What Do The Taiwanese Want, As China-Taiwan Ties Worsen? | CNA Correspondent

  • In 1949, Chiang Kai-shek’s nationalist Kuomintang retreated to Taiwan from China after losing the civil war to the Communist Party. It was estimated that more than one million soldiers and their family members followed Chiang to Taiwan. Having uprooted all they had in the mainland, they came to the island as outsiders. To this day, they are known as the mainlanders, or Wai Sheng Ren, which literally means people from outside Taiwan. As cross-strait relations continue to evolve, the once outsiders have made the island their home. While different generations may see cross-strait relations through different lenses, one thing is certain - peace is their common desire.

    My dad is a retired government official in mainland China. He believes Taiwan is a part of people’s republic of China, and believes one day the two parts will reunit again under the communist government’s rule. He doesn’t understand why taiwanese government does not want to rejoin the motherland, and sees taiwanese government and its supporters as traitors of the Chinese race. When I tried to understand his view deeper, I realized his vision is purely because of how he was educated, how government want you to be educated, to think for the best for the government, not to think for the best of its people.

    This interview only projected the extreme end of political spectrum in Taiwan. These pro-China interviewees reside in a neighborhood built for KMT veterans on the outskirt of Kaohsiung. It’s an isolated community as locals avoid moving into the area due to their extreme political view, I don’t think they can be viewed as the universal voice in Taiwan.

The reporter chose "Waishengren" and "Matsu" to interview. But like the reporter said, they're "10%" of the population. I guess the other 90% Taiwanese (non-waishengren) don't matter? I kinda envy Singapore that Lee Kwang Yeo can manage racial integration of the big 3 so well.
    If you guys read the Chinese comments especially before 'little pinky' took over CZcams (about 8yrs ago), The Chinese speaking YT videos Made by Mainlands are full of racist and discriminatory comments coming from Taiwan. They will typically use words like 'Zhi Na' (a typical derogatory word from the Japanese in WWII time) directing towards Chinese. Other words can be you Chinese pig, Ch**k, locust. And expressions such as "Don't you guys feel ashamed of your kind going to Japan for a tour (i.e. being Chinese born). The attack on us Mainlanders back then was so disgusting. This is all under comments on CZcams video talking about food, tourism and living abroad. You will always see two or three Taiwanese trying to direct their narratives into a racial and political direction.
    Additionally Taiwan is a place where they use Taiwanese Nationalism and populism as their ideology. If you express some very welcoming towards Mainland, it's always faced with rhetorics like "you traitor to Taiwan, go back to China". This is a similar form of neo-Nazi.

A real equality is to bring empowerment to the first people, through culture more than anything. We are not equal. People see it as ‘wallowing’ simply because people have not seen changes made yet. Today, only 2% of the population self-identify as Chinese in Taiwan, most of whom are over 80 years old and dying. I am Taiwanese, I am not Chinese. We will build the Republic of Taiwan.

    Let's put things in perspective here, the KMT Chinese that came to Taiwan in 1947-1949 comprise about 15% of Taiwanese total population. The rest are 85% native Taiwanese who are either distant Han immigrants (political dissidents and pirates who went to the island 400 years ago), 16 aboriginal tribes, and people of mixed descent (mixed Han / aborigines / Japanese / Dutch / Spanish you name it). In another words, Taiwan is an immigrant society, like America. Nobody is pure blooded anything in Taiwan (besides recent Chinese arrivals), same as in America. Not sure about the KMT and Communist argument that everyone in Taiwan is of Chinese descent. That's like saying everyone in America of British descent. Americans write and speak English. Does this obligate every American to identify themselves as British and one day unify with the "motherland"?

These nations are essentially different people altogether, with varying culture. While in China things are different as its identity (Han China at least) was solidify after its first unification in Qin dynasty 2k+ yrs ago which had always more or less stay the same for 2 millennium. Your appearance says so, your culture says so. So, what happens in China matters. A divided country is never at peace, so reunification is best. Try interviewing someone whose ancestors have been in Taiwan for several hundred years. You might get a different perspective than from these mainlanders you interviewed. The fact is, throughout history, China viewed Taiwan as a disease ridden wild and dangerous place. China refused to give Taiwan the status of an actual province of China until 1887. A mere 8 years later, China gave Taiwan to Japan who ruled it until the end of WW2. When the Republic of China forces subsequently occupied Taiwan and eventually fled the mainland, they treated the native Taiwanese (both aboriginal and ethnically Chinese) very harshly. Most Taiwanese just want to be left alone and don't want to be taken over by the CCP. Only a very small group of mainlanders and their descendants want Taiwan to be ruled over by China.

    They specifically interview people who are staunch supporters of reunification from these 眷村 (military dependent villages) and regions where KMT (pro-China) party candidates almost always come out on top in elections.
    They did not include any interview of the southern part of Taiwan, for example, where the majority of the population, young or old, support democracy and see themselves as Taiwanese and not Chinese. I can tell you that most of the younger generations living in Taiwan (>40 years old) consider themselves as Taiwanese and NOT Chinese.
    All in all, bad reporting of CNA, which I guess is not exactly shocking considering their political affiliation. Taiwanese here, and this supposed balanced report is utterly biased. First, most Taiwanese people have been urging to refer to refugees who came to Taiwan with the KMT party in exile as "Late Immigrants", along with the "Indigenous", "Early Immigrants", and "New Immigrants" ethnicities. It is the KMT and those who support it that insist on using the term Waishengren, which literally means "people from other provinces" as a mean to insist that Taiwan is a province of China. Also, equating the English word mainlander to Waishengren is plain wrong. The actual word for mainlander is Daluren 大陸人. You can try and address Waishengren using that term and see how much they like it.
    Second, most of these Juancun were Japanese era government properties or private company properties. That's why most of them are houses in the Japanese Showa era style. Since the KMT confiscated all private company properties as well, these juancun housing should be public property owned by the people, not individual properties. They definitely should NOT be sold or transferred to private developers without the money going back to the public. Third, If Mr. Liu wants to live in China, what's stopping him from doing so when his son was working there? Why not move to China and return his house in Juancun to the public?
    Third, Taiwan is an enemy territory separated as a result of WW2. As according to Article 77 of the UN charter, Taiwan should be a trust territory with the Allied powers being the trustee. The primary victor of the Pacific theater is the US, and General MacArthur merely delegated the responsibility of accepting Japanese surrender of Northern Vietnam and Taiwan to the ROC in his General Order No. 1. That in no way gave the sovereignty of Taiwan to China any more than it gave the sovereignty of North Vietnam to China. The main goal of a trust territory is to maintain stability and promote eventual self-determination, which is also stated in the UN charter. Instead, the ROC government immediately annexed Taiwan as a part of its territory, and declaring Taiwan a province of China, against international law.
    The most vocal China lovers are the same group of hardcore KMTers who used to constantly force Taiwanese people to pledge to invade China or get kicked out of school. Now that they can get some cash from China by singing the CCP’s praises, their desire for peace suddenly “remains” strong? Ukrainians are fighting for their hard earned democracy against Russians. If there is a war between Taiwan and China, it would be due to the expansionist ambitions of China, not any provocations from Taiwan. The only people that has threaten to bring war to China are exactly the same people claiming all they care about is peace. The only thing remaining strong in these hardcore KMTers' is their desire to sell out Taiwan’s right to self-determination.

    • @cungcung5042
      @cungcung5042 Před rokem

      General Order No. 1 only has one function : to oversee and to carry out the acceptance of surrender and disarmamaments of Japanese armed forces by the Allied forces. China is one of primary members of Allied Forces and no. 2 on the list in Japanese Instrument of Surrender.
      The matter of sovereignty over Taiwan is affirmed and solved in both Cairo (1943) and Potsdam (1945) Declarations where the Allied is in agreement that territories such as Manchuria, Formosa and Pescadores which are stolen by the Chinese shall be restored to its rightful owner. Then, in Japanese Instrument of Surrender, you can find that Japan undertake to carry out all the provisions of the Potsdam Declaration. This way you can see that from this point, all parties including Allied nations and Japan, agree that Taiwan is under Chinese sovereignty.
      So you see, Taiwan and its people never have right to self-determination. Even if there is one, they never exercise it or fight for it. They have mistaken their current condition of freedom to 'de facto independent' while the truth is they are a 'autonomous province'.

    • @paiwanhan
      @paiwanhan Před rokem

      @@cungcung5042 Cairo and Potsdam declarations are merely guidelines, and actual sovereignty is resolved in the treaties. Before the treaties were signed and went into effect, all territories separated from an enemy state as a result of WW2 is merely temporarily governed by occupying Allied powers. The declarations in no way makes it ok to annex an occupied territory.
      Chiang Kai-shek himself knew this and detailed it as such in his January 12, 1949 letter to Chen Cheng, his appointed Governor of Taiwan:
      Before a Sino-Japan treaty can be signed, the legal status and sovereignty of Taiwan is merely a trust territory to the ROC. How can we openly claim the island as our last stronghold of our anti-communist efforts, and the base for the revival of our race? Such open statement would only be derided as crazy talk from slightly more knowledgeable people both in and outside of China.
      台灣法律地位與主權,在對日和會未成以前,不過為我國一托管地之性質,何能明言做為剿共最後之堡壘與民族復興之根據也,豈不令中外稍有常識者之輕笑其為狂囈乎。
      So Chiang Kai-shek fully knew annexing Taiwan prior to signing the treaty has no basis on International law, and would be a cause of ridicule, but he annexed Taiwan anyway, just asked his subordinates not to make it known outside of China. When CKS himself fled to Taiwan just 11 months later, he basically said everything he told Chen Cheng not to.
