  • Elegoo's Saturn series has now gone 12K. tinyurl.com/5e...
    The new Eleego Saturn 3 12K 3D resin printer has 19 by 24 microns of xy resolution and, rather than make claims of fast printing, seems to concentrate of quality prints from an affordable mid range machine. Here I take a frank look at what Elegoo is giving us in this new printer.

    I love the 2 point system on my original Mars and Saturn - and have had zero issues with it - very rarely have to adjust them.

    I am so glad I decided to buy this 3D printer!
    Print quallity is nothing short of amazing and I don't need the high speed printing since I don't wanna use those ridiculously brittle high speed resins. Having said that, I can honestly say this 3D printer is MUCH faster than my previous 3D printer. While I had to use 2.6 s/layer for TH72 resin on my previous printer, on Saturn 3 I get successful prints at 2 s/layer! And I use 3 mm/s lift and retract speeds. All that combined makes this printer damn fast in my book.
    And I don't really mind the ball joint leveling system. I can see that the 4 point leveling sytem is more reliable, but so far a ball joint leveling system is the only one I've had on my printers and I've never had to re-level my printers. But that's just my experience.

    • @vogman
      @vogman  Před rokem +3

      I genuinely like this one. It's not claiming to be anything fancy - just a simple, honest printer that works well. You made a good choice 😁

      @@vogman I only wished anti aliasing worked with .goo file format but it seems it doesn't work on a Saturn 3.. I hope there's a software update or somethig that'll fix this issue. The workaround is to convert the file from .goo to .ctb format but that's just another needless step to take.

    The one thing I like about the 1 point system over the 4 point, is the 4 point screw heads hold resin and is more difficult to clean vs the one point

    • @ArmedLemmings
      @ArmedLemmings Před rokem +1

      It ships with little rubber plugs for the screw heads. But, I leave it to you to decide if it's worth the hassle.

    Great review as always 👍
    I recently had a Saturn 8K as an upgrade to my Anycubic Mono X2
    I’ve always had Anycubic printers in the past so it was a massive change for me and I have to say I really don’t like the two point levelling system, I do sometimes think I should have waited and gone for the Saturn 3 ultra 12K instead 🙄
    For the time being I’ll just have to live with the two point levelling and try not to think too much about having a smaller knob 😳

  • @RoseKindred
    @RoseKindred Před rokem +9

    I agree. The 2-point system is a little too finicky for my tastes. You can have it tightened correctly but through normal operations, the screws can vibrate out and then you hear a thunk. You know the print failed at that point.

    • @vogman

      Your experience seems to be widely corroborated now after many years using the Elegoo ball-joint system (plus the ball-joint appears to take up more vertical Z-travel distance than the 4-point system). Have you tried, or could you try, to add lock washers onto the two ball hex screws to see if the lock washers will keep the hex screws from loosing up over time (they should do so)? If it solves the loosening problem, that would be a simple fix for everyone.

    • @n.v.4702
      @n.v.4702 Před rokem +3

      For what it's worth: I've only ever had trouble with the ball joint on my Saturn 1 when I didn't tighten the screws properly. They never got loose on their own.

    • @mk1479
      @mk1479 Před rokem +2

      One could put a drop of Loctite (blue) on the threads and screws will not come loose. Don't use the red one, or you'll have to use an oxy-acetylene torch to remove the screws.

  • @TheIcemanModdeler

    Ordered the Saturn 3 Ultra, the 4 point build plate and linear ball screw rails are the best plus a slightly larger build volume.

    I wish you would test print models with large flat surfaces so we can see the layer lines better. High detailed models hide the layer lines and are not ideal.

    Iteration XYZ of one of the current main brands' resin printer.
    They all sort of went together on 2k, 4k, 8k, 9k, 12k. They all go with similar technologies, construction quality and pricing at similar timelines.
    One "invents" something (read: "figures out a cheap way to include a functionality or such of minor added value") and the others copy it on their next device.
    It's tough to get enthusiastic about these devices when they're mostly weak iterations and result in an overall "I've got nothing against it, but there's also nothing special to say about it"-score.
    But perhaps that's a good thing: competition keeps them somewhat inventive, and keeps the price down for the consumer.
    I guess we're just spoiled?
    Thanks for the review!

      I have to agree. Especially the 12k's as they are all using the same screen.

    I mentioned this in a comment to a comment below, but thought I’d ask it again in the main comment stream: has anyone tried adding lock washers to the two ball joint screws to see if it solves the problem of the loosening of the ball-joint screws over time? I should think that would be an easy fix for the problem and should work. Please comment!

    The 2 point screw i had fail only the once but that's once to much for my liking! I had a print going for a couple of hours a new top for a model kit im building the roof of the armoured personnel carrier is large with 4 holes for hatches so was good for suction or so i thought! But it shifted the build plate to a 45° degree angle i couldn't believe what i was looking at when come back in to check on thing's, but this could have been such a costly error if it was still in early stages of printing as was to far up to reach the screen but any lower that build plate could have easily gone through it sitting at this angle as it was still very tight! It must have had some suction force behind it for this to happen+ i got lucky that's for sure! There was no damage to anything not even the pFA! Definitely luck was on my side that day! I have the anycubic m5s arriving tomorrow and the saturn 3 ultra next Monday i could not pick just one of them it driving me crazy so got both haha! I just wanted a second larger saturn 2 8k these came out when i decided so might aswell upgrade to the saturn 3 ultra than get another saturn 2 i thought.

    Does the Ultra's 4 point plate mount onto the regular Saturn 3?
    If so, might be worth just ordering a build plate to save the cost of the Ultra. I have a Mars 2 Pro for years now, and that 2 point system makes me want to bang my head on a wall. I have to re-level my plate between every build, no matter how much I tighten those screws.

      Even their armour is skimpy. Vogland Orc’s generally stare across the battlefield, locking eyes with their foes, and polishing their codpieces with great enthusiasm. This alone is usually enough to disturb the enemy. 😉😁😂🤣😂

    • @vogman
      @vogman  Před rokem +1

      No. Not at all. If you see my S3 Ultra review, I do show photographic evidence of the pesky vertical lines. However, unless the reviewer is using strong magnification, they can be forgiven for not seeing it. Quite honestly the ACF film is the culprit. There are plenty of sources presenting evidence of that now. The printer option makes no difference. When I reviewed the Mars 4 Ultra, I actually replaced the film to improve the finish 😁

    Loved your review of the Saturn 8k that I got on pre order last August... Not that impressed when it failed to print most of the kit I had designed on the Mars.... As the piece of sh1t has a serious problem with arm bending applying 40 Newton's on the build plate and pretty much fookin up anything flush to the build plate with monumental elephants foot or my latest a meticulously modelled signal box top that vertically warps 2/3 rds up the structure. For me the 8k was a POS that saw me remodel over 6 months,if work to get the bastard to print. Oh it's great when it does work... Buying another, well nasty taste in my mouth on that one...
