For any non-german-speakers thinking about watching Babylon Berlin: watch it in German with subtitles. And you should watch it- it's absolutely fantastic. This trailer- the english dubbing as a whole, really- doesn't do the original show justice. It's a fantastic show and I wouldn't want anyone to miss out because this trailer gave them the impression it's not as well done as it is. The subtitles are not remarkably well translated (in my opinion- I'm a native English speaker with four-ish years of German), but they're still better than the dubbing.

F. Kütarg Subtitles are always better, but not all German dubbing is (or was) terrible. The dubbing in the clip below is excellent. The voices are almost identical to the actual actors in the movie. The syncing isn't bad, either.

Cinematography is great, storyline is awesome(makes house of cards look like general hospital), music, costume,etc. is first class . Babylone berlin is the ONLY german series i have to give up multitasking to read read english subtitles and ENJOYED EVERY MINUTE OF IT! Can't believe i actually binge watch a non english series , watched it twice to make sure i did not misread an important scene due to subtitles and later on searched google for season 3🤓. Babylon Berlin is not meant for viewers with no iq and zero attention span!🤪

Netflix stamps the "A Netflix original series" tagline on every single show they get the rights to stream, even if it's not a Netflix exclusive or they get the streaming rights for only a few countries.
This is particularly evident with "foreign" (non English language) shows, which are often aired in their countries and quite a while after Netflix secures the rights to stream them internationally or to select countries.
They even re-edit some of these shows (such as the excellent Spanish show "La Casa de Papel") when some episodes are longer than 1 hour, which appears to be their max limit.
In other words the "Netflix original series" tagline has completely lost its meaning, since it is employed arbitrarily and occasionally falsely.

Agreed, far, far better in the original German with sub titling. Even my wife, who speaks no German thoroughly enjoyed the two series. The best thing that's been on British TV for years.
It's true, i watched it with a freind who understands no German watsoever, i didn't have to explain much at all.
I watched with subtitles - so superior to dubbing that there is no comparison.

I'm from Scotland, And don't know any languages at all but honestly this is an absolutely fantastic show and must be watched in German with the Subtitles, I only just found out there's a 3rd season so I'm gonna watch it all the way through again.

Just watch it if your curious and you have time. I watched season 1 on a binge, loaded with adderall. So, my impression is probably highly subjective.

They're showing it right now on danish public service tv, it sounds so much better with german language and subs. Sounds ridicilous with english dubbing,I don't know why people think it's a problem watching with subs.
Maybe because in several European countries dubbing is the norm? It's sort of hard for us Scandinavians to grasp I guess, because we only use subtitles.

Have watched the first 3 episodes so far and I don't know what the heck is going on!
Has anyone heard if production has started on season/series 3 of BB? At the starting of the year it was announced that it would commence in October 2018 but l cannot find any current articles or anything else related to it. I've been looking for anything related to it but have had no luck at all. Maybe the time frame was pushed back for some reason?

I am deeply thankful that I live in a country where TV series are not dubbed.

As much as I loved Bruch in season one, it will be interesting to see how well he holds the screen in season two. There were several very good co-stars and supporting actors in the first installment that won't carry over. Peter Kurth was outstanding. I'm sure some interesting new characters will be introduced, but they will have some big shoes to fill in Kurth's wake. I mean no disrespect to Volker Bruch. He did very well in Generation War a few yrs prior to Babylon and I actually started watching BB because he was in it. I hope to see more of LL Fries too but I don't know how she fits into season two. 2 is supposedly going back to Rath's old stomping grounds in Cologne and involves a former girlfriend. Maybe Rath's "sister-in-law" won't tag along. Aside from a couple interesting scenes, I don't think they had much chemistry on screen. It was really disappointing and it actually was a drag that she was introduced in the second half of S1.

If Netflix has exclusive rights to a show or film in a country they put the "Original" Stamp on it.

Btw, my not sure how this thread ending up being a rant about German vs English. There is hardly any mention of the actual show and that's a shame because it is an amazing series. It was really impressive in so many ways. It was refreshing to watch something set in Germany in 1929 that wasn't about Nazis!
As for German audio or English dubbing, I watched the entire series start to finish in English and I was annoyed with the voice overs for about five minutes. After the intro with Dr. Schmidt and Rath, I was totally pulled into the story and very seldom had any complaints about the dubbing. All the main actors, co-stars and reoccurring characters have their own English speaking voice actor. I recognized the same voice actors that dubbed characters making cameos or with trivial roles like waiters, desk clerks or people on the street and it took nothing away from the show.
I watched a good bit of the series a second time in English with English subtitles (my kids were screwing around with the remote and I never bothered to shut them off) and if the German audio has the same subtitles as the English then I'd recommend learning Deutsch or not even bothering to watch BB because they were terrible. They were completely different from the English dubbing and translated loosely using the fewest amount of words as possible. And they didn't even bother to add subtitles to a lot of the dialogue. So, if the German audio has the same subtitles as the English then your going to miss out on a ton of details and it will definitely make the whole experience a lot less interesting.

Yes, the subtitles tend to be a little bit shorter. But it's not like you miss out on anything essential. At least that's my experience from watching English and American shows with subtitles my entire life. Dubbing on the other hand... I can't stand it. But it's a cultural thing I guess. Some countries do it, some don't. So it depends on what you are used to.

Can anyone tell me is the dubbing bad because of the voices or a bad translation of the German? I would like to watch this show with my parents but mom's eyes are bad so she can't really read subtitles. If the dub is just bad because of unsatisfactory voices then I wont mind watching the dub with the parentals.

its an excellent series, can't think of too many better than this show. it's not one of those cheapish shows from hollywood or even some places in europe that don't respect the intellect of viewers, shows that often have simplistic and unsophisticated and all clear characters that are really unrealistic in real life etc. this is a grown up show that will take one back to the era as best as a show can. its not perfect, but its quite good, very good, i think. its an instant classic i think.

That's part of it. Crime/political thriller, with social backdrop. Much more about pretty desperate daily life conditions and warring far left and far right political factions--none of that looks so pretty in the music video.

It is amazing! The main characters, a drug addict and a prostitute, sympathizing with the communists, responsible for a justice in prewar Germany. Now it becomes clear why the Nazis came to power.

By not watching shows or films with subs you are denying yourself some of the best television and cinema in the world,
I don't see the fun in reading captions all the way through a movie, but that's just me. Besides I didn't know you could change it to English audio!
Even then, the English audio is naff, it takes away an authenticity and I think diminishes the actors performances, which in this are excellent. Recently, for whatever reason, so calles foreign Cinema and TV are leagues better than the English equivalent.

It's not typical to Americans though. It's common practice in Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Poland and Russia (the two latter use some form of voice over I think... I once watched Terminator in Russian!)
