  • This is my Tesla MC902 CD player from 1987. Basically, it's a rebadged Philips CD460 with the CDM-2/29 mechanism instead of the CDM-4/11 in the 460/560 series.
My unit has been intensively modded to achieve a better sound quality. The changes:
    - PSU caps replaced with high quality Nichicons
    - TDA1541A S1 single-crown DAC chip instead of the plain TDA1541
    - oversampling has been turned off
    - FET based output amp (bypassing the whole factory analog stage)
    - Gold-plated Neutrik RCA sockets on the back
    - dedicated extra stable +5V power supply for the DAC
And the work is still in progress...
Note 1: the perfboards are only temporary. A new PCB housing the DAC, it's own power supply (for all voltages, not only +5V) and the output amps is in development.
Note 2: this video is not intended to show off the player's sonic capabilities, that's why I decided to swap the audio track after a while. The player's full potential can be only heard on good audio system, while listening personally.

Take a look at eBay, sometimes you can stumble across a bargain. Basically anything with a TDA1540 or TDA1541 DA converter will sound good (even the TDA1543 is acceptable). Here's a list of transports and DA converters used in CD players: vasiltech.narod.ru/CD-Player-DAC-Transport.htm

I meant that I would love to have a Tesla. I even got a Phillips CD 824, but it would be great to have a "socialistic CD player" :D

Ah, I see. Well, in that case I wish you good luck, because these players are rare in Czech Republic or Slovakia, and almost unheard of outside of these countries. In case if you wish to have a "real" socialistic CD player, go for the Tesla MC911 - it looks like my 902, but has a metal chassis instead of plastic, and apart from the front panel, the mechanism and the custom Philips chips, all the components are made by Tesla inside it. The PCB is different, too.

+AttilaSVK Ah okay thank you very much. I know it's hard to find them, I've been searching one for about 6 years and I will not give up, until I've got one ^^

If you wish, I can help you with it. There's an MC902 for sale in Bratislava for 55€, but not all the LED display segments are working. If you're interested drop me a line at om5att (at) icloud (dot) com
