The same reason I listen to what Nas had to say at age 19 is the same reason I'd listen to what Nas has to say at 70, to hear his observations of the world. What it is to be a grandfather, and a black man growing old in America in 2042. or Jean Grae's last rhymes describing an America we haven't seen yet. I want to hear great MCs, talk about what life is like at the end. They don't have to stay stagnate or even tour. If knees, and polyps make it hard to tour, just create. They just have to create and express their vision and observations. David Bowie created his last album released at age 69, transcribing how he was dealing with dying of cancer and showing us the afterlife. I'd love to hear what Rakim would write on his death bed, about his final thoughts on the world, and whats next..A great MC is a great MC no matter the age. You're right Royce and Killer Mike, are only getting better. 3 stacks is burned out. He's given us plenty. I don't an album from him or an Outkast album. I am fine with occasional guest verse. The idea that he feels theirs a time limit to his thoughts is depressing, because he is timeless. You don't have to conform to trends, just create, from the heart. If mumble rap can be an offshoot of hip-hop, their can be a more mature, articulate Hip-Hop looking at the passage of life. As long as your still thinking about the world, and observing, their is no reason your best album can't be your last one. The idea black art shouldn't age and black artists shouldn't create as they age, is a dangerous thing to propagate. Why survive past 25 then? When you dont want to hear what Tupac had to say at 70, your saying its better to be silent or die, then stay alive and share what you've learned. Love your videos, and insights Justin.

Exactly. Hip hop isn’t just for young people, and their viewpoints shouldn’t be the only ones heard in hip hop. I don’t know why hip hop should be considered competitive when it’s really an art form and a culture.

  • @XavierOliver

Stacks didn't say you can't rap anymore, he said you slow down. Slowing down in the sense of growing in a direction opposite of the commerically accepted industry. In Stacks' case, the substance per bar and shear passion that he has given is truly unparalleled and frankly under-appreciated. Offering 5 times the content and delivery than the excepted industry standard and your value to the culture is up for debate? How long can that continue to go on, or rather how long should it? With virtually nothing left to prove or challenge yourself with regarding rapping for the past 10 years or so, when is one able to exit or change lanes. There is still a body of work there of substance to delve into. Just because he's still breathing doesn't mean he owes anything else to hip-hop, regardless of whether or not he has it to give (and he does have it). As mentioned in the discussion, hip-hop is scrutinized far more by it's "fans" than other genres. It's almost like being expected to serve a 5-star meal for a 2-star price and receive no tip, no appreciation. Who wouldn't be exhausted from that over and over?

I think rap is much more comparable to punk rock as far as the live setting goes. Both feed a ton off of energy to make the show entertaining. That level of energy is just tough for some 40+ to do (though I think there are rappers who can definitely do it just as good, or better, than when they were young). They just have to have the hunger, drive, and passion. Killer Mike is the best example IMO.
Rock n' Roll and RnB live shows can get by on the technical abilities that make them entertaining, whether it's a ripping guitar solo, drum solo, or soaring vocal performance.

The Love Below is like TPAB before TPAB. Just take away all the political themes from TPAB, replace it with an overarching theme of love and sex, take away a tiny bit of the small Funk and Trap influences and instead place some more Prince influences then you've got The Love Below.
The way it mixed Hip Hop with Jazz and live instrumentation like that was dope. Not many albums sounded like that at the time. Plus the way Andre stepped out of his comfort zone and went real far left with his use of his voice could definitely be compared to Kendrick. Anyway fuck the TPAB comparison, it's a dope album in its own right. Maybe I only feel so strongly for it because I really like music that scrutinises and explores the emotion of Love but imo The Love Below is a masterpiece and Andre 3000 really meshed into that sound perfectly without sounding like an imposter. Dope album only overlooked because of its timing and because it wasn't the album as a duo fans had wanted for Outkast.

That's interesting to me. Hip Hop head since age 14, 44 now. Seen & heard many of great MC's & rappers that gave me a lifetime of fond memories. De La Soul, A.T.C.Q, Cormega, Wu, Redman, Masta Ace, ...etc...just a few that found their niche to keep pushing. I recall hearing similar words from Q-Tip about having nothing new to write about when Tribe parted ways. Maybe the pressure of not knowing what people may like & one want it to be organic, despite feeling the need to oblige contracts & force the art.
Big Boi still holding me down & he expanded his boundaries but that core still shinning to me. He starts his "Boomiverse" album off w/Big Rube finishing the 1st track. Always dug hearing this man's thoughts, refreshing. Big Boi plus Organize Noize, live musicians, mixture of genres, & the only thing missing from this is atleast an Andre feature. Dre been killing these other features but so called contracts & creative differences keeps them separate, man who knows. Andre kind of reminds me of a Lauren Hill & I could see one major solo album from him reaching similar heights & range.
All I have left to say is, the first three OutKast albums was & still is, classics to me. The rapping, singing, live instruments, scratching, lyrics, & Big Rude spoken words(my all time favorite is hearing insightfulness from this cat perspective, highly regarded.) ...etc...My words can't convey my full thoughts but that Dungeon Family click is my top favorite collective. Always wish Andre & Cee Lo would bring a little more of that fire from their hay day. I fully overstand artistic growth. Thanks for sharing all your talents as an collective force, got damn shit was out the park. If your art ever comes out I'll support(CDs/DVDs/concerts & otherwise). Most artist, rappers included, are most creative when they first come out. This is because they have been struggling, hustling, preparing for this moment. Unless they are truly invested and look for inspiration and motivation they don't get better as time goes on. They may get more technical and learn a few new tricks but the creativity level typically goes down. There are obvious exceptions of this.
What Andre is saying is he doesn't have that motivation and doesn't have any new ideas for creativity. It's a young persons game because they are hustlin trying to be new and different (typically) than the people before them.

He ain't trying to beat younger guys like Kendrick.
I'm tellin u this rap shit need a change...ur going to turn 30 one day ur going to turn 40 one day...lol...music grows like u. Ur fans grow like u...and when someone doesn't know what to do in certain life situations when u got no father, mother, siblings, or friends...it's good to hear someone else take in a song....I think people still look at rap as a gimmick in a way...especially now since these younger guys in it like uzi vert.
I don't see how a older rapper cant make a song about losing his daughter to a dude that aint about shit? And put a funny twist on it at the end so it like the official father love for daughter anthem??? it dont gotta get crazy radio play...but it's real and fathers can relate to it...It can have like some Flashing Lights beat, it doesnt gotta be wacky and goofy like a SNL skit. Open ya mind...this our culture and yall mutha..acting like yall cant get down cuz yall aging lol...yea we went to clubs in our 20s..but people 40+ yrs old go to cabarets...same damn thing..almost lol

So glad I found this channel. You make great content, Justin! I 100% agree with you on Andre. He could do something totally new and fresh. A solo album would be amazing but I guess he just doesn't have the drive. It's sad from our perspective but if he's enjoying a different lifestyle, not much else to say.

If you want to become a rapper at an old age you have to come in as an Orchestrator.... like DIDDY or DJ KHALED or DRAKE...... Hip POP records that are timeless ...

Black Thought disproves this. On the subject of the interview, Andre is starting to get on my nerves. The way he speaks on hiphop like it's kid shit is disrespectful to the culture. The reason why people won't consider it a legitimate form of music is because of people who have a thought process like him

It hurts even more because he's got potential to create and even spearhead the creation of a section of "grown-folk" rap, like Jay-Z's "4:44". Killer Mike goes against what André says because he's bigger than he's ever been with "Run The Jewels". Even 2 Chainz is getting buzz despite going into his 40's.

It ain't just the age, 'Dre. It's the inactivity. In your prime years, you were pretty chiseled as an MC. But then you decided that you outgrew this rap shit, so you stopped working out as much. Now you're back in the rap game, and metaphorically speaking, you got a bit flabby. It happens.
This type of shit isn't exclusive to the rap game. You might start off with a massive vocal range, but then as years go by, some octaves wound up getting shaved off. Ask Mariah Carey. Ask Maxwell, who had to re-key "This Woman's Work" because he lost some of his range, too (and was also inactive for a bit like 'Dre).

And that's with the love below being the only one album I even have any living connection to. I mean of course I still think he's capable of an amazing album if he's up to it. In my opinion the dude is the greatest rapper of all time, but if he thinks he should never release an album, then so be it because the features he's giving us are still amazing and I would never want to see his catalog sullied.

His hunger to dominate the game has morphed into other realms of creativity, so the massive amounts of energy he once dedicated to the booth are now earmarked for elsewhere, and he's more than cool with his legacy!!! A person of his critical acclaim & accomplishments need not chase the dream anymore, because he has lived it!!!

rap is the only genre where as long as you can breathe speak and think you can keep going...rappers dont need to hit the right note and pitch they dont have to play instruments they just need to be able to speak and walk the stage. Rappers should still make music because their fans age with them and our lives change yes you wont make young music but your music will fit your age bracket as long as life is relevant and I think your music will touch the younger people as they grow older. rap is the only genre that can stay consistently parrallel. the other genres basically only sing of love and heartache..hip hop is like having a convo in a barber shop it can be on anything

Tony Schimmoeller thats actually not true..I have more money now than I ever had as a younger me and time is not an issue to find music bc we all find music the same way no matter young or old. We find music through word of mouth or we hear something as we stream music while at work or on satelite radio or if luke me still through regular radio. So those point you speak of is actually not true.

Tony Schimmoeller plus the beauty of growing older is you have more experiences to pull from so you wont have to repeat as much as the younger people who's song topics are limited bc their experiences are limited. Its seem the industry frowns on older rappers bc they are wiser and can actually to the world against the industry if people follow and really listen...look at how lupe fans made the record label release his music..thats power from the voice of the fans and older rapper with support from older fans who now have financial power can change the game and the labels dont want that. Somebody with the respect of 3 stacks could cause problems for record execs..even that lil line from the story of o.j. got people lookin at things differently...thats the power if older hip hop and no other genre of music

The thing is Hip Hop is a young man's game. There's a big drop off of longevity from the # of Hip Hop artist touring/making quality albums in their 40s compared to Rock bands.
I know Hip Hop is younger but most great rapper dies young for some reason.
    Long side story:
Like I went to an Ab-Soul show in ATL and the line was long af and there were an abundance of old heads like 40 50 year olds. Told my cousin damn didn't know Soulo' s fan base was this broad. Security comes out and says "Doug E. Fresh line over here" all the older people went in that line. He was performing in the venue next door. That was the day I really realize that there's not many rap artist that can tour when they get older. But salute to Doug E fresh

I think Dre is being real with himself. He is saying he feels like he's reached his personal peak but I don't think he is saying he can't rap anymore he still does features and kills them. His life has change and he is a creative and he has found other ways to create. Making new albums with a fresh perspective and voice is difficult. What does 2017 Dre have to say in an album format. Let people grow plus naming rappers who peaked late shouldn't really count like Royce in his later work. 4:44 wouldn't be as good if J didn't have anything new to say.
