My Crown Vic was $1500 and only needed a new battery, as long as you kept it hooked up to a battery charger you could get it to start and the Alternator was strong enough to keep it alive for hours. For cheaper you can get beater civics with more problems than I can count on one hand for a couple hundred if you look hard enough. Friend in highschool got a Mitsubishi Mirage 4dr for $300 with 300,000+ miles on the clock. It served him about 35,000 miles before a ball joint snapped, he figured it wasn't worth the trouble and just got another car.

Devon I see it as an affordable aspirational luxury vehicle. If you can’t afford to buy a brand new BMW E38 when they were new. You could purchase a used E38 at a fraction of their original costs. With the trade off paying more in car maintenance. But it’s only advisable to go that route if you’re an enthusiast. Which means you’re either a backyard mechanic, or knows a good reliable independent garage to fix your car affordably.

Just before the lockdown started I picked up a E36 up for $350. Last owner (1st owner lol) surrendered it to a car shop which decided not to spend any time on it and just wanted to get rid of it. Granted it is 318 but it is manual. It does run and drive after installing a new fuel pump ($20). But I have also picked up a inline 6 from a 325i for $200 with most of all the bits and pieces I need (when the 4 cylinder eventually decides to go). Payed $110 for brand new rotors+pads from r1 concepts. Bought a set of used coilovers made by Megan racing for $250. I need a few other maintenance things (oils, filters, maybe some gaskets) and bam I have a good running driving street legal car for under $1200.

I would choose a 2nd Gen Mitsubishi Eclipse. My first car was a ‘96 Eclipse I owned for 10+ years. We paid $2500 in 2004 for it then sold it for $500 years later. Finding a decent running one is getting harder but I’ve seen several for under $1500 in a manual online. “Best” part about it is it shared parts with the Dodge Neon/Eagle Talon of the year, so replacement parts weren’t hard to find.

  • @renmyaru

Mid 90s caprice or roadmaster wagon. These are very undervalued by people, all you have to do to make them fast is to replace the transmission. Only problem with doing that is those is that you cant see how fast you are going past 90 mph. I think last time I checked the average price on them was around 800 for one in good condition; that would leave some left over, possibly for a better gm transmission. These cars are fun to drive, because nobody expects to be passed by a station wagon. Even without doing anything these cars have some get up and go, most of the time I could be at the next light by the time the other lane saw it had turned green. I will say to watch out in the rain, these cars will slide, almost to the point of driving sideways ( if you are punching the gas). Other than that they are just big boats that you can give seven friends a ride in.

The most interesting car I found locally on FB was a rough '01 Jetta with a VR6 for $800. But for the sake of practicality it's either a knocking but clean $1k '04 Expedition, a $1200 '06 Spectra that looks too good to be true, or a rough looking, high mileage, but supposedly good running '96 Taurus. Would have to look them but I think I'd go for the Expedition as it would seem to have the most potential for profit.

I have literally bought 6 of the 8 cars I've owned for $1200 or less. My E46 330I/5 speed was $900. Drove downstate, fixed the wreck damage just enough to drive it back home. Put 50,000 miles on it, her name was Helga. My next car (I still own and drive it) was a low mileage e28 535I/5 speed for $1200. It would have sold in minutes if the guy had posted pictures. 2 cars later, beater 96 318ti/5speed/LSD born the same month as me according to the production date. $1300. Euro-spec, non-running homologated e28 535I for parts, $500. Current bargain is my e30 325I/5speed with 102k miles, which runs like an absolute champ...$2500.
