HOI4: What's The Point of The Spanish Commune?

- Spain today will be taken over by the POUM, during the fires of the Spanish Civil War the Nationalists will be dealt with thusly. However the unity in the Republican camp will not last and out of the shadows the POUM will emerge to take control of Spain.
Along the way will we be explored the Spanish Commune to the best of our ability, to see what's good about it, what's not and maybe see if there is a reason to play as this obscure anti-stalinist commune.

I'm in Belgium for the weekend, so I made sure to get you another one of those Hoi4 videos you like, there's plently of food in the fridge and there's £20 on the counter if you want pizza or something like that.
The What's the Point series is a fun for me and having one in Spain just adds to that. Between Republican and Nationalists they're probably my most played nation in HOI4.

The strangest thing is that the POUM victory event text references them being anti Trotskyists despite being a Trot being irl
They weren’t Trotskyist the POUM were a revolutionary Marxist party that was unaffiliated to the 3rd or 4th international. They rejected as a party Trotskyism, but also condemned Stalinism and the Soviet Union. The PCE accused them of being Trotskyist because they were unaffiliated to the 3rd international.
@@charliehoran3680 To add a bit more context the POUM was made through the merger of a Trotskyist (left opposition) party and a Bukharinist (right opposition) party contrary to Trotsky's wishes, after which Trotsky heavily criticized the POUM, prompting them to completely break with him. They definitely had partially Trotskyist origins but by the Spanish Civil War they were definitely anti-Trotskyist.

It's a real pain with the portraits. A while ago I palyed Mexico a lot, a very enjoyable nation to play, if you ask me, and I went down various alternate history paths. At first the county leaders all had their custom portraits, e.g. Salvador Abascal. But for some reason at some point none of the custom portraits were available anymore. The only ones still working were Lazaro Cardenas for the d/c/n, Lev Trotzky for c and Plutarco Calles for the secular f.
I played Mexico recently and most of the portraits were working for me. Salvador Abascal's portrait is broken due to a case-sensitivity issue, and Luis Maria Martinez is never actually recruited (!) but I believe all the others have the correct portraits
Same here! Mexico is so uncomfortable to play since all generals and leaders had unique portraits, but now it’s so wierd
No Step back's inclusion of the character system broke a lot of portraits. Mexico sadly has a big victim of this. Another case that comes to mind is Charles Lindburg's portrait showing his advisor stats but has a generic portrait as leader.
Carmel Rosa Baserba's High Command portrait is also a generic portrait, not actually him. The reason none of the POUM generals have portraits is because they were all added after the fact in response to feedback that the POUM didn't have enough officers - only Janos Galicz and [potentially] Mate Zalka. So there used to be even less point to this path than there is now!
The only good thing about the Spanish commune is that you can form iberia and have wargoals against fascist nations and USSR. You cant get rid of the recovering from the civil war, you just reduce its efects 2 times, which îs still better compared to the republicans, whom have to become USSR's puppet to continue down their focus tree. And compared to the anarchists, you have nothing that can delay the govermental crackdown
I don't think you need to even get puppet by USSR. Just dont do expand soviet aid focus

The field marshal doesn't steal the experience from the general, he just gets 25% of the general XP in paralel, not from him. You separated those guys out for nothing and ended up making their stats shittier in the process. You can look this thing up online or just run a test in the amount of time a regular general gets infantry leader and then compare that with him under a field marshal getting infantry leader, you will see it takes the exact same amount of days.
Well now I have completely contradictory information from my comments on trait gain. I think I’ll have to investigate this myself.

Heh, i cut out another idea I had which was giving the right opposition exile and eventually launching a civil war with Spanish support.
The difference was you had to take their land in a peace deal so it wouldn’t be cheap land for Bukharin if Germany invaded, I explained it poorly and it took up several minutes so it was dropped.
I feel its worth to point out that with manpower the anarchists get more because they are locked to volunteer only, not counting doctrine they can only have 9.5% recruitable population. Whereas the POUM can get what ever their law is plus 5% and you can also use that communist army spirt that gives you weekly manpower. Both can core Portugal and while the anarchists can get additional cores it can be quite awkward to do so
One point over the anarchists is that you can join factions, or you make one with your focus. Anarchists can never join factions.
While that doesn’t mean much to the solo player, it does open up more options for co-op games for those who want a non-Stalinist game. They pair well with non-Trotsky Mexico, loyalty to the cause France, SFR Yugoslavia, and/or Right Opposition Soviets.
There's still a bug for this Spain commune where they will get their own POUM flag instead of the generic communist Spain flag (due to the cosmetic tag bug)

Yeah, imo the democtate path even more better than spanish commune path. It might be better if the spanish commune path is like potugal communist path (spreading idology inot middle-south americas).
Would not you benefit in the long run from not doing all the republican focuses when going anarchist? I think a player can still overcome the nationalists, but the civil war will start faster (so you will finish it and spread the revolution faster) and you will get new anarchist troops anyways

If anarchist spain released a nation it would be contradictory unless they just gave the nation the exact same modifiers and focus tree as anarchist spain. (source, the bread book)

I like Stalinist Spain , you become a puppet but by doing appeal for increased autonomy they Will give you indepence , and you get the Five year plan etc , your buffs are great and can do maneuvers in France during Barbarrosa but anti Stalin is pretty shit

You don't have any other real goal. You could go after Germany or italy, but that's boring. I think there should be having focuses to reclaim all of Europe to be monarchist or create a European Union formable called "United Kingdoms of Europe"
