Pigs on Pasture: Moving Our American Guinea Hogs

  • A few days ago I began retraining our pigs to electric fence so that I can get them into a rotational grazing system on pasture. The pigs seem to respect the Premier One Pig Quick Fence powered by the Intellishock 120 solar energizer.
    I set up a new paddock for the pigs but now I have to get them from one side of the driveway to the other. It's only about a 50' distance but there is the potential we could have some pigs wonder off course. Watch as we try to get the American Guinea Hogs into their new paddock.

    You have your pigs trained to not push energized fence down, outside wildlife does not know any better however. Thank you for sharing. We do not have pigs yet but are watching to learn. 😃🌈🤙

    Can't wait to see all that. I've been using my goats to clear a spot tangled in thorns, thistle and grass to grow grapes next season

    Yellow jackets can build quite a nest underground. Be careful when you check on it later.

      Yes, indeed! I once got nailed by a colony of ground-dwelling yellow jackets. They are my nemesis!

    Chicken little and Claire are killing me :D :D We are still debating on just raising hogs for food. Just purchasing a full size hog is easier than doing all the work to grow them. But.....love the idea of making sure they are fed the right foods and giving them the extras from our garden. Great job in the pig move!

    I do love you animal migration documentaries, lol. Good luck with that fence! I remember visiting my uncle's farm when I was a kid and how nothing could keep his big sows enclosed.

    There is no grass in that area...I thought they were supposed to graze for most of their food?

    I think you should put some music in the background and little more editing is needed...good thing is, your tone of voice is really warm so with that and little more know how on putting more spice to your videos will definitely do the trick...

    Nice job on the pig move. What is the garden pure attachment on your hose? Would they like a pig pool? Like a goose kiddie pool?

    • @TheGrassfedHomestead
      @TheGrassfedHomestead  Před 7 lety

      the attachment is a chlorine filter. We're on community water so we have to filter out the yuck. They'd love a pool for sure

    Would you mind sharing what you feed your pigs? If it's your own mix what are the proportions and how much per Pig? Do you feed feed your sows differently than your boar or just one mix? Sorry for the truckload of questions, but we recently got some agh/kunekune crosses and I can't find a good recipe to make our own organic mix. Thanks.

    • @TheGrassfedHomestead
      @TheGrassfedHomestead  Před 7 lety +1

      I'm feeding them soaked organic field peas and hay. I tried mixing wheat with the peas but they weren't digesting the wheat well. Barley is good to mix with the peas but i can't get organic barley locally. The peas and hay are serving the pigs well though. If you have access to milk/whey, soak the peas in the milk...excellent mix. I don't have a boar but I would be feeding it the same if I did

  • @Lithilic

    What kind of watering system do you use to make sure they can't knock it over to start a wallow?

    • @TheGrassfedHomestead
      @TheGrassfedHomestead  Před 7 lety +1

      I have a 50 gallon drum with a nipple spigot toward the bottom. The spigot is high enough where the volume of water below the spigot is heavy enough for the pigs not to knock over the barrel

  • @melissagerold152

    So I gotta ask if its OK, can you make a living off your homestead or do you have a job off the farm to help with income? The reason I ask is that I have 5 acres in Indiana and raise sheep,hogs, and chickens and its a losing proposition even with growing my own corn and hay. We do it for knowing where our meat and eggs come from, but we both work full time jobs.

    • @TheGrassfedHomestead
      @TheGrassfedHomestead  Před 7 lety +1

      Ashley has an off-farm job. I think in time it can be done to generate enough income from the homestead but starting out there are a lot of start up costs that require some outside income. Just my opinion

    Are you trying to prevent wallowing? Isn't it a natural form of sun-screen (stress of thermo-regulation, sun burn, skin cancer) for pigs? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wallowing_in_animals Need tree cover to avoid cruelty?

    • @TheGrassfedHomestead
      @TheGrassfedHomestead  Před 7 lety

      No, I just don't want them to use their drinking water for the wallow. Then they get thirsty

    • @clarekrishan1597
      @clarekrishan1597 Před 7 lety

      Fair enough. Pigs naturally live in moister climes, ie under shade canopy of woodland consider the wise words of an earlier host on Justin's tour "the enemy of the pig is heat" czcams.com/video/X8eTQt_RABI/video.html
