Catching American Guinea Hog Piglets (weaning piglets)

  • Our American Guinea Hog piglets have been free ranging for a few weeks now. It has been really fun watching them explore the homestead. Lately, though, they have been getting into the chicken area and stealing all the chicken food. They have also been using the chickens' water for wallowing. This has had an impact on egg production. The cuteness is over.
I make a corral for the piglets using hog panels so they can't slip out the openings like they do with the cattle panels. The piglets are for sale so this accomplishes a few things...it effectively weans the piglets; it keeps them from pooping in our driveway; it keeps the piglets out of the chicken feed; it makes it easier for prospective buyers to pick out and take home piglets.
But... we have to catch them to get them into the corral...

Take a large tarp and put it on the ground. Have one person at each corner standing by. Put yummy foodscraps in the middle of the tarp. When the piglets come onto tarp for the food all four people lift their corners and now you have them trapped.

Good Luck ! Ya live, ya learn !
But oh my . . . Chickens and pigs. Really bad idea.
My aunt had a full blown, terrifying to see Kan-ip-tion Fit when one of the nephews brought home a 15 lb. porker and put him in her hen haven for "safe keeping". Damn thing broke and ate a half done clutch of her prize hen and rooster's eggs, the big chicken feeder and waterers were emptied, terrified the rest into barren nests for two weeks. Not pretty, and it only took approx. 40 minutes total for him to pillage, plunder and tear up the outdoor enclosure and escape.

Put a rubber washer between the gasket and barrel and then silican around it. That should hold and always set it on blocks in the pig pen.

Why isn't your chicken fence electrified? What keeps out the wild predators?

That's wild that you have to do all that. We fed them in the new pen, they all came in for food including mamma. Then we put food outside and let mamma through to it and shut the gate. I feel lucky. Took us all of 10 seconds to separate them.

American Guinea hogs? Never heard of this breed before, I guess they're a heritage breed, right? Cute li'l piglets, mischievous and invading the chickens, well that was cool the way ya all caught them with those nets! And I agree Clara is one fine and well behaved piglet. Thumbs up and thankin' ya for sharing this informative and FUN video! :)

You may be able to save that barrel by using a plastic bulkhead that has a washer to stop leaks. Might be worth a shot at $4 from Amazon.

Sue Leigh I try to buy local as often as I can. The small mom and pop stores were driven out of business by big box stores, so they were gone before Amazon. If I can buy something for half the price, without spending time or money on gas I have to consider it, otherwise I'm not being a good steward of my money. I appreciate the comment.

You just need a rubber seal or a washer or something like that for that waterer or some hot glue.. It seals..

Classic case of cute gone bad! lol Those little stinkers...was the fence hot? You guys did a great job - loved the fishing net that was the best way. I just love how tame Clara is now & she looks great! I'm not surprised at the chickens running from them...bigger pigs will eat chickens >.< Just so you know, the heat might be affecting the girls laying...my yield is in half & I have a broody one as well.

The piglets are so cute, but their antics probably were stressing the hens. I hope you are keeping Clara. How many piglets are there, and are they all from one litter?

A difficult situation for the farmer/homesteader raising animals to sell or butcher. Can't fall in love with animals that are a resource for the family, although perhaps just this once... Clara is quite cute, if not even precious. I understand the challenge you face.
