  • Neutral specials are often one of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate's most important types of moves and a huge part of their characters' kits. The Smash world has plenty of tier lists, discussions, etc. discussing their power, but their animations don't always get the attention they deserve. Today, we fix that by exploring every neutral special animation in Smash and ranking them on a tier list!

Thanks for watching everyone! This one ended up being a bit of a beast to try and wrangle in, hopefully the time resulted in something fun. Also just a heads up that even as long as the video is, a lot of stuff still got cut (the one that has come up most often in the comments is the charged version of Blurring Blade). I actually did look at essentially every alternate form in the game and excluded some of them in editing if they didn't change my mind at all. In retrospect this isn't as obvious to viewers as it felt to me and in the future I'll probably be a bit more consistent. Let me know what you thought!

I think the main reason Mii Gunner's Gun isn't as animated as the ones from the space animals is because Mii Gunner has many different costumes with very different gun designs, having to add (different) details to all of those would be so much work i can understand why they didn't. This might also be why Charge Blast spawns the projectile so far away from the gun, its to accommodate for the different designs and lengths of the gun in all costumes, it probably looks better on the costumes with longer guns

For shulk's sword blade vs hand for buster and smash art, my interpretation is that for smash art, he's not powering up the blade itself, just swinging it with more power. Thus higher knockback, and it affects his hands. With buster, he makes the blade itself more deadly, so it does higher damage, but there's nothing different about his swing, so no extra knockback. It's like if you swung a baseball bat. Smash art makes him stronger so he can swing the bat harder, so his hands. Buster art is like attaching spikes to the bat so it does more damage.

    • @jonathanlgill
      @jonathanlgill Před 2 lety +12

It also helps the opponent--Smash is clearly the most threatening Monado Art they have to play around, and having the red glowing on his fists makes it very clear that he's in Smash Art.

Also Buster Art in XC directly affects the Monado too, being an special attack that makes it bigger and does a lot of dmg, so buster "buff" is canonically in the sword itself.
Tbh i would prefer if the Speed glow was in his legs while Jump in his feet so they would be all different, would make more sence too, since running fast is much more associated with leg strenght than feet.

I believe you misinterpreted Wolf's recoil animation, it is in fact there it's just that he keeps the recoil energy into the blaster itself hence the huge swing up. The reason why Fox and Falco's body moves back a little is because they're holding the blaster steady so the recoil energy transfers into their body more just so they can keep their aim. Wolf uses the blaster's recoil to his advantage as he also uses it as an attack with the blade.

Dang, what an incredibly thorough video. Absolutely worth every minute of its run time. Well done!
    Just a couple notes:
    - The charge-up to DK’s punch actually spins faster towards the end. It’s a nice touch in line with moves like Shuriken of Light that accelerate, but this is also how the move looked in, of all things, Subspace Emissary. The way DK swings his arm when he’s about to punch Diddy out of harm’s way is strangely reminiscent of this Ultimate animation in a way I love.
    - Kinda bothered by how much of Rosalina’s face is covered during her charge-up. I wish her body and head tilted backwards or more towards camera, so that we can see her one eye during more of the charge-up than just the very end.
    - In Xenoblade, Monado Enchant (which despite the name, seems to be what Buster is based on) is an effect placed on Shulk and his allies’ weapons, to let them cut through enemies their gear otherwise bounces off of. As a result, I kinda like Buster only lighting up the sword and not the hands, like Smash.
    - Kinda wish Kirby got plush Pikmin in the same vein as the plush Kazooie. Maybe for other moves, too?
    - Like you said about White Kirby with Robin’s copy ability, I think a couple skins kinda make it harder to look at certain animations. As cool as the Dark Link skins are, for example, almost everything is the same shade that it’s easy to look at it all as one blob. It’s also really easy to miss how Toon Link’s bow goes straight into his front foot this way, too.
    - Huge agree on Daisy. Why DIDN’T they give her a Shy Guy or something instead of Toad? Maybe make her look more like she’s sending them forward instead of cowering?
    - Not enough love given to the smooth animation transition from unshaved MockRock to shaved MockRock. Very nice swap from one to the other, and the coffee mug on Frame 3+ really helps hide the missing facial hair. Good sound design on the sip, too.

I thoroughly disagree about corrin's dragon mask, I think how over-the-top it is perfectly suits the dragon abilities and because of that it's one of my favorite kirby hats. @mettatonex7221 Před 2 lety +3

I don't really like the design of the complete dragon transformation of Corrin, I think it has bizarre proportions, its limbs bend it weird ways, and its overall too scraggly to pass off as powerful as it is, plus it's missing a lot of the bits that are used from Corrin's dragon fang moves. I do think the head looks pretty cool, but I also see where Mock is coming from; my main issue is that it doesn't look like the head of a sentient being, more like the helmet that a Power Rangers villain would wear. If they were smitten with the general body type of full-dragon Corrin, I would have gone with a design more along the lines of Arceus or Dialga from Pokemon.
Having said all of this, just from a purely visual and conceptual standpoint, I think Corrin is the coolest Fire Emblem character on the roster; almost all of her attacks involving the dragon fang are incredible looking, and her Omega Yato sword attacks aren't bad either. Personal favorites being her chainsaw-to-piercing stab Forward Smash, her graceful yet powerful wing bash Back Aerial, and her incredibly monstrous Dragon Fang Shot.

And I understand not liking how scrawny the dragon form looks, although for me that’s part of the appeal, it makes it appear almost like a skeleton especially with the detached lower jaw which just adds to the weirdness and creepiness.
Also, Im pretty sure the design is based on a Kirin, which is a mythological creature with elements of both deer and dragons. Which would explain the weird leg angles, they seem to be deer-like, as well as the horns on the mask. It’s a strange design that’s for sure

-The plush/hand puppet Kazooie is actually also seen in Banjo-Tooie, where it's used in multiplayer versions of the minigames; for the FPS-mode ones, it's what characters other than Banjo use in lieu of a live Kazooie to shoot eggs with

Edit 2: Very specific detail but I really like how when villager takes an Item out of their pocket and not a projectile they'll do the same animation from animal crossing, its just very cute
Edit 3: 1:45:56 This is actually an odd detail lifted from the anime but Greninja actually makes the water shurikens in the shape of the shuriken pattern on its legs, not the sacs of water, so basically Greninja's using them as a mold. Either was it's super cool looking

In this case, Lucario favors an orthodox stance. Maybe a further analysis on his attacks can help clarify how well this theory holds up.

I absolutely love how there's a liquid dripping from charizard's mouth during flamethrower

Watching mockrock rapid fire Kirby inhales is one of the best things I've seen on CZcams. Followed by him being done for the night was also hilarious. Good stuff.

I think wolf's problem with his laser is that he stops to 'aim' it but only for like that instant so it really just makes it feel weaker.

One thing I feel like could have been pointed out:
When you discussed Daisy and Peach you didn't acknowledge the facial expression in the move. I know the move doesn't exactly fit daisy but when peach bunkers down she looks shocked and a little worried. When Daisy does it she does it in a much more exaggerated way by closing her eyes and she even keeps smiling I think.
I think this does actually convey her personality a little bit more than you said, but ultimately I think your placement still stands.

I’m a little surprised you didn’t seem to know mii sword’s blurring blade can be charged, but I honestly don’t think that’d change the ranking much, it just feels a little punchier and that’s kinda it

This likely doesn't push Mii Brawler up a tier, but I'm like, 80% sure that Flashing Mach Punch is based off of Zanretsuken, a move used by Ryo Sakazaki, a character from SNK who even managed to be added as a Mii Brawler costume released alongside Terry.

Absolutely LOVE this content. I would love to see something for nair or Dair, if we’re getting REALLY specific, I think down throw would be a lot of fun to cover
